Wow I did not expect the game to have basically 0 handholding. Makes sense that it doesn't, though. It went "ok now plant the rice!" then I did, then the UI told me I'm a fucking retard. My only complaint is that it should've been the floating dog that went "Sakuna, this looks like shit" instead of the UI.

How detailed are Sakuna's spats compared to woomies?
>>
>>269010494
Classic. It's A-OK. You're meant to stumble along. Go buy / find Sakumommy's scrolls for some tips at not being a retard for growing rice.

Also, if you're playing this in japanese (as you should), do note that Sakuna actually gives you small general tips when you observe the rice in the field, but it's voiceline only, no subtitles. Make sure you don't miss that.

>>269011543

Starting out as a clueless retard is important to the plot. You're basically supposed to have the leeway to figure out your own system.

Because feeding THAT protein to little children is a big nono. And also gay.
>>
>>
>>269011799
Sakuna's spats are lacking in specular highlights unfortunately. Nylon and other synthetic fibers wouldn't be invented for hundreds of years. Most of human history was spent without tight and shiny fabric, isn't that a horrible thought?

Love this series, love the game, but fuck me, this episode was really annoying, because they're clearly trying to condense the source down to maybe a year or so instead of letting it play out over multiple years like in the game.

They had this other massive field, and all these extra rice seeds and they just never mentioned anything about it to her, because they didn't want to disappoint her if the negotiations fell through?

Okay, then why did they tell her the bad news about their low quality/quantity harvest in the first place? Why not wait until they knew which way the negotiations had landed before saying anything? They had to know she would be upset, yet they went out of their way to upset her, without saying a word about all this extra seed and fields they had?

And suddenly Tauemon has gone from not even being able to shovel shit to being able to plant rice. The interlude tell us he's been training off-screen but... he can't shovel shit... And how long was he training for? By all indications it's only been a few days.

And everybody else knew about these fields and has been preparing/tilling them, but nobody told Sakuna about that? Literally everybody but her knew about this and they've all been working the fields, but not a single one of them was able to help her at all on the field at the house? Yeah?

In the game, you have the entire first harvest that happened before Sakuna learns she won't be able to eat much/any of the rice and the rest is going towards next year's harvest. And Tauemon trains throughout the entire Winter to be slightly helpful. It's not until the next year that you learn about the extra fields and you're able to use everybody to plant, and then it makes sense, here it just feels like everyone's picking on Sakuna for no reason.

>Wow I did not expect the game to have basically 0 handholding.
That's a huge part of what makes it so good, you and Sakuna both know nothing about rice, so you'll just kind'a stumble through it until you learn more, get better skills and get more farming scrolls.

Stick with it, you'll see. It's fantastic at selling that "power fantasy".
>>
>>
>>269010535
>the most turbo autistic rice farming simulator ever made.
What makes it so good is that there's not really any wrong choices, except for adding too much salt or something.

>Sort thoroughly? Sow thinly?
If you want to focus on higher quality, less pest susceptible plants yes. If you want more yield then don't, but you'll have to fight pests and disease more.

>Fertilise before or after you till?
Generally before, but add it after if you want to improve your aesthetics instead

>Shallow or deep water
Shallow for yield, deep for aroma

>Drain?
Sure, but only very briefly if you want to get better aesthetics. Then immediately go for deep water with flowing water.

Should it be cooler? Dryer? More rain? There's some things that are just gimmies like threshing and hulling at night, but for most of it, it's just about how you want to develop your rice and it's fantastic.

Only when you go up to the rice and choose "check", the rest of the time it's just "Rain? I hate rain", "A beautiful day.", "I'm adding water to the field", "I'm letting the water out" etc.

I was expecting a lot more voice hints when I switched back, lol

A little far apart is actually good for your rice

Balanced = higher yield (more rice from harvest and higher HP growth)
A little far apart = less rice but more strength, vitality, gusto, luck, magic

This: >>269014329 is correct, anytime you get a new location you should send Kaimaru out. But it's not as obvious as "If you do it and get nothing there's no dog/cat/etc", because some of it's gated off by progression. You can't get a second dog until you've got the Kappa etc.

My biggest advice is that managing your rice is MUCH more important than managing your fertiliser. Fertiliser will give noticable growths throughout the year, but getting your rice going well is far more important AND will increase the growths your fertiliser gives.

eg. If you'd add say 40 Magic through fertiliser, and you add it first thing in the day so it's absorbed at 100% rate (if you add it in the afternoon or night it's absorbed at a much lesser rate) then that 40 takes a hit from the rice being too hot, being too cold, taking damage from pests, taking damage from weeds, etc. Get the rice right, then worry about the rest. Anyway, a brief tutorial:

>Go to the fertiliser pit
>Add 5x each of the base component (or less if you wanna balance the triangle)
>Add enough Amber to fill the trinangle about 3/4 full. DO NOT overfill it, and don't underfill it either
>Add the rest of the components after that
>The next fertiliser you make the triangle will still be fine, so you can ignore the base components completely, just use the normal components

And one final one

>The fertiliser you add before tilling the field doesn't have to worry about pesticides or anything else, since there's no pests or rice to be damaged, so you can just add 300x Rotten Food without issue. You don't need to cleanse it or anything, just throw it in and till that field, it's a fully absorbed boost without penalty. That's a lot of free stat gains until you start making rice that doesn't pre-fertilise

Actually I guess one more

>It's fine to add salt and use Spring Water to balance the toxicity out. BUT! Even if you do, it incurs still Salt Damage if you add too much. So just add 1-2
>>
Rice cultivation is really hard...
>>
>>
>>269014897
>tauemon is an unfixable shitter though
It really do be like that.

And it's funny in the game because he's one of the few that stays with Sakuna, but all he ever does is act as her advisor, which she doesn't need in the least anymore. He doesn't even seem to have developed any Godly powers except to be more of a useless glutton.

And speaking of being a useless glutton, remember how he supported Kaimaru and Myrthe in forcing Sakuna to keep the Demon Rabbit? And remember how he guilted Sakuna into promising to spare Ishimaru "If we can just sit down, share a meal and talk..."? How'd those work out for him? Two times the game pulls the "No, let's not kill them, we can all be friends" thing against Sakuna's better judgement and both times blow up in her face

I like the guy, but he is deadweight.

I'm curious if I would've done something insane had I not already seen various Sakuna webms. Maybe I would've remembered the rice fields I'd seen in other anime. Not like I knew anything other than "fairly close together and usually in a straight line."
Thankfully most of the advice is going over my head at this point, I'm not sure if I'd want it or not. I'd probably rather just try figuring most of it out myself.
>>
>>269010494
>then the UI told me I'm a fucking retard
There's a few times it'll seem like that, but it's actually not

>Your rice was "A little far apart"
That's fine, most of the highest quality rice is like that.
>You got "barren offshoots"
That's fine, that's just what that stage is called.

It's not criticising you, it's just determining how the rice is gonna grow. You'll get a smaller yield but better quality, which means less rice to eat but better boosts. And considering there's only 3 "days" of winter, you only need like 4-6 rice to for a full year, it's almost always better to go for Quality.

Only time you'll want to do Quantity is one time after the big turning point of the game, you'll understand why, when you should make brown rice. You'll use it to trade with, since it trades 1:1 instead of 3:1 so it makes the calculations simpler. You can only hold 999 Rice anyway, so quantity doesn't make sense when each harvest is getting you like 300-400 rice a year.
>>
>>269015923
Me neither Sakuna. Me neither...
>>
>>269015019
>I still cant fathom to imagine how people saw a literal grass and said "Yep, I can make food with these."
Generations of trial and error (with a couple deaths) can go a long way.
>>
>>269015849
Just remember that fertiliser lasts for 10 hours, so when the rice is growing you want to maximise those 10 hours. But then also remember that fertiliser isn't a big deal.

Also:

>Powder
Can be used in a meal for a temporary buff, useless. Throw it in the fertiliser for permanent gains instead.
>Flakes
Can be used in a meal for a permanent buff. Do this. You can use it in the fertiliser, but using it in the meals is a guaranteed Stat up and since you can get the Stats through fertiliser in other ways, it's potentially a waste to use Flakes.

Also: The Immunity stat alters the rice's susceptibility to diseases, the Herbicide stat alters the rice's defenses against weeds, the Pesticide stat alters the rice's defenses against pests, and the Toxicity stat alters the toxicity of the soil. So if you give rice fertiliser that gives them a Positive bonus to Immunity, Herbicide or Pesticide (not just negating the negatives of your fertiliser, but positive) then you'll see less or no damage from diseases or weeds through the 10hours that the fertiliser is active.

You won't be able to get the Eradicating Remedy (Pesticide buff) for a while, but you can get the other ones. Sakuna's mother has scrolls about all this.
>>
>>269015688
Characters also tend to prioritize different items when you send them out too
It's either luck, but from my save Kaimaru is more likely to bring back fertilizers/remedies
Kinta is more likely to bring back ores
Myrthe is more likely to bring back food items(stat powders/medicinal bases)
Yui's more likely to bring back items for clothing
and Tauemon seems to be the most average one

or you could send all 5 to a location to maximize gathering a single item, usually the remedies and medicinal bases

Yeah, it's a real shame how this adaptation seems to be condensing the timeframe, but I can understand it because in the game something like 30 years will pass before the end. It's explained, kind'a, why nobody gets any older or grows, but it's definitely a bit of a handwave.

In the game Sakuna goes the entire first harvest before realising they won't have enough rice to eat, which is when she storms out in Winter, so the Winter black night the blizzard is what almost kills her. The fields come a lot later, and there's no free rice from the Ashigumo, it's the rice that she harvested from the first year that everyone plants in the field for the second year.

Yeah, Yui mentions this when you talk to her. She makes fun of how Kinta only looks for ores, but that she's no better since she only gets dyes or such. Mythe gets medicines, and Kaimaru gets... manure... Tauemon is the only responsible one who brings back some of everything.

When you're hungry enough you'll eat anything. Random weeds and roots, anything that isn't poisonous is fair game. When all you've got is weeds and stuff gathered from nature, it usually doesn't taste good eaten raw so you try to make it better with various preparation methods. Wouldn't take long for them to realize what parts of the plant were good to eat, but figuring out optimal cooking probably took a while, likely not until after they'd started cultivating it. You need an abundance of a crop to really experiment with it, when it's a people's main diet.

You'll get scrolls and advice from Tauemon as time goes on to help you better grow your rice, so I would highly recommend not looking anything up your first playthrough.

Why does the Anime hate Myrthe so much?

>Episode 1 she does nothing
>Episode 2 she's a retard who wants to go explore around where Demons are, oblivious to danger
>Episode 3 she burns a full thing of Venison because Kaimaru starts crying

Every anime original scene for Myrthe is "She's a retard" when, in the game, she was one of the most competent members of the crew.

Once you get the hand of the flow, it's pretty fun. You'd only need to tend to the field a couple of times during Spring and before Winter. Making and spreading fertilizers are pretty easy. The combat is decent, but the controls, especially using the hagoromo can be a bit finicky since it travels in a fixed 8 direction. But throwing/slamming/pushing mobs towards each other feels super satisfying.

The funniest part about it for me was that you're meant to (and I say this without the game giving you any indication this is the case) fight him in Winter after clearing up the harvest/threshing/etc.

But I'd made some Aesthetic rice beforehand so I harvested it on Summer 3, and had it all threshed and hulled on August 1, to fight him on August 2.

Which meant that afterwards, Sakuna was sitting at the Dragon's Tunnel sulking from August 2 -> Winter 3. She was sulking for FIVE MONTHS.

Cute.

There were two rice domestication events in history, one in China and one in Africa. The nature of the events suggest they were one-time Adam and Eve type situations done intentionally rather than by chance. It did take a while to spread, as sinica rice didn't reach India or Japan for many thousands of years afterwards, but it was just as revolutionary to both and everywhere else as it was to China once it did.

Rice, wheat, barley, oats, are all grasses. Even corn is a grass, a very tall one and the seeds didn't look much different from any random grass seed before humans selected the shit out of it through thousands of years.

Brazil have lots of Japanese descendants in agriculture but they seems to be in more lucrative areas. I think rice and other grains are made in large scale mechanized farming in Brazil instead of many small paddies. The videos of humans planting had a guy tossing pre germinated seeds around and let them grow directly instead of the careful process Japanese do. I guess it is the difference of trying to grow the best quality rice vs maximizing rice production per work force.

It will if the water is too high and gets the flowers/grains wet. Funnily enough, a lot of people think rice HAS to grow in a patty, but the patty is more of a pest deterrent to keep various insects, birds, and mammals away. You can grow rice just like wheat if you wanted to. It's just more efficient to grow it in 6 inches of water.

Cassava have many varieties with different levels of toxicity, usually people eat the roots of the less toxic ones but there is a dish made from the leaves of the very toxic one. Needs long cooking hours to make it safe. Likely something developed during famine times.

It is good to stop most weeds from growing as well as most plants are not adapted to growing on water. Sagittaria is a genus of plants that are weeds in rice fields but their resilience and adaptability to aquatic environments make it a good aquarium plant. It looks like grass underwater but grow arrow head shaped leaves when the plant manage to grow past the water level or grow entirely above water. This plant also have CAM photosynthesis meaning it can absorb and store CO2 at night to use it during day so it avoids competition for CO2 underwater. People used to think this mechanism was exclusive to dry climate plants like cacti and succulents (to reduce water loss during day) but now it seems like it evolved in aquatic plants first and those adapted to dry climates later. At least such hardy plant have an edible tuber.

Only recently I found about the plant when doing a sidequest on FFXIV helping some rice farmers and I realized the weed was not some made up plant but was actually a real plant and the same one used in aquariums so I looked it up and found out it is a weed in rice fields and also edible.

That's because most PA works shows are Abe propaganda shows made to convince nips to work hard in a real job and make babies. Sakuna is all about rice farming (a real job) and her design makes you want to increase the birthrate. The other two shows are yuri bait, which makes Abe roll in his grave.

Yeah, it's shameless at this point. I mean, even in their previous yuribait Aquatope there were named male characters who interacted with the girls and pregnant girls/single moms, and in their previous fujobait Buddy Daddies the blond guy had an ex-wife and banged hot whores on the regular. The message was still conveyed.
Mayopan and Nanare dropped any pretense whatsoever and went full yurikek pandering. The former at least works as a comedy, but the latter is really soulless and devoid of anything that makes a PA original worth watching.

Apart from that, most things that boost general rice quality boost stickiness by the same amount. The scroll on "Heartiness" details the general strategy for that.

One of the biggest mistakes the Italians made during the entire Desert Campaign was to provide their troops with a diet which was composed, in large part, of spaghetti and macaroni. Aside from providing insufficient protein (this wasn't Buitoni Brand), pasta has one serious drawback in the desert: you need water to cook it! Therefor, each Italian battalion, when it receives it Stores, must receive and additional 1 Point of Water when Stores are distributed. Any battalion-sized uni that does not receive their Pasta Point (one Water point) may not voluntarily exceed their CPA that Turn. Furthermore, Italian battalions not receiving their Pasta Point that have a Cohesion Level of -10 or worse immediately become Disorganized, as if they had reached -26. As soon as such units get their Pasta Point, they regain their original Cohesion Level (i.e., the level they had before they disintegrated).

It still takes till like level 12 or so until you see the full potential of a skill and if it was worth leveling or not. Like Rising Carp is pretty ass until you get at least 3 or 4 projectiles, and the dash doesn't seem that incredible until you unlock the two follow ups and realize they are free.
I feel like all skills should have gotten a small chunk of exp every harvest so you're not stuck debating if it's worth grinding something you still have at level 1 out or not when you already have 4 maxed out skills.

At least it doesn't require cloud access to turn on.
>>
Haven't watched any of the episodes. Did they make the higanbana dumplings? I think it was hand rotten dumplings or something.

I don't think so, I think she just fought a random enemy deer. But maybe, it would make sense, and would lead to the Forrest next

>I beat the story in 8 years.
You beat the entire game in 8 Harvests? Including the shit harvest after the Volcano? That has to be some Speedrunning gimmick because that's nutso.

That guy is a hell of a lot better at the game than me, I didn't do any of those crash mechanics on that boss, goddamn

The fact that he can't even shovel shit was definitely great

Pretty sure I did it in 6. Everything from the mountain fortress onward was very frustrating because I could barely do any damage and I'd die in a couple hits, but I got stubborn.

Tekusari, higanbana or red spider lilies.
They're just poisonous, but you can apparently eat them when ground and mixed in water sufficiently.

It's 6 of one and half a dozen of the other.

She throws a fit because she's been working hard for literally a full year at that point and she feels like she's been lied to, but she does return normally when she sees they were looking for her. But conversely she didn't make as much of a fuss about shovelling shit, she didn't want to do it, but had to so she does.

But it doesn't have the moments like the kids talking about being enslaved and being hungry all the time, with her saying "Follow me and I'll make sure you're never hungry again." There's been some really nice anime-original scenes for her.

She should unironically have quietly taken it out and put it down.

Don't need to do it infront of the kids or make a fuss, but even Tama agreed they were being ridiculous.

they never really say how long it takes. Seems it can even change based on the person.

the metal children are technically children of a god but age very fast while Sakuna doesn't age in the same time.

Rising Carp still fucks them up hard, and -as always- Iado destroys them if there's anything else on screen to throw into them.

That's legitimately one of the weaknesses of the game. It's hard to judge what skills are good when they start out at shit level, and swapping one you're used to out to one you don't even know about doesn't feel good
>>
>>269040071
Yeah, see: >>269015068

They're squishing the timeline since they don't wanna explain how the kids don't age in the 20yrs it takes you to beat the game I guess.
>>
>>269040993
Although, unironically, I did feel sorry for Kinta where 10years after the game starts, Sakuna is still saying he can't have Sake and Tauemon is saying "We'll drink together when you're older."

The game time is spread in 4 season across a year.
Each season is only 3 days long, meaning a full "year" is just 12 days and you could easily spend "decades" in the game without any growth on the kids.

It's mostly just handwaved, but the idea is that by living among the Gods and by eating food created by Sakuna -a Goddess- the humans are becoming Gods too.

Kinta becomes able to create incredible weapons/tools unthinkable by mortals, Yui can do the same with her loom, Mythe becomes able to create medicines and cure diseases that shouldn't be possible, Tauemon is there too, Kaimaru can talk to and connect to the heart of any living creature animal or even demon.

It's exactly what happned with Sakuna's mother, since she came from the Lowly Realm too but her whole house and this whole mountain actually arrived in the Lofty Realm thanks to her raimant.
>>
>>269041190
I should say "becomes able to" since this happens a way into the game, and is part of why everyone else starts being able to understand Kaimaru rather than just Yui.
