Alright, it is Saturday and I am gonna post the seventeenth volume of Inuyasha. Feel free to react or comment on any panel, though I appreciate if image replies are not used during the dump. Feel free to discuss anything Inuyasha related after the dump.Previous thread: >>273328130Despite the OP image, I am using the VizBig 3-in-1 localization which does not feature this cover exactly. Be aware that some of the larger images have been edited to be lower quality due to image size limits.
Here's the inner illustration for Volume 17 in the 3-in-1. Spooky.
Original title is 闘鬼神. The title is left untranslated as it is a proper noun. According to Furinkan, the kanji read ""fierce fighting god"." Machine translation also suggested "demon fighting god" or "god fighting demon".March 8th, 2000. Author's note:"Q: Sensei, what's the wildest partying that you've ever done?A: I spent as much as ten people when I was on a trip to Mexico about a decade ago."
>>273418620He whf.
>>273418634Jaken is deeeead!
>>273418821Gotta wonder a bit about the mechanics of all this. Anyway, I've posted both these notes before but Inuyasha is a long series and Furinkan posted them again so here:"When asked what sort of demon Jaken is supposed to be Rumiko Takahashi responded, "The visual image of Jaken was a "hell demon" (jigoku no gaki/地獄の餓). I also had him wear a kariginu (狩衣, the style of robes and hat Jaken wears) to give him a feeling of middle management."A "gaki" (餓鬼) is a typically translated as a "hungry ghost", a creature that lives off of the earwax, dead skin and hair of humans. People who lived awful lives are reincarnated as gaki as punishment. The creatures that Sesshomaru drives away using the Tenseiga are also likely inspired by gaki as are the binding creatures seen early in the series."
>>273418853Is this our first shojo face from Jaken? I feel like it is. This is a tremendous day.
>>273418879Aw, Shippo and Kirara snuggle.
>>273418902I like this interaction.
>>273418917Lots of cool effects here.
>>273418985No need to keep it a mystery.
>>273419015I guess the kanji Furinkan translated as 'fierce' and the one that Google translated as 'demon' was 鬼 or 'oni. Hence, ogre here. And yup, the chapter is named after the newly christened sword.
>>273419062We can leave that bit a mystery.
>>273419086Stunning display of confidence despite his previously stated fear, but I guess this isn't quite a Naraku-level threat in his mind.
>>273419116You know that one poster who is mean to the boomerang bone? I don't think I ever realized how much it jobs until they pointed it out. I guess Miroku's wind tunnel not working is much easier to notice. But that's battle shonen for you. You can't have the bread and butter stuff always win. And you usually have to wait for the main guy to finish the job.
>>273419157It is still cool.
>>273419176Funny emphasis here. I guess the VIZ hasn't settled on a name for Miroku's shakujo?
>>273419270Furinkan has a note since VIZ had to do some localization:"When Miroku smashes Kaijinbo's skull he says "judgement" (as in the divine/religious sort). In Japanese this is "seibai" (成敗)."I think Judgement would've worked, but that might be the weeaboo in me.
>>273419344I wonder if Rumiko realizes how many fights Miroku handles without the wind tunnel. Admittedly, it makes sense that Kagome would only pay attention to the flashier moves since it is so chaotic in battle. And this wasn't just beating chumps to death with a staff.
>>273419381End of chapter! Here's another note by Furinkan. It is pretty self-explanatory:"Also, Furinkan has another note. It is self-explanatory:"Most evil laughter in manga is "kukuku" (くくく). Kaijinbo's is "gugugu" (ぐぐぐ). It is likely this is just to give it some sense of contrast to Naraku's "kukuku"." "
Original title is 蘇る鉄砕牙. It seems it means more 'Revived Tessaiga' or 'Resurrected Tessaiga'. March 15th, 2000. Author's note:"Q: Sensei, what made you all buy your first issue of Shonen Sunday?A: I really liked Osomatsu-kun and Obake no Q-Taro." I've seen her talk about Obake no Q-Taro before in an autobiographical manga. Osomatsu-kun is of course, incredibly beloved.
>>273419494
>>273419509You think the blade got taunts baked into it?
>>273419531Inuyasha, come on.
>>273419546Hehehehe. Ah, I love them.
>>273419596Ah well. Just a dull blade then.
>>273419648Swirly.
>>273419669Try it at home.
>>273419691
>>273419738
>>273419747Stayed intact though. The tessaiga, I mean.
>>273419778
>>273419788
>>273419803Both limited by their bodies.
>>273419821Should've got there sooner.
>>273419839You think his human ears shrink or meld? Or like fade away?
>>273419872?!
>>273419896End of chapter. What did you dooo?
Original title is 闘鬼神の使い手 which appears to mean Tokijin's User. This makes sense in context though.Furinkan mentions on the anime page that "Totosai mentions that Kaijnbo once created a sword by murdering ten children. The skills that he wears around his neck are obviously the skulls of children. In many legends, oni are said to eat children." Sure. I mean, makes sense.March 22nd, 2000. Author's note:"Q: Please tell me what you remember about your graduation ceremony?A: I've already forgotten."
>>273420035
>>273420260'Bridge' rather than 'binding agent' this time. Hm. Wonder if that was a distinction made in Japanese.
>>273420304Furinkan has a note about the sword:"Tokijin is not a katana (刀), a curved sword with a cutting edge on one side. Instead it is a type of sword called a "tsurugi" (剣). These are swords that were primarily made in the 10th century before being replaced by the katana. One of the most famous swords in Japanese history, Kusanagi no Tsurugi (草薙の剣), is a tsurugi-style blade."
>>273420325He did it.
>>273420350
>>273420415There he goes.
>>273420431
>>273420447Takes a lot of pride in his work.
>>273420465And this is for Inuyasha.
>>273420489Get some reps in.
>>273420507The dragon attacks. Though really, it is more of covering fire.
>>273420538This would be an ENTER, I guess but we saw him earlier.
>>273420549Scared.
>>273420610Man, imagine Sessh's aura getting added to the mix.
>>273420641Of course, that's not how it would go.
>>273420650End of chapter. Also, hah, Totosai is just over Sesshomaru and his crap.
March 29th, 2000. Author's note:"Q: What item would you most like to collect?A: I'm currently satisfied with what I have, so there's nothing really."
>>273420678
>>273420693Gets a brief moment to catch his breath, but that's all.
>>273420714Bit routine by now.
>>273420736
>>273420797Totosai can't be as aloof as he sometimes is here.
>>273420808Sesshomaru continues his scientific research.
>>273420821
>>273420838
>>273420849I wonder if that was 'baka'. That seems pretty childish for a duel like this but it is Inuyasha.
>>273420867
>>273420878Wow, Shippo.
>>273420950
>>273420990Baka again?
>>273421004
>>273421039!
>>273421052Not like they agreed on a duel.
>>273421065End of chapter. Jaken, professional sycophant.
April 5th, 2000. Author's note:"Q: What celebrity would you like to have for a brother or sister?A: Someone like Tsuyoshi Doumoto would be a good brother. (Or son actually)."
>>273421126Not just a sword smith.
>>273421140When is "feh" the proper response?
Thanks
>>273421166Oh yeah, we got that bit of info last volume. >>273421171Hi! Another person in this thread! No problem.
>>273421227Makes you wonder a bit about the years before he found the sword.
>>273421275That honestly was my first thought.
>>273421315
>>273421338
>>273421348Hehe. Very subtle, guys. Also, leave it to Rumiko to end this sort of spiel with a gag.
>>273421383He came back though.
>>273421400Red light. That game is called "Daruma-san ga koronda" in Japanese. They use 'tomare' or "stop!" rather than red light though.
>>273421438Missed her?
>>273421452Presumably the same ""bunshin" (分身) can mean "other self" or "alter ego" or simply "another part of oneself". It is also used in Buddhism to refer to various incarnations of Buddha." term used last volume.
>>273421674Just a thought.
>>273421904Doesn't like her assigned role.
>>273421989Heh. Kids.
>>273422009No reason to stop now.
>>273422027End of chapter! Didn't expect that, did you?
Original title is 四匹め which is basically this, but much like the other title 'The Third Demon', it is using that animal-ordering word as far as I can tell.Usually covers like this was for anniversaries or something, but that doesn't seem to be the case here. April 12th, 2000. Author's note:"Q: Please tell us your favorite fairytale and the reason.A: Gura and Gura. The spongecake in it sounds delicious."
>>273422116Man, this is the worst. >>273421126I forgot to include Furinkan's note regarding this author's comment.Furinkan's Note: "Born in 1979, Doumoto is an actor. He played the role of Hajime Kindaichi in the Kindaichi Case Files drama."
>>273422144It is still going.
>>273422172I assume this was also turned into a sphere by the anime. Or maybe they didn't have the decapitation scene at all. It is pretty gruesome after all.
>>273422213For those holding out hope that this was the end of Naraku, it wasn't. Sorry.
>>273422230Koga and his friends. Have I said I love his friends? Packmates, I guess. But still, I think of them as his friends.
>>273422272Catch everyone up to speed.
>>273422287In 2021, Rumiko referred to Kagome and Kikyo's smell as "Clean sheets dried in the sun or flowers."
>>273422337He's here.
>>273422356Like he never left, naturally.
>>273422371Heh, Shippo. Also, mustn't have been too far given the other two made it relatively quickly after.
>>273422386Clear shot of his tail here. Also, another absolutely teeny Kirara.
>>273422439
>>273422451Off he goes.
>>273422492Heh. I'm sure this was a bit more ambiguous in Japanese, but honestly, I could see him hearing what he fears he's hearing.
>>273422517It seems Rumiko drew a waning crescent rather than a waxing crescent, unless it is about to be new moon again.
>>273422576I love skeletal mounts. Anyway, found 'im. I mean, it is almost certainly a golem. But still.
>>273422602End of chapter! ?!
>>273422617I have a feeling Koga is about to job again.
Original title was 獣郎丸. As a proper noun, it was not translated. The kanji in this mean 'beast boy' according to Furinkan. I got beast from my machine translators, but they struggled with the later two kanji, suggesting 'perfection' and 'vassals'. It could be a suffix used in names, perhaps? Also, Furinkan mentions that:"This issue of Shonen Sunday has the first announcement of the Inuyasha series receiving an anime adaptation later in the fall. Takahashi's quote in the article states: "I'm excited that the series will be made into an anime. I'm looking forward to the brightness and speed of the action that is unique to anime. Also, not to be outdone by the anime, I'll do my best to make the manga version of Inuyasha interesting."" About 17 volumes in. April 19th, 2000. Author's note:"Q: When you were a kid, what sort of things would you lose yourself in when you were playing?A: Drawing."
>>273422742
>>273422872
>>273422889Furinkan has a note about this outfit on the anime episode notes:"Juromaru is dressed very formally. He wears a kimono (きもの) with a haori (羽織) over it. The white pom pom style fluff ball is a haori himo (羽織紐) and is used for fastening the haori."
>>273422907
>>273422927
>>273418634I didn't mention it last volume, but Sesshoumaru's smug is gone for good. He's forever a salty sword otaku.
>>273422940
>>273418853kek, I was wondering about how being bisected would work.
Thanks anon!
>>273418985It would have sucked to clean this page.
>>273421065I wonder how Sesshomaru must feel, seeing two of his late father’s retainers working for Inuyasha instead of him.
>>273422969Classic writing trick. Have someone who is really good at a thing so you can make someone else seem absurdly good at the thing. I guess this is by definition jobbing, but Koga's still up.>>273423017No problem.>>273422961Well, we got a bit of smug here: >>273420650
>>273423113
>>273423136Oh hey, Miroku keeping pace with Inuyasha and Kirara again. >>273423087I actually have a quote from Takahashi that discusses that. I was going to wait to post it until it was relevant, but I guess I can post a chunk of it here:"[Inuyasha's father] seems to be very critical of Sesshomaru, but I thought he was thinking, "He's the older brother, he's a real demon, and he should be strong on his own.""
>>273423197Unfortunately, too late for one of those things.
>>273419872>>273419896With the dawn of a new day, his sword has grown to great lengths, throbbing with energy.
>>273423214Preoccupied.
>>273423265As before, swings at whatever is there.
>>273423276So, there ya go. Does that count for this: >>273422717
>>273423292No need to die.
>>273423305Of course, it isn't like Inuyasha could run away with everyone on his back.
>>273423318Less surprising here.
>>273423332End of chapter. Ew.
Original title is 解かれた封印 which seems to mean 'Broken Seal' or 'The Seal that was Broken'.April 26th, 2000. Author's note:"Q: Sensei, if you had a national holiday, what would it be and when would it take place?A: A day where I wouldn't have to work for the entire holiday."
>>273423442VIZ, that's so cheesy. I doubt the Japanese did this, but I don't know.
>>273423458Still gross.
>>273423471Good question.
>>273423499Blork.
>>273421904>>273421674And to flirt I guess.
>>273423515
>>273423526Tried and true.
>>273422116Getting kind of formulaic.
>>273423551I feel like this sort of ambiguity is easier to pull off in manga. We aren't really supposed to know what the heck he is doing here.
>>273423582Hm. >>273423556Weekly manga. I will say that Inuyasha has its ups and downs. Comedy doesn't tend to get as stale for me as action and drama. I do think it has amazing moments throughout, but I can't say that all of it is perfect.
>>273422492>>273422517She practically asked him to touch her.
>>273423651Their faces.

hi op, thx for the storytime
>>273423916Being nice to girls AND handsome goes a long way.
>>273423755I assume all instances of 'you bastard' is 'kisama'. I wonder how good a rule of thumb that is.
>>273424229I might check out the anime episode to see how they handled this. Maybe they did motion blur everything.>>273424112No problem.
>>273424248
>>273424313All the way through. He could look a bit more perturbed about it.
>>273424335Ugh.
>>273424358End of chapter. I'll be honest, I completely forgot about Juromaru until this reread, but I remembered this creepy little thing immediately.
Original title was 影郎丸. Another proper name so it is untranslated. It is the same name as Juromaru but with 影 or 'shadow'. Also, I looked at Furinkan's page and they did mentioned 'maru' as a suffix. Here's the full note: "The "ro" part is "sons" while "maru" is a common male name suffix."May 10th, 2000. Author's note:"Q: What do you do to make sure you stay healthy?A: My handmade onion dressing helps blood circulation."
>>273424436At least he didn't say 'darn it' like some manga localizations.
>>273424500Yeah, they clarify what the name means. And I assume shield-spell was 'seal' before.
>>273424516Time to intervene.
>>273424544I honestly expected saimyosho. This is better and makes more sense.
>>273424559
>>273424572>>273424559Sango...I...
>>273424572I do appreciate that he doesn't just give up on using it. And of course, I appreciate his intervention here.
>>273424663Unfortunately, it isn't an 'I win' button against two very fast opponents working as a team.
>>273424687
>>273419344Nice Exorcism.
>>273424702I feel like it should change SOMETHING.
>>273424725Uh oh, not Shippo!
>>273424741I know you guys love to rag on Koga but this is kind of cool, honestly.
>>273424756Not the time.
>>273424773I appreciate that that's the end of that conversation and Inuyasha isn't so stubborn as to not acknowledge the rescue there. I will say, this whole page runs on manga time since the two super fast bad guys that Shippo and Kagome couldn't even see are just chilling.
>>273424809
>>273424831He really is so weird.
>>273424848
>>273419176M-Masaka... Hiraikotsu failed? But how...
>>273424863End of chapter. We got ourselves a classic tag team scenario.
Original title is 二対二 which apparently basically means the same, though it gets translated as 'Two-To-Two' which made me laugh.May 17th, 2000. Author's note:"Q: If you were a genius scientist, what would you invent?A: Medicine."
>>273418821So... it happened AGAIN!
You know, I think it was a miss on Rumiko’s part to have Naraku’s incarnations be so different from each other but without a common single thread among them.>wind manipulator woman >void little girl >mind reading ogre>fast drooling retard + fast mantis thing >baby (which later splits into baby and kid)>origami yes-man
>>273424725We've established everything below Inuyasha's neck is free real estate.
>>273425101The notoriously talkative Juromaru. >>273425155She talked about that (sort of) in a manga extra later on. She basically ascribes it to experimentation.
>>273421140Imagine if it turned out so heavy that she can't even throw it anymore
>>273425275The sword continues to be a fashion statement. And I should say that she ascribes it to Naraku's experimentation in universe.
>>273425297Kthud. >>273425287God, imagine if it needed a binding agent and we'd get us gap-toothed Sango for the rest of the series.
>>273425318Beats the alternative here.
>>273425334That's pretty fast.
>>273425374So is the haori decorated with patterns of a ball of yarn or? I can't really tell what that is.Also, apparently, the anime removed his drool and fangs and replaced it with mist. Man, those fangs and the drool were the most unique elements of his design.
>>273422907This one was cool if I remember right. Creepy stuff.
>>273425433I guess he didn't do this in the anime if they removed his fangs.
>>273425479Just don't do it.
>>273425490Faster.
>>273425506
>>273424384>>273424516Oh right, it was this thing

>>273425591
>>273425613
>>273425627In the spirit of not just Inuyasha getting messed up, Koga gets a scratch on his best features.
>>273425650End of chapter, end of volume. Yup, another mid-battle cliffhanger. Feel free to use the thread to discuss anything Inuyasha related. I normally would bump it with some extras, but I don't actually have any this time. It is the first volume of a wideban and the second volume of the 3-in-1 and none of its chapter's got a front cover. So, I may bump it with some fanart if I can find any relevant ones, but that's all I can promise. We'll see if it lasts 24 hours. I will be returning Wednesday to dump Volume 18.
>>273422907>>273418512I now remember this guy... and I still don't remember what was his thing

It hasn't been that long since I last read Inuyasha, but to be perfectly honest I don't really remember anything that happens in the middle portion of the series. It all kind of blends together.
>>273428515I only remember the six mercenaries or something, that was kind of cool. The rest is just a blur of endless filler and new Naraku spawns.

>>273418512>>273425790I remember this guy being a disappointment compared to Goshinki. Just a monster of the week villain with no bearing on the overall plot. Probably the least memorable Naruaku incarnation.
>>273422009For someone with no kids of her own, Rumiko sure has a good understanding of how children think and act.
>>273422009Rin is fucking adorable.
>>273433666One of the only volumes of this series I owned as a kid had these losers so I always remember them. Even in a series with some pretty weak monster of the week villains they really suck.
