...so what was the moral of the story?

Aggressively unimpressive. Character development and chemistry was incredibly lacking and was mostly relegated to montages instead of actual writing that requires them to have an on-screen chemistry and characterization. Music was incredibly overbearing and overly-sentimental for characters with very little tangible development. We barely even know anything about these characters by the end of the story. Why does Kyomoto draw? Why is she a recluse? How does Fujino’s drawing aspire her so much? (They had a comedy bit about this when they met but it’s not expound upon any further other than that one moment), Why does Fujino have the drive to outdo Kyomoto? Out of sense of competitiveness or spite? Does Fujino only use Kyomoto so she could ride her fame via their collaboration?
Does Fujino berates Kyomoto from going to university in order to prevent her from becoming better? It would make sense considering how harshly she treats Kyomoto when she professes wanting to go to the university and the scenes after it shows that despite achieving success, none of the people she worked with are as synergistic as her with Kyomoto. It feels like the movie is trying to make Fujino a selfish person but at same time they are too afraid to do so, worrying she will be hated by the audience. The lack of character interaction and drama cannot be understated. Somehow the socially recluse Kyomoto has no problem socializing with, in her view, the prestigiously genius Fujino. No further depiction of her struggling with social interactions. The immediate next scene after her coming out of the house is in Fujino’s home like she’s a socially adept person, a jarring characterization coupled with the fact that she sleeps in someone else’s house. There was no conflict after their first scene together. They act all buddy happy as if they’ve known each other for years.

To have gratitude for the things that have driven you, but to also appreciate the present. You can do something because you find enjoyment in it, and while artistic endeavors can be a channel for suffering, it's independent of it.
All this + that weird Japanese work ethic. It's also kind of telling you to just bust your ass and work hard, and that Confucian fate or some shit will just sort you out so long as you abide by it. They're culturally just a little off compared to us, so a western audience vibing with anything they have to say is a questionable prospect.
It's an alright movie, but you have to accept that it's going to be weird. It may as well be a period piece for a place you'll never visit.

“i need my art to have every loose end clearly and unambiguously filled. the idea of interpretation or giving space to posit on and discuss the motive of a characters actions is foreign to me because i have turbo autism that dictates works should only have one clearly defined meaning set by the author at publication.”

the moral was fujimoto trying to scare his assistants by claiming they'll be murdered by an editor carrying a very large axe if they strike out on their own, so don't leave him.
but it didn't work. his assistants left him and haven't looked back.

Some people are very autistic and live off feedback loops that can make them do bad decisions. Look out for them.
