I think the mechs work as a good background element and when there needs to be some action, but they could have been characterized more as everyone's chosen persona. Which is to say as the anime as a whole, this really should have been just about chikane and himeko, and it deviated a bit with these background elements they couldn't flesh out. But the introspection and study of each individual struggle is interesting, at least the main cast.
