Does anyone know where to find an English TL of the previour oneshot by this author? It's about a Japanese architecture student being hit on by a white woman in a westoid country. It features the culture clash between Japanese and westoid "dating culture". Seems interesting, but my own dekinai skills only carried me about 50% of the way there.

Yeah, the post Orleans story of Joan is pretty depressing for how she was deliberately screwed over by the Dauphin (later King) who kept giving her less and less money to maintain an army. To the point at the end that she might as well have been actively sabotaged as a way to dispose of her.

This quickly went from "historically inspired" to "historical fanfic" I personally don't have a problem with the latter, but if you're going to make a story about Joan of Arc don't put up with mega super uber bullshit like she accepted gold gifts and suggest she would proclaim any no name bishop for gold was the real bishop. Or that she wasn't actually poor. At that point may as well include the legend she was secretly from noble birth.

This isn't Joan of Arc.
This is referencing an actual impersonator. It was made clear at the start that this is a woman pretending to be Joan.
How did you miss that?

Also Joan wasn't extremely poor in the way that some peasant were utterly destitute at the time. Her father was the local village leader and minor landowner (50 Acres of property).
This meant that while she was an illiterate (at least in Latin) peasant, she wasn't as bad off as the serfs that would have still existed at the time.
>>
>>286237775
Yeah I know that but the story suggest she was accommodated, this is as stupid as to say that if you're not homeless you're not poor. The story also is not accurate to Claude owns story, she didn't face a trial saying people to raise for nebulous reasons. Her story goes that she actually went on to live a peaceful life after taking the same role Joan did when she was alive, even if she was not the real one. The one-shot take this to do their usual "wow so grimderp shit" that is usual in these manga since Berserk came. With the exception than Berserk has more going to it. Like I said I don't mind historical fanfic but at least put the effort to deliver a message and not this generic slop. Poor man's shoujo.
>>
>>286238036
It didn't say that Joan would have accepted the money.
It says that a girl that grew up much poorer than Joan and who doesn't have the voice of god in her ear would have accepted the money.
Joan herself would have almost certainly scolded the man and refused the bribe. But Fake Joan isn't the same woman.

Regarding fine clothing, Joan had an extremely expensive custom suit of armor made for her at a time when knightly armor was the F22 fighter jet of the era.
She wasn't greedy, but she was willing to take expensive gifts of some sorts openly rather than being totally committed to poverty.

I'm talking from the perspective of the author. I wouldn't mind a story that is just a slice of life with Claude going through the country performing small deeds even if mischievous, or actually helping to carry the war against the English, or mysticism. But the way in which the story is framed and the historical changes made veer too much into victimhood, ignoring far more interesting paths the story could have taken. This same trait can be found both in shoujo and often in historical inspired manga with western settings.

But I think the premise is interesting and the story is redeemed a bit by its ending, where the King found piety on letting her go. This is a one-shot so if the author decides to make a whole manga about it maybe it can improve from there if guided.
>Joan had an extremely expensive custom suit of armor
Joan of Arc was in the battlefield, even if she wasn't a common foot soldier she was in danger like everyone else. Armour was a need and not a luxury.

sure, but if you were rank-and-file soldier then the most you got was some hard leather and a pointy stick, metal was still difficult to make and time consuming, and most of the time you'd probably get chainmail. Interesting that the story doesn't mention that after the king pardoned her, the imposter went on to marry a knight, live in a castle, and have two children, given that in the one-shot so much focus is given to her lamenting that no one would ever marry the real her and that peasants like her can't get a leg up in the world and live in places with walls.

It's funny how every Joan of Arc story conveniently ignores her failed siege of Paris and how she was increasingly pushed to the wayside by Charles VII prior to her death. She led a remarkable life, but the unfortunate truth is she was more useful to France as a martyr than as a military figure.
>>
>>286259581
She was scapegoated.
>>
>>286259048
Kelly DeVries has a solid short book analyzing Joan's military acumen.
https://www.joan-of-arc.org/ is a great source for primary documents about her.
>>
>>286259581
The issue is that Charles VII started forcing a push for a political end to the HYW, while Joan and crew were still aiming to drive out the English and Burgundians militarily.
The first assault on Paris failed, but that was typical even for Joan. It was obviously going to take multiple attacks to crack the city open, and any reasonable leader would have known that. But instead, after the first assault didn't instantly take the city, Charles VII got his excuse to sideline her hard, and then started cutting her access to men and munitions over and over again.
She was basically set up to fail there so he could pivot his strategy.
>>
>>286259888
Which was based. Women should learn their place.
>>
>>286259888
> It was obviously going to take multiple attacks to crack the city open, and any reasonable leader would have known that.
Charles VII only withdrew after sustaining heavy casualties and failing to make any progress. The French army was also not at all equipped for a prolonged siege. They were already low on supplies after a lengthy campaign and had little artillery. It's true that Joan became politically inconvenient to Charles, but that doesn't change the fact that the Siege of Paris was a complete tactical failure by any metric.
>>
>>286259048
>but ugh
But nothing, it is a great book that is well-researched and a spectacular piece of historical fiction. It goes on flights of fancy and considers the aspects of the divine, but that is entirely appropriate for the 15th century in which Joan lived in, extremely relevant to her life and God's mission to rid France of the English
Twain was an Anglo-Saxon Protestant satirist, but even he couldn't find anything worth mocking the purity in Joan

Japanese religion, if you can even call it that, is based on folklore and tradition than any kind of scripture or doctrine. They're like if animistic African tribals who thought everything had a spirit (which the Japanese more or less do) weren't dumb and actually advanced past the stone age. They know of God and Jesus, but they do not fundamentally understand how all men could be equal. Best they can do is some Buddhism comparisons because that got really popular over there ages ago, but it still doesn't come close. Christianity is God created man and gave him paradise before he let a woman lead him into sin. Buddhism is we're stuck in a nightmare realm with different layers, some shittier than others, and we need to let go and ascend beyond.

They were already an up and coming world power around the turn of the previous century, well before WW2. You can find all sorts of political art of Japan being symbolically welcomed onto the world stage. The speed at which they modernized during the 19th century impressed the great powers a lot. >A saintly teenage girl who outargues a roomful of philosophers with no training, merely divine inspiration, is absurd. There’s no chance at all that such a saint might have existed, let alone been interviewed by a team of experts (under oath) about her entire life, and of course if this team of experts did interview her they would no doubt end up concluding she was a fraud, though of course we can’t expect them to mail copies of the interview to every monarch in Europe to prove it.

>And definitely nobody would ever, ever be so angry at irregularities in the first interview that they would try to themselves interview everyone she'd ever met about her (still under oath) and mail a copy of the updated and revised version to every monarch in Europe to prove that all her miracles actually happened.

>Meet Jeanne d’Arc, Maid of Orleans. Yes, yes, she defeated an invincible army and is a feminist hero and also one of the national saints of France, fine. More importantly, Joan of Arc is documented! She's a miracle-working saint who has evidence! She might have more evidence than any other non-monarch before the printing press! This is, then, an agnostic’s review of the evidence for Joan of Arc - artillerist, fraudbuster, confirmed saint, and Extremely Documented Person.
