BW anime had a complete rewrite very early due to a natural disaster at the time which completely sabotaged any chance of having a good story like the BW games did.

It's kind of magical how nostalgia works for S1 of Pokémon. You remember all the best parts and forget how formulaic / pokemon of the week it is.

It's been over a decade, but I remember feeling greatly disappointed when Team Rocket returned to their old, whimsical style after they put on a serious face for the first six or so episodes of the season.

I'd say there's a marked difference between pre-Porygon Kanto and post-Porygon Kanto. The hiatus gave them the time to really get corporate and risk-averse, leading to a whole bunch of boring and forgettable episodes between Fuchsia and Cinnabar that would become the norm in Johto and on, and led to them walking back on evolving Bulbasaur for marketing reasons. There were still good episodes, of course, but those were likely ones mostly made according to the original plan.
