Dark humor my ass, it's very light compared to the average Western kid's cartoon with just an exception here and there.44 episodes of nothing, just mild jokes with meta visuals, and the worst part is that the cult status it has is solely because of the manga ending. Which is bullshit, because an adaptation has to stand on its own.The only good parts are the openings and endings, but even those become meaningless when we never see the end of the story animated. And even if we did, it wouldn't justify 44 episodes of nothing.Waifus, my personal tier: Rin > Abiru > Komori > Chiri's older sister.Another case of anime fans hyping shit just because is meta.
>reddit spacing>reference to westoid cartoonsYup, I can safely discard this opinion.
>>290426775>44 episodes of nothinglow IQ plotfag filtered yet again, love to see it>solely because of the manga endingretard>Waifusnewfagterrible thread overall, you need to do some self-introspection
>>290426833lucky star doesn't have a plot either and is better than this pseudo-intellectual bullshit, at least is funny. You are the ones who laugh at a bald guy being inserted for no reason and then call others low iq.

>>290426775>the worst part is that the cult status it has is solely because of the manga ending. Amazing how not true that is.
>>290427450It would have been completely forgotten by now if it wasn't for niggas overrating it just because the manga ends in *Le mindfuck plotwist
>>290426775I always took Zetsubou to be a look at japanese culture more than anything else. The manga was full of JP injokes and spent dozens of pages explaining everything at the end, giving a better idea of Japan than just a regular story in a standard highschool setting. I'm sure that wasn't the intent when originally released in Japan, but it was definitely the most interesting part.Past that, I guess the constant zetsubou jokes would kind of get old. But most chapters just went off the deep end into something completely unrelated, so it was more a way of hitting the reset back to the "normal" more than anything.>44 episodes>animeAh, I see part of the problem. Humor like this never translated very well into animation. I always felt like stuff like this should be taken at your own pace, flipping thru pages quickly when bored and taking your time when focusing on it. It means that stale jokes can be passed over quickly while you can stop and get a chuckle when you find something funny. This goes double when you probably won't get the cultural reference, and so would be best taking the time looking it up to get the joke rather than just glossing it over.Animating it always fucks up with the pacing. Some lame jokes just drag on forever, and some stuff that you'd probably spend time looking thru get dropped after five animation frames, because you're relying on somebody else to use their own comedic timing, which was frequently just bad. Not that I blame them, but japanese animators don't seem to have the hand for comedic timing.Maybe that's just a culture thing, but it doesn't work out well with other similar manga -> anime adaptions, so I'm pretty sure it's just a consistent downfall.

>>290427574The show got 3 seasons and several OVAs before the ending so that's certainly not the case
>>290426775hmmm yep this is going in my cringe compila->Waifus, my personal tier: Rin nevermind, carry on, king
>>290427619Judging from what i see in the anime, the look at japanese culture is not that interesting or deep to justify the cult status this anime has, japanese authors lack that acid component that makes satire enjoyable because they are too afraid to ofend the audience. The observations that Nozomi makes lack poison and arguably, most of the things he points out are not exclusive of japanese people's behaviour.
>>290427876I mean, its cult status is obviously because it has a 90% female cast, that it's okay with showing fanservice about, and because its initial audience was young enough to think that nihilism was cool when it first releases/aired. It's not hard to see what the core audience is, and why it never really expanded past that.I'm just saying that, if somebody actually wanted to read it today, that would probably be the best they could get out of it. A lot of the jokes require explanations to even get the punchline across, which involves a lot of cultural context (and at this point, time-relevant context) to understand. So it's going to be more interesting as a timepiece and a more honest look at JP culture than just "lolnoose" over and over again.
>>290427818Japanese otaku will consume anything on tv, and flashy visuals will attract their attention. doesn't mean shit.
