Why don't they just cover the soles? Even if a magic effect is activated by bringing together two objects which completes a circle it's not like the circle HAS to be externally visible, no? Magic works if nobody can see the circle, right? The circle doesn't have to be on the part that that is visible and touches the ground. Why reveal their secrets to anyone who look at their shoes? And the pattern will obviously be easily damaged by walking. And the shoes don't even align properly which breaks the circle rule? The concept IS cool, technically, just doesn't contextually makes a lot of sense. But then again I haven't been reading a while so IDK maybe some magic rules explain why it's necessary.
