This is the most obvious "in hindsight, the ending was great" ending. See you guys in a couple of years.

If the staff actually confirms Luca and Lara did try to date for a bit during the 6 months any remaining goodwill from the copers/yurifags claiming that the subtext was explicit enough between LaraMari will disappear.

Ending can't be great because everything that could make it great was left totally unsaid and only barely implied over the course of 5 minutes. On top of that, CuckGPT over at Crunchyroll ruined the Luca scene and made it so ESLs and dubfags got a more accurate experience.

>>
>>291129005
Oh the twitterfags (both JP and overseas) are still coping hard. The nips that really want to like the ending despite it being bad are lightly throwing softball critiques ("I wish it was one more episode long...", "Well, a happy ending can't be expected with how many things were at stake...") before even deleting those tweets because they don't want to promote negativity towards the show. Even the poll here >>291128888 was deleted. Overseas twitterfags are still coping hard in other ways (insisting LucaMari didn't date during the 6 months and making up interpretations of Lara breaking out of her role as a storybook character or some shit).

>>
>>291128978
This makes far more sense. It's clear that he's talking about the confession scene from before, saying that it was followed by her breaking up with him, which he sees as impulsive. There's no timeline stated, so that's up to your interpretation. Personally, I just don't see them dating for long, Luca and Lara never jived together, so they probably stopped once he finished the portrait.

Have you considered theres people who watched the show to enjoy it, not for a stupid obligatory check mark.

Christ you guys are pathetic, watch shows cause they interest you, not because it ticks some generic "it has Yuri in it" marker or "it has a guy cuck the yuri lead" marker. Did none of you care about the story, cast, visuals, or work that went into this show? Did you really only watch this show on the vauge pathetic assertion it would have Yuri in it? Seethe more. It must be hard for your little brain to comprehend that there are outsiders who never gave this show a shot because they could tell a trainwreck is coming from the start and was just waiting for it to hit.

And I'm not even the same anon as this guy but Larafags have been obnoxious morons saying everywhere even in other fandoms about how their anime is the second coming of Christ that will save animation and yuri when it can't even write engaging characters like the previous Kinema Citrus work Revue Starlight (the original anime only)

>>
>>291129675
I've said this in a previous thread too but when it comes to yuri relationships they always have to go different ways to become better people somehow instead of becoming better together. This works for some shows designed specifically around it thematically, but it doesn't fucking work in most of the Utena clones. It just shows that the creator ultimately doesn't believe two women can have a healthy and mutually beneficial romantic relationship like a man and woman could. And that isn't even to mention how very little yuri relationships actually explore the idea of compromising while becoming better together, which is a very real and important thing in real relationships.

Typing all this just makes me realize how good ZLS handlded it as well as Futaba and Kaoruko's relationship from the anime t b h.
>>
>>291129717
Pretty sure it's not a trend exclusive to zoomers. It's a societal trend that started with gen-x or maybe even malenials.

Yuugiri saw Lily more as a daughter, especially when she died before she could marry the only man she ever loved in her life Kiichi.

It's obvious who the pretty-much-canon yuri ship of ZLS is, if you're trying hard to avoid mentioning it I can only suspect you are THAT schizo.

Lara was already shown to have become independent enough to work, make her own money (she repaid the broken window), go out on her own, communicate on the phone etc. Her relationship with Mari was never a codependent one beyond the first few episodes where she was a literal fish out of water. What we saw between them was only positive human warmth and support. Lara leaving everything behind to be entirely on her own isn't earned in the slightest and feels like the ending to a show they didn't make. The only consistent thing was Mari being shat on as she explicitly mentioned feeling lonely without Lara and just had to take the hit, plus Gon-chan dying and her mom's cross being destroyed.
>>

The real reason Lara left at the end is because, when looking for a place of her own, she quickly realized dreamy seaside towns are expensive as fuck to pay rent on a baker's salary, and set off for more affordable nippon living.
>>
>>291129730
>It just shows that the creator ultimately doesn't believe two women can have a healthy and mutually beneficial romantic relationship like a man and woman could
I hate it, but that's what I think is behind all of this. Girls liking girls isn't a genuine thing to the old fucks in society who are desperately trying to keep their views relevant, to them it's "just a phase" and the only thing that'll make a woman whole is a glorious nipponese man. Those men don't have to actually be decent people, though, let alone work on being attractive, don't you dare tell them that.
>>
>>291129579
>Zombie Land Saga
I only know that show because a guy that used to post here all the time had it on his 3x3.
>>
>>291129672
You're the only loser who talks like that about fandoms and being a vindictive shit because people you don't like like something. Of course, as always, it's just imaginary people you've made up to justify why you spend all day every day shitposting on these insane crusades to force narratives about shows.
>>
>>291129333
Anyone who was watching for the actual story/characters would've been put off from the show way earlier due to the pacing issues and random flipflopping between not explaining shit and exposition dumping - Lara's summary of what happened to the mermaids at the end was one of the most egregious.
>>
>>291129820
Why do you have to transform everything into a talk about politics? And your hate for the older generations is weird when gen z and gen alpha are the most fucked up and worthless generations living right now. Like I think the ending is shit but I don't get all this weird talk. The modern world is worse than what we used to have.

>>
>>291129856
I'm talking specifically about the very real views that drive anti-lesbianism in Japan and what ultimately causes this executive meddling in shows to make sure that the yuri doesn't happen. Seems like you're feeling called out, though, so I'd figure out for yourself why that is.
>>
>>291129820
>>291129730
A bunch of writers have that issue with even male x male romances too. Straight relationships are littered all over the narrative kissing and saying 'I love you' but as soon as it comes to the main pairing (either yaoi or yuri), everything suddenly gets 2deep4u and must not be stated with actual words or actions. Throw in a bit of pretentiousness and writers will unironically think they're special for doing this.
>>
>>291128530
No.
Yumemita was the best anime of this season. Feel free to watch it to cleanse the fish taste from your mouth.
>>
>>291129820
This is why the yuri in ZLS and also the anime version of FutaKao worked, because the pairing actually explored the whole journey of

>Mostly harmonious co-existence between 2 ideals just waiting to crash
>Development happened causing the 2 sides to crash
>Separation arcs that made both sides weaker the more it goes on
>The solution to both times they separate is always to work together/take the other back to their side
>The pair compromise in the end and continue to be together and became better people by the end of the arcs

The movie didn't ruin this entirely for FutaKao because they're literally pair that is explicitly stated to reunite afterwards, and that's why their arc was the only one that worked almost 100% in that ultimately unnecessary movie.
>>
>>291129895
>the very real views that drive anti-lesbianism in Japan
Yes and you are associating those with the older generation and the opposing views with the new "queer" generation while equating yuri with 3dpd. But that doesn't work because newer generations are just... fucked up. Think about it for a second.
>>
>>291129883
Never said anything about ugliness, being attractive to a woman is much more than being physically attractive. Either way, still doesn't mean you need to make it your life's mission to make sure fictional lesbians aren't a thing. Actual lesbians are a minority, so this is just a fantasy. The modern world's procreation problems have very little to do with the gays, it's much more about cost of living and social media poisoning thought.
>>
>>291129916
I'm not going to take your request seriously when you immediately jump to blanket hate toward the younger generations. Everyone has their problems, it's just that the older generations in Japan are very much about forcing women into being baby machines.
>>
>>291129941
>Either way, still doesn't mean you need to make it your life's mission to make sure fictional lesbians aren't a thing.
You can always just watch yuri manga adaptations thoughbeit
>The modern world's procreation problems have very little to do with the gays, it's much more about cost of living and social media poisoning thought.
The world doesn't have just a procreation problem but a sex one as well though. How do you explain that?
>>
>>291129965
Nta but I am a zoomer myself and Imo the hatred is very much warranted.
>>
>>291129857
Saki was always meant to be a traditional straight girl with that kind of character arc. Only delusional and media illiterate (accurate use of this term btw) ever thought otherwise and got mad at the thing with White Ryu.

The yuri ship of ZLS had the best dual arc in season 1 and the "best" in season 2 as well but mainly because season 2 doesn't really have character development arcs for anyone. In both seasons their arcs also tie closely into the themes and messages explored in that season while also showcasing excellent voice acting work from the respective characters, so it's no wonder why they are the 2 most popular characters in the show even more popular than femMC, and they're about as popular or slightly less than maleMC.
>>
>>291129333
Even if both Mari and Luca are genderless and whether it's yuri or straight does not matter, the ending is still atrocious.
Lara's premise from the beginning is finding "true love" so she can get her light back and revive her family. Then we spent the entire story with her trying to find her "true love" in human world. They could've gone with "Lara's true love is humanity itself" but they didn't, they explicitly stated that Mari is her true love and she needed to stab her to regain her light. Cool, now why on earth did she leave Mari to find another light when she already got her light back??? Especially after the entire speech about the reason she doesn't want to disappear yet is because she wants to live in a world with Mari in it? It's completely out of nowhere and she didn't even explain why when Mari asked her.
Let's not even talk about Mari, she's lonely, her mother died, she has no friend, the only companion she had was her talking fish, who died too, and now Lara left her as well. And her mother even had a speech about believing that Mari will have someone who will walk alongside her.
The writer is trying to subvert a story about finding true love to a story about independence, which clearly does not work as it had no setup beforehand.
>>
>he posted it again
>>
>>291129965
If we don't hate them, how would they improve? Hell if you want to talk about the accuracy, you wouldn't want a show with accurate zoomer characters that spend all day on their iphone or playing video games and are too afraid to even interact with a woman to begin with.
>are very much about forcing women into being baby machines.
By not making a yuri show? Lol. Most jap women literally do not watch anime so I doubt they care.
>>
>>291129801
At least she didn't become physically disabled like Suletta, though at least Tanuki got the girl at the end I guess.
>>
>>291130025
The main issue is that other subtext stories don't have true love/love as their central themes so it makes plenty of sense that any yuri romance doesn't get 100% confirmed by the end. But Sayonara Lara is literally about debunking true love being the pinnacle (apparently) and trying to do that while making the climax of the story some sort of love between Lara and Mari while not saying what that is (when it wasn't a problem for any of the straight couples like Rigmor and Rowan) only made the writers twist themselves into pretzels for no good reason. Talking in riddles for just the yuri pairing at the climax doesn't do favors for anyone.
>>
>>291129824
Reading this makes me feel depressed. 4chan ain't what it used to be anymore.
>>
>>291129898
I think many creators view yuri and yaoi relationships as "highbrow" elements to add into their works so they can pretend it's deeper than others by exploring "a very special relationship that is more than friends but less than lovers".
>>
>>291130149
That's what made it good, though. Suletta lost almost everything tied to her old life but people are there for her, Miorine in particular, but not just her, she has actual friends. Mari has... Luca? A guy who she doesn't even really seem to like, even in the most generous interpretation, she's extremely flaky with him. And no wonder, the most important person to her, Lara, left her to go become an independent wahmen who don't need no (wo)man. Not to mention that makes no sense after what Lara did to become human and what all of it meant to the both of them. Even without the yuri, looking at things with pure friendship in mind, the ending makes no fucking sense.
>>
>>291130171

It's a good ending. Lara realized that Mari being her true love is what ended up killing Mari.

So she abandons true love. She leaves Mari because that's the only way to protect Mari from herself.

The ending is meant to feel cold and invoke the idea of a final farewell.
>>
>>291130149
Suletta is starting to walk again by the end, she'll be fine for the life she wants to lead and she literally rejected Gundams to the point of poofing them out of existence so she won't need to be fit for piloting anymore. Plus Miorine works in medical tech so her dedicating her efforts to healing Suletta is perfect.
>>
>>291130213
I was wary since the start because it sold itself as a subversion of a classic fairy tale mostly known for the romance story, which frankly sounds very shallow and uninteresting to me and rightfully resulted in months of threads of het vs yuri fighting, while clearly being made by people who want to create their own Utena clones. That can never be a good combination.
>>
>>291130227
That's some impressive mental gymnastics there. The thing that happened is already done, Lara is human and she's only hurting Mari more by abandoning her. Of course, I don't expect the bug men to look beyond their forced separation ending autism to see that, so I'll settle for calling them retarded bug men. The ending is not deep, it's contrived and crafted to separate Lara and Mari. That's it.
>>
>>291130227
>It's a good ending. Lara realized that Mari being her true love is what ended up killing Mari.
But that issue was already fixed, the fish dagger is gone, she got her light back, she's no longer foaming, she already lived with Mari for SIX MONTHS and then she just randomly decided to leave because???
>>
>>291130227
This makes no sense. The dagger isn't the default state of the mermaid princess' light, it specifically only happened because Lara suffered from betrayal. There is nothing that suggests it has to happen again if her love becomes fulfilled instead. She's free to love Mari without negative consequences but... doesn't.

The MC is sent by his organization ACCA to visit the 13 districts to confirm the rumors, and discovers the districts want to conspire with the MC and ACCA to execute a coup to abolish the monarchy.
All the districts end up agreeing with the coup because
>Monarchy is gay, also the next monarch is going to be super gay, so let's get rid of it
ACCA meticulously plans the coup and right when they are about to coup shit up they go
>Sike, we were never going to coup in the first place
The entire show that was about couping the government was about not couping at all.
In fact, one guy who happened to not get filled in about the coup hears about it for the first time and goes
>wtf, why the fuck would we coup, that's stupid
Why the fuck was everyone on about a coup for no reason? They didn't even solve the problem with the monarchy. So the show that was about espionage and politics and coups was not about coups at all, so what was it about?
It was about bread, just eat bread.
This has nothing to do with Sayonara Lara, fuck that show, eat bread.
Also monarchy = based.

I was working under the assumption that Lara "killed" her old self and somehow switched her love from Mari to something else. Also the light that she found was different from the old light that used to power the mermaids. The new light also apparently has less mojo because everyone is still recovering and asleep.

The fish dagger demands the soul of her true love. Somehow when she killed her "old self" the dagger was freed of its demand? I have no idea.

>>
>>291130379
The dagger fulfilled the required condition of eating the soul of Lara's true love and turned back into light. Lara rejects that conclusion, lets herself get eaten, saves Mari and smashes the dagger. There's no threat anymore and it shouldn't happen again as long as she doesn't suffer a betrayal like the one she did from the prince.

The notion that she forces herself to just stop loving Mari on command when she rejects the need for true love is ludicrous after the whole show was spent on Lara trying to force herself to fall in love with specific people only to fall in love with Mari without ever trying to.

But how does she do that? Does she simply do it for free? Usually if you want to take something you have to give something back in return.

I'm thinking that something else was given when Lara crawled into the fish. Specifically herself, the Lara that came in was different than the Lara that came out. She lost a part of herself.

This is how I assume that she could "switch" her love.

You know what the ending reminds me of? It reminds me exactly of how G-Witch chickened out of confirming it’s main fujobait ship Laugue, right down to the last minute hetbait Luca/Petra character and uncharacteristic ending that feels like it came out of nowhere after building up to and confirming both Lara and Lauda’s feelings for Mari/Guel at the end of their arcs only to completely “nowayfag” them at the last minute by having them both outright abandon them in what could only be called the most bizarre, OOC moments in each’s show that felt like a complete retcon of both characters’ personality. It’s actually almost eerily uncanny how similiar both pairings endings feel…

I want to reiterate, both Lara and Lauda seemingly drop Mari and Guel (in a timeskip yet too!) like a hot potato after just reiterating that they’re the most important person in each respective’s lives. Both also have the element of “I can’t rely on this other person forever” too.

Well at least I can say that yurifags finally know how us fujos feel and what we had to put up with 3 years ago.

Japanese don't tend to offer anything in joint interviews except agreement even when it's fake. They just nod along like they understand. I can't recall the specifics but in their interview Koide said something about his work to create something difficult and a avoid a certain idea by doing this other theme. Tani pointed out how those are the same idea and essentially the same theme so he wasn't doing anything different. Koide responds with a "eh....well-" and you can see the interviewer pushes them into another question to avoid them having to disagree publicly.

Who knows. Maybe if he visits Kobe, he can hope. But the way they made sure their last talk was on the bridge basically implied that their relationship has basically fulfilled it's purpose and it ends there. At a romantic sense at least. It's bittersweet. But it was pretty sad hearing Luca trying joke around with her in a friendly tone at the very end and her still speaking to him in a formal tone.
>>
>>291130025
Having to be able to stand on your own two legs before being able to find true love is a fine enough message in a theoretical vacuum. It just sucks balls to dump that onto the viewer in the last five minutes with zero buildup and without giving a satisfying conclusion to any of the previous buildups.
>Let's not even talk about Mari, she's lonely, her mother died, she has no friend, the only companion she had was her talking fish, who died too
That's the most atrocious part to me. The show completely dropped Mari as a main character, we're not even getting the conclusion to her mom 2.0 died plot. And she didn't seem to care much either.

It's weird since all previous episodes were fairly focused, yet the last one wastes time on starting new last minute plot lines while ignoring essential main characters. What. It shouldn't take a genius to see that this sucks.

>>291130789
If that's the intended message of the show, then it's a needlessly bleak concept that seems to go against what Koide himself said at the start of the broadcast, on top of the execution being terrible. And think about the broader implications of Lara sacrificing her love for Mari to save her. Can she never develop those feelings again? They still spent six months together and yet she comes off as cold and distant to everyone. If she couldn't rekindle the light with the people she already knew and loved, why should we think she can do it elsewhere? Taken to its logical conclusion, Lara either sacrificed her ability to love in its entirety or she will never come to love Mari again specifically (and I think the show is pushing the latter interpretation from her line to Luca about needing to find a new light). Either way it wouldn't be up to her free will, her "independence" was still forced upon her by the mermaids' light just in a different way from what the merfolk wanted, and which the show spent almost its entire runtime on.

The epilogue feels like the Harry Potter epilogue. Season 1 is an easy recommendation to almost anyone, a decent bit of season 2 is more enjoyable if you have more knowledge of how the idol and seiyuu industry work in Japan imo. The movie is pretty good but relies heavily on your prior attachments to the characters from the anime series, which wouldn't be a problem for newcomers since us fans had to wait 4 years after season 2 for the movie.

Hoping for a sequel announcement at next year's live show, which seems pretty likely atp.

I also didn't read the gaiden manga which some people say might impact your enjoyment of the movie. I have my problems with certain things about the movie for sure but I'm not entirely sure if reading the manga in advance would've alleviated those issues for me.

Also there are 2 drama CDs and they're both very good especially the first one which really makes you fall in love with the characters even more. And the live shows as well as seiyuu live streams are all worth watching. There's 1 particular seiyuu in the cast who sometimes overreact so she's a bit annoying to me but it's nothing unwatchable. The cast all seems like lovely people, and it's also pretty heart-warming to see their growth throughout the series' run since some of the seiyuus were newcomers when the show started.

I mean let’s be real: this show, the surrounding discussion from staff, and especially the ending reek of disagreement on how the themes and narrative should’ve been handled and a lack of a unified understanding of what the show was trying to say. It’s a red flag when you say that everyone on the team had different ideas on what true love is and you didn’t want to provide a solid interpretation for it in the show ABOUT true love. By choosing to avoid saying something explicit they just ended up saying nothing at all.
>>

I'm not saying Iroha is a self-insert, I said they abandoned that idea and then they made her. And you can actually buy all the fate-defying stuff she ends up pulling because she's absurdly talented rather than lame.

I can't pull up the interview now but they stated that the initial concept had an average male MC.

>>291131713
The show trying to do like three separate subversions of its story in the last episode definitely proves that. Not to mention how the ending retroactively makes several (if not most) of the prior episodes feel like pointless meandering that didn’t actually teach Lara anything. The amount of characters in this story was unnecessary too, you could functionally fuse Luca and Mari into a singular character and probably tell a more cohesive story with the ending they went with.
>>
>>291131864
Sorry misread what you said. But yeah whoever suggested writing an actual character instead of a self-insert for the main lead was truly genius.

This is the most likely correct interpretation of the ending >>291130227 and everyone was wrong all along, “true love” wasn’t love of humanity/life/the journey/friends we made along the way, love of self, or even romantic love, it was always completely selfless love, and loving someone so much you’d be willing to sacrifice anything for them and love them from afar without expecting anything back in return.

To understand the choice made for this ending and answer to “what is true love” we first have to work backwards into the Original Little Mermaid tale itself, of which Sayonara Lara is a modern retelling and homage to.

In the original novel the Mermaid ends up turning into foam because the Prince doesn’t return her love, while this can be thought of as a metaphor for suicide what it really comes down to is that the Mermaid’s biggest mistake and why she turned to foam in the first place was because she was EXPECTING the Prince’s love in return and was really loving him out of her own self-interest for her own benefit, this proved to be her downfall.

In Sayonara Lara we bear witness to the after-effects of that tragic end, Lara still harbors bitterness in her heart over the perceived betrayal, and this is represented by the dagger that seeks to kill anyone who ends up becoming her true love. Metaphorically we can think of this as an allegory for Lara’s love/feelings being so selfishly all-consuming that she steals the very “life” from those who she falls in love with.

Lara’s lesson to be learned is thus to learn to love without expecting anything in return and be content with that, her previous attempt at love was impure, now she must learn to love “purely” and completely unselfishly.
>>
>>291131852
Mari is too nice for that. But she might get exploited herself.

>>
>>291131864

>>
>>291131916
2/3
She keeps running away from her feelings for Mari and trying to force herself to fall in love with anyone but her because she knows that love will kill Mari, and unbeknownstly for her Mari the person has become more precious to her than any feelings of passion she might have for her, thus fulfilling her lesson of learning how to love completely selflessly.

It’s this completely selfless love and Lara’s sacrifice of her feelings so long as Mari will live that ends up being the miracle that revives Mari, and with it also permanently transforms Lara into a full human being because what makes humans different from other animals and creatures is our ability to love completely selflessly and put others first before ourselves. In learning to accept love with sacrifice and a love without any ulterior motives Lara finally becomes a true human being, the other merpeople only knew how to love selfishly, and that is why they could never truly become human like Lara did.
>>
>>291131916
If you follow this train of thought, then Lara has completely rejected romantic love for the rest of her life. This automatically precludes her from a large part of the human experience.

Now by now you might be wondering “but anon, why does Lara have to end up leaving Mari if the threat of death from her dagger no longer applies now that Lara is human?”

Again, the dagger thing was always just a metaphor for selfish, all-consuming love that expects one’s love in return, if we think of it that way than Lara leaving Mari is her forcing herself to quell her feelings for Mari and come back once she’s learned to love in a less codependent, healthier way, to do this she has to learn to stand on her own two feet (represented both metaphorically and literally within the show itself with her new human legs) and not pin so much of her self-worth and sense of self on another person, so I guess the message is still kinda “self love = true love” but more so “true love = selfless love that doesn’t expect love in return” and the latter can only really be achieved if you have other stuff going on in your life and don’t put all your eggs in the basket of one person, this’ll be better for Mari too in the long run because she has to be okay with the idea of being alone too.

Alternatively, the ending could also represent a more grim theory of Lara literally KILLING her love for Mari in exchange for Mari getting to live again and being literally and metaphorically reborn anew. (Hence the “Sayonara Lara” title being able to be taken both literally AND metaphorically, it’s her moving on and becoming a new person by giving up the thing that was most important to her - that being her love for Mari).

It’s a sad ending either way and this isn’t unprecedented considering the original Little Mermaid also ended in tragedy and this is supposed to echo that just in a different way.
>>
>>291131965
>This automatically precludes her from a large part of the human experience.
Nta but I am scared I'll never get to experience that either and I am scared. I don't want to die without that.

Bullshit, Rigmor's true love was never portrayed negatively, she managed to bring light to her kingdom and even sacrificed her life to save Grace. She was just as selfless as Lara and Mari.

It’s worth noting that this interpretation of “selfless, sacrificial love = true love” really fits with all the Christian imagery going on within the show, since Christine doctrine also believes that true love ultimately equals completely selfless love where you become a martyr of sorts (hence the whole “Jesus died for your sins”)

I’m sorry but this is so contrived I can’t stand it. I totally get the idea of learning to love selflessly, but you can love selflessly while still being together with said person??? Mari is ready and willing to return that love and share her life with Lara, but because Lara has learned to love without accepting anything in return she’s going to deny that chance? Deny another fundamental aspect of the human experience? (I disagree with the take that selfless love is a wholly human thing, anyway, there are many example of animals that will prioritize others over themselves)

Lara and Mari's relationship was never remotely portrayed as harmfully co-dependent even hypothetically. They always gave each other space and in fact they were acting selfless all along, with Lara trying to leave so that Mari wouldn't be sad about her dying and Mari keeping her own feelings hidden to push Lara and Luca together when she thought that would solve the issue. The ending has no bearing with anything the rest of the series had shown.

Because again, this anime is ultimately a homage to the original Little Mermaid which also had a tragic ending, and they’re trying to keep the theme of both that and Christianity as a whole of being a martyr for love, see here >>291132011

>>291131985
Ok fine but why does Lara refuse to explain any of this exactly? She up and decides to leave seemingly out of nowhere after six months, claiming she needs to “find a new light”. She doesn’t explain anything to Mari, to the point where Mari is breaking down crying partially out of confusion, and doesn’t even show a hint of emotion toward their parting. You could’ve done a bittersweet or tragic end that was actually well written instead of this slop that I’m supposed to believe is higher art because it’s “up to interpretation” or some bullshit

>>291131916
>>291132011
How is Lara leaving Mari all alone after everything she has done for her, including fucking dying "selfless, sacrificial love"?
If anything it's the most selfish thing because she still chose to fuck off even after Mari told her not to and that she'll miss her.
Mari had sacrificed more things than Lara had for Mari.

Exactly. You can say that it’s codependent and use your visual motifs all you want but if all you’re showing me is happy and wholesome content between Lara and Mari where they manage to overcome obstacles together and support each other how am I supposed to interpret any other way than a healthy relationship? And you can say you’re tying the story back to it’s Christian themes all you want but you actually have to work to make that make sense and not just tack it on in the last 15 minutes of the show

>>291132049
>So in the end this really just was a retelling of the little mermaid with nothing new or interesting to say. Got it.
The “new thing/twist” is that it’s yuri and not straight and also to learn to love without expecting anything in return. The original Mermaid turned into sea foam because she was expecting the Prince’s love back in return, here she finally becomes human because she learns to love completely selflessly, that’s the twist (alongside the yuri).

I don’t think the original Little Mermaid was trying to teach the lesson to be content with loving without your love being returned, if anything it taught the opposite, that the ultimate tragedy is to give your love to someone without giving it back and it’s worth killing yourself over, Sayonara Lara actually subverts that message

We’re going in circles but 1) The dagger is a piss-poor way of demonstrating ‘codependency’ if that’s ur interpretation because Lara and Mari’s relationship was repeatedly shown to be healthy and one of the only ones that Lara could be comfortable in and 2) Lara needing to go on a journey of ‘self discovery’ and be content with not being loved back is bullshit because Mari DOES love her back and it is in fact more selfish and cruel to abandon her with no explanation given

Tell me how what Himeka did was self-sacrificial. The point of the Himeka episode wasn’t that she was being self-sacrificial it was coming to terms with the idea that love isn’t as simple as who you seem ‘fated’ to be with, and even after losing something so immense you can go on to find new love and connections. Lara abandons her new love and connections instead. At this point I think I’ve realized your just shitposting

This pic and the other with them chatting on the phone feel truer to what they probably wanted to portray than what they actually did. Lara's not across the world, she's a train ride away, her moving out is a good thing, and so on. Instead of all this sadness and coldness they could just have done like in these pics and half the complaints would have no reason to be.

Well again, maybe that’s part of the whole twist and homage to the original Little Mermaid’s tragic ending, since if you remember the Mermaid and the Prince DID have mutual feelings for each other but a misunderstanding and inability to communicate drove them apart.

>Looking at the script, I was surprised: a lot of the explanatory dialogue that was in the script has been cut out of the broadcast version. Was this a deliberate choice to subtract information?
>Koide: On set we often said, “If we do it that way, it’ll just become anime.” It’s not that we’re rejecting anime at all, but for this project we wanted to create something tough and raw—something viewers could feel had a real connection to their own lives. So we deliberately tried to keep lines that “sound exactly like something an anime character would say” as far away as possible. At the same time, that approach means sacrificing clarity, so figuring out how to convey the necessary information in just 24 minutes (one episode) was a real struggle and very difficult. On top of that, the writers—Kawara (Anna) and the others—had put in such tenacious effort to carefully structure the script, and we ended up changing a lot of those well-organized scenes. In that sense, a constant feeling of guilt and conflict stayed with us the whole time.
they basically cut out everything and explain nothing

>>
>>291132816

>we don't want to be like a regular anime!
This about sums it all up. It is no surprise only people who think they're better than "regular anime" are making shit up to praise this shitshow of an ending.
>>
>>291132829
>>291132833
What’s not “tough and raw” about conveying she needs to/will leave but not getting into the logistics of it all? It’s about conveying a tragic/bittersweet feeling, not explaining all the details of how she’ll even be able to make it on her own.
>>
>>291132792
Yes that's why Mari wasn't worried about Lara not having any papers just a couple episodes before. Oh wait, she was.
>>
>>291132856
It's certainly raw as in uncooked.
>>
>>291132819
It worked for the majority of the anime, but it doesn't work for a timeskip where the characters suddenly aren't acting like themselves and you're left wondering WTF happened.
>>
>>291131985
This is probably the correct interpretation, or at least the most coherent one that I'd like to think is what Koide was going for. But it's just not what the show was about for 98% of its run time. What the show was about was Lara angsting over having to fall in love with a guy while comphet (or whatever you think is is an allegory for) forces her to ignore the actual love interest.

You absolutely could fold that into an "even the actual love interest still isn't enough" end, but that needs several more episodes, not five minutes. And emotional payoff is important too - you can't just skip because we're so artsy and open to interpretation teehee and expect fans to not throw a stink about that.
>>
>>291132868
>Yes that's why Mari wasn't worried about Lara not having any papers just a couple episodes before. Oh wait, she was
Okay thinking about it further this would be a really grim and dark ending but considering the director’s words and the original tale, what if she “went away” to literally commit suicide and her searching for “a new light” is supposed to be a reference to heaven? This would also explain why she’s so out of character those last few moments with Mari and seems really solemn with a finality to it.
>>
>>291132882
This, I don't think that approach is bad in itself and it obviously worked at the beginning and I appreciate not making Mari a loud mouth but he just wrote a garbage ending. I hope this won't send the opposite message that "only shonen where mcs narrate all of their thoughts are good we shouldn't try anything else"
>>
>>291132888
some people are just content with headcanoning shit to justify liking garbage
>>
>>291132898
That would make NO SENSE considering in the LITERAL PREVIOUS SCENE she said she doesn't want to disappear because she wants to live in a world with Mari in it.
>>
>>291132898
The director said a while ago that he wanted a happier ending than the OG little mermaid got, so I don't think you need to go that far into darkness.
The simplest explanation I can find is just that they wanted to epilogue to feel all mature and looks how Lara's grown up making her own decisions and living on her own, but fumbled it and it ended up feeling cold and detached. That's all.
>>
I rewatched Kaguya and now I’m cleansed.
>>
>>291132856
Okay, so we're not supposed to expect it to make logical sense, and we don't get any explanation about why it happened. The point is, apparently, a tragic/bittersweet feeling just for the hell of it. Cool.
Remind me, what was the point of watching the previous 12 episodes again?
>>
>>291132910
The same approach could have been fine if some more time had been dedicated to it instead of just five minutes at the very end while we're speedrunning goodbyes.
>>
>>291132941
based, I downloaded the BD today, finna rewatch soon
>>
>>291132944
A reminder that one jap in takano's post mentioned that he expected this ending, because, in the opening, there's a scene of Lara standing on her tip toes to reach something, and he concluded that was showing that she was doing her best to stand on her own. Yes, someone thought the ending was fine because of a small scene in the opening.
>>
>>291132936
>to epilogue
the epilogue*
>>
I think the ending hurts more because Mari is genuinely a very believable character, very human-like and not something that you find often, especially in modern media. Am I the only one that felt that way?
>>
The issue is that they're trying to subvert a series about finding true love to a series about independence.
This would've been fine if it actually had a buildup but they spent the past 11.5 episodes building up Lara finding her true love and not about Lara being independent.
>>
>>291133004

It's too bad this show isn't really popular because whatever discourse around it we do have is genuinely hilarious.
>>
The more I think about this ending the angrier I am.
These separation endings usually have plot reason of why the characters can't stay together and that's fine. But here Lara just fucked off on her own volition even after realizing Mari is her true love. Even after Mari lost everything and told her to stay.
Genuinely, what the fuck were they thinking?
>>
>>291133004
She has trauma without having woman moments about it, that alone makes her great.
Turns out however that's primarily because the show isn't interested in any drama that isn't 100% about Lara. She's not understated, she's a plot device. At least that's what the last five minutes are telling me, and I hate them for it.
>>
>>291133137

>>
>>291133141
This time it's a character reason, and that's fine. Bbut you don't get to be privy to said character's thoughts that would help you understand her decision because... because. And that's not fine.

>>291132919
You can also just wonder how a show that was great for 11.5 episodes could drop the ball so hard. There's got to be an explanation that made sense in the heads of the creators, otherwise you're really just left with "Koide had a bad breakup towards the end of the production" as an explanation.

>I know, I’m sorry, I can hear the rage and fury it might cause some fans, but if I’m absolutely honest, distance has given me perspective on that. It was a choice I made for very personal reasons, not for reasons of credibility. Am I breaking people’s hearts by saying this? I hope not.

Take a break from here and go watch today's episode of Kimishinu.

GBC is not "CGDCT"
And even if you count it as CGDCT, Jellyfish that aired in the same season had terrible ending
>>

But they hate it.

who cares? faggy potter is 100% foid writing
>>

An actual author was disappointed enough he made a post about it. The disappointment had to be immeasurable for that to happen, considering how this almost never happens.
>>

does sheena stay in the kitchen this time around? mimi should just whip her a bit to teach her manners

Neither does Lara now.
>>

Hm, maybe I was too young when I read the books but I never really got into its shipping at all so I didn't mind the pairs they went with. I might change my mind if I read them again now.

After Lara left.
>>
>>291133415
Wow, we all thought that uncles were sad and unloved, but it turns out that women adore them so much they selflessly leave them completely alone... People who have partners who only love them enough to stay by their side forever instead of self-sacrificially moving three cities to get away from them must be so jealous of that kind of beautiful devotion.

Last original I watched was Towa no Yuugure and I think I like Lara more

Jellyfish was drama shit, not true cgdct. It's very easy to make an ending to a cgdct series.
>>
>>291133501
Does Mimi finally hit Sheena for not being a good housewife?
>>
>>291133539
At least they're self-aware enough to know Yoshiya would be the center of attention and that Mari would only stick around to accompany him rather than trying to pretend she made meaningful connections with Luca and Leo.
>>

GBC had as much drama if not more than Jellyfish

I've seen about a dozen nips complaining about the ending in my timeline, on main, not burners, with several dozen more politely saying they don't understand it, we're surprised or some other flowery variation of "u-uhh, okay, so that's the director's vision, naruhodo". As far as Japanese media reception goes, that's gotta be burning down the studio levels of hatred.

Goodbye Lara is for realists. Lesbianism is frowned upon in Japan. Both Mari and Lara would be more happy with a man and kids.
It's bitter, but it's for the best
>>
>>291133645
I think you just like the almost apologetic form of writing better. Even after going out of their way to post dissatisfaction, it's clear he still wanted to avoid burning bridges.

Yeah, this is bullshit. You don't face anything by ditching the people you supposedly "opened your heart to" without any explanation. Also, I like how this completely ignores Mari's experience in this mess.
>>
Plot devices don't have feelings, they can just be shown smiling even as their heart gets broken into a million pieces.
