Watched the movie, my theater was packed, a lot of girls and a bunch of them were cosplaying,too. I liked it for the most part, but you can tell it was somewhat patched together from last minute rewrites. The core story with Wasu/Walpurgis/Margarita was definitely written a long time ago and it's definitely the best part of the movie. Theflashback is great and the lore fits very well with both the TV show and Rebellion, and the reveal that the reason Walpurgis went straight to Mitakihara was that she was attracted to Madoka made the story come full circle. But Selma andXiang feel very, for the lack of a better word, Magia-esque. I actually really like Selma, though. If the movie needed a "villain" she works perfectly, and even if she didn't get a long flashback like Xiang or Selma it didn't feel like her character needed deeper explanation. She's cute and charismatic. That said, the movie really likes being ambiguous, leaving things to the visuals or up to interpretation more than previous Madoka, which is pretty heavy on the exposition; so I wondered why the nun in Margarita's flashback had the same last name as Selma even if they were clearly different characters, but then Selma even has a nun outfit in her own brief flashback. Are they sisters? Another interesting detail is that Selma's flashback shows her being the first that findsNazukasokotsune, and it's implied that QB guided her there. Rebellion would've said it out loud more clearly than everything got planned by QB from the start, like it explained the Incubators were the ones that sealed Witch Homura away from the LoC. And the weakest part is probably Xiang, I liked her as a character but she really is just there so Kyoko has something to do and to awaken Madoka... (cont.)

I remember reading that in an earlier draft of the movie she got killed off, and I can see where she would've gotten killed off, probably when Selma arrives to kidnap Madoka and just throws her away. Maybe that would've worked better. The ending is probably the part where the whole "visual storytelling with no little to no explanation" will leave people wondering what's going on. Honestly, it's not even clear if Madoka gets taken over by the LoC again since Homura manages to protect her from the big robot-like Madoka yet she still kinda leaves in the bench scene. It feels like the movie doesn't want to tell you what happened and wants to leave it up to interpretation, at least until the next movie comes. I found it interesting, but I can tell why it'd be annoying since that's not really how Madoka has been so far.
