There's an entire electrochemical psychic rapport system where a hypnotist will experience something referred to as the "fusion feeling" when they're successfully hypnotizing someone, and some characters have magical tells connected to their powers, like Davina's shifting pupil size. The books dive into crazier psychic powers as they go on, kinda like NEO: The World Ends With You; the second book is about timestop (including a final battle directly lifted from Jotaro vs. DIO), the third is about time travel, etc. The pufferfish face is from a page in that universe's grand grimoire of hypnotism containing that and a few other weird faces that can induce cryptic hypnotic effects, but I don't recall the author going into too much detail.
