(1/2) FOREWORD
I love /adv/. It is truly a privilege to be able to offer someone wisdom in their time of need. It is also an act of charity. I hope that at least one person will read this guide and take away something useful on how to give or receive advice here.

HOW TO ASK FOR ADVICE

1. Be specific - People are more likely to offer accurate advice instead of platitudes (ex. "just be positive!" or "don't give up!") if you clearly define your problem, your physical / mental condition, and any extenuating factors. Here's an example: "I'm a college student and I'm depressed, what do I do?" Ambiguity like this raises a ton of questions compared to, "I'm a transfer student and I feel depressed because I haven't been able to make friends at my new school, what do I do?" The problem is obvious now - anon needs help socializing and the best way to help him is by offering advice on how to meet new people. My examples are a bit oversimplified, but you would be surprised how many people omit key details in their posts.

2. Be humble - If you came here to ask for help, you need to be able to swallow your pride. This is a problem across the board, but it is most evident in dating / relationship / "why am I a virgin at XX years old?" threads. I'll elaborate with an example:
>A: Why can't I get past the talking stage with the women I meet?
>B: What do you look like?
>A: I'm average-looking, but I gained a lot of weight last year
>B: You need to lose weight and work on your appearance
>A: Fuck off, superficial stuff like that shouldn't matter
Everyone has low points, everyone has flaws - don't take it so personally if someone points yours out. After all, YOU are the one with a problem that needs solving.

3. Be skeptical at times - You're going to run into trolls and retards. These types are easy to spot, because their advice will come off as overly-hostile OR overly-confident OR it will lack sound reasoning.

(2/2) HOW TO GIVE ADVICE

1. Be specific - It's good practice to over-explain your position on something.
>A: Hey, should I move to X city from Y?
>B: No, that's retarded
versus
>A: Hey, should I move to X city from Y?
>B: No, that's retarded. I live in X city. The cost of living is sky-high, and [another reason], and [yet another reason]

2. Don't be the biggest cunt in the world - Some people really are at their wit's end and have nobody but faceless strangers to help them. I know that asking people to show compassion here is likely an exercise in futility, but whatever. I think more interesting and generative interactions come about when there's at least a shred of good will present in a thread.

HOW TO DETECT POSSIBLE BAIT POSTS
1. OP has literally the worst life ever - ex. "My whole family just died in a plane crash and I got raped two hours ago, what do I do now?"
2. OP is a super-NEET - ex. "I haven't stepped outside in 30 years, where do I go from here?"
3. OP is making threats of suicide - ex. "I'm going to do it and nobody can stop me"
4. OP is the most retarded person on the planet - "Just shot myself in the leg, how do I stop the bleeding?"

That's all I've got. I invite anyone that's been a longtime lurker / contributor to throw their two cents in and offer your own advice. Cheers.

There are some samrt asses here lately who troll by absolutely taking the threads in a different direction. Though usually they troll the bait threads so I don't really have any complaints with them. However it will start to get annoying once they start targetting stuff they dont like.

I think people need to completely remove their personal self from 4chan /adv when advising other people. i have been seeing people argue over "ego hurt", "got proven wrong and they prefer something else so everyone should too", "Too imposing with their preferences", "LITERALLY talking about themselves in someone else's thread and ignoring OP altogether", "talking like they know other poster are lying while proving nothing", "just retards speaking nonsense and advising with non answers because they were ostrasized?".
I advise people here to report trolls and remove any racist motherfucker because I have reported quite a few of them myself and the MODS usually remove them, also people dont report something out of your butthurt ass because the mods will BAN you instead.
This is a beautiful board and don't ruin it like this son of a cunt below:

He made a thread on a thread to vent out his hate for indians yesterday.
HE GOT BANNED. Dont do this shit here. Go to /b like other low lives.
