A former classmate of mine became a celebrity. He’s pulling a George Santos, including lying about being Jewish. Should I take his past to a journalist?
Growing up I had a mentally ill skinhead classmate. He got expelled for things like planning to burn the school down, threatening classmates, starting fights with girls, bullying Jewish kids whose families survived the Holocaust, Holocaust denial, telling Black and Jewish classmates to read The Turner Diaries, talking to neo-Nazis on Twitter and Stormfront from school, and having Nazi tattoos (later poorly covered; he just changed one number on a 1488). His family was rich and connected—an uncle was a local detective, so he never really faced legal consequences. Just psych hospital a few times, then private school.
Now, instead of end up in prison, he’s a celebrity. Commercials, movies. You’d know the name. For his whole career he’s lied about his past: grew up poor, was homeless, left school because of bullying (he was the bully). He also claims he and his family are Jewish. They’re devout Catholics. That claim is a local scandal in our hometown Jewish community. He may have distant ancestry, but he can’t even keep which side of the family he’s lying about. He used to hate Israel and blame it for everything. Now he’s a Zionist and works closely with Israelis (business partners, publicist, etc). Feels like cover for the skinhead years.
Should I contact a journalist? This is provable. His old HS-era Twitter with neo-Nazi interactions is findable. One of his closest childhood friends is a well-known groyper; photos and videos of them together exist.
It sits in my head like the tell-tale heart every time his face shows up in a tv or YouTube ad. I don’t want fame from this. I have severe lupus, I’m private, and the stress would wreck me. I’m also afraid of retaliation. He’s vindictive and unwell. I fear he'd burn my house down.
