>>4698190>>4698192If Disney made a movie that was all Parrots, this would be the villian.
>>4698194it's too bad gilbert gottfried is dead because he'd be kino in that role
I had a dream I was talking to a woodpecker and I told him his ability to peck so hard and drill holes was his specialty, what makes him interesting as a creature. And he's like oh I didn't know that was something unique, I thought everyone can peck wood. Then he got all cocky about being special and kept showing off his wood pecking ability. There was supposed to be some moral to the story like his cockiness spreading to the rest of the woodpeckers and leading to their downfall but I think my brain got lazy with the storyline and just put that last part in as an abstract thought because the story basically ended with him showing off by pecking at a block of wood. Like I imagined the moral of the story inside my dream but didn't see it happen.

Cardinal started singing yesterday. Thought it might be a fluke but he's doing it again right now at 6:50 am. What the fuck, the last "earliest Cardinal song" I have on record is February 2nd. Bro thinks it's springtime already.

>>4705421maybe but it's super early for them to start, I feel like spring must be near
>>4705444Yeah I was just being silly. It's an el nino year, so could be why. We had about a week of winter weather here around mid December, and it's felt like early March since.
>keep the same food as last winter>pic related doesn't show up all winter Where the heck are all the titmice!?There was a flock of 10+ here last year.I currently host a few Cardinals & Bluejays, like 30 mourning doves and 2 Downy Woodpeckers. I just want these fun guys to visit my feeder again....
>>4707336I’ve seen them
>>4707336I've been seeing them around but they only come mid day and just grab a peanut and go. Different behavior from last year, they would use my other feeders and come out more often, and sit on the feeder holding the nut in their talons pecking at it.I guess this year is a good year for birds natural food because I'm seeing reports everywhere that people are not having as many birds as years past.
>>4698194Umm sweety? disney doesn't ddo villains anymore, that's not realistic, society is the real villain
My capture of a Hairy Woodpecker.
>>4707336Especially in winter, these things can depend greatly on food supplies elsewhere. For example, Pine Siskins are somewhat common to uncommon for me, but if there are a lot of forest fires in Canada or the pinecone supply is low, then we will get a shit ton of them that winter. So it really can depend on what kind of food is other there and has nothing to do with your feeder setup.>>4707763They still do villains, but they can't be black anymore.
>>4700490>>4703497Recently I've been reading a lot about birds online, though mostly just wikipedia. Birds have tetrachromacy, unlike us humans with only trichomacy. Effectively they can see into the UV range, which indicates a likelihood that in some of species where sexes appear similar to us, the males may reflect more UV light than females, making them distinct within the species. An example I imagined up (which may be untrue, so take it with a grain of salt) is that the white cere of pigeons and budgies is super bright an shiny to them, and that the wing bars on some ducks may be like car reflectors. Makes me feel like the sorts of plumage which seem a different color depending on the way light hits it are probably super "ooohhh shiny" to the lady birds.
>>4707799very nice
>>4707854I have a few pine siskins mixed in with my goldfinches this year, in NH. It's the first year I've had them since I would have noticed the past 2 winters. They cool.
>>4708036yep we can barely see this patch on a male mourning dove but I imagine it's much more visible to them
>>4708049Bird vision wiki has more neat facts.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bird_vision>The perception of magnetic fields by migratory birds has been suggested to be light dependent.[61] Birds move their head to detect the orientation of the magnetic field,[62] and studies on the neural pathways have suggested that birds may be able to "see" the magnetic fields.[63] The right eye of a migratory bird contains photoreceptive proteins called cryptochromes. Light excites these molecules to produce unpaired electrons that interact with the Earth's magnetic field, thus providing directional information.inb4 I fuck up the greentextRegarding bird fight, do anons like Cursorial model, WAIR, or Arboreal model? Hello birdfrensI do not use chemicals or teflon, and my apartment is free off hazards-How are quail to keep actually? The videos and the one book at the library make them seem like small indoor possible chickens, whats the catch? I've dealt with ducks and chickens and they seem way more reasonable.
>>4714816Free roaming? Don't. They'll shit n poop n piss in hard to reach places. In some sort of cage, like a guineapig cage? Go for it! Outside of shiddin they don't shed that much dust, are super quiet and cute and friendly. Also eggz. Buttons are your best bet in that case. Picrel is how someone is keeping their buttons. They can be kept in something like this, personally I wouldn't recommend it since they're still birds and therefore still prone to RIs, stick with bars.
>>4714816The only catch with button quail is short lifespan about 4 years.
>>4714821No matter what birds you got, you need to let them free roam every day. And every bird will shit and piss everywhere, if you can't deal with that then don't get a bird.
>>4714829Oh sure they need outside time, I meant free roaming 100% of the time, like a house rabbit or something. Not a good idea with quail.
>>4714821>>4714823Yeah they'd be caged for sure, but I'd like to give them the option to free roam on occasion while I'm playin vidya or whatever
>>4714835>>4714829and yea I do have yard access for them
>>4714646Poor daffy
>>4714844Oh when I say outdoor time I mean like in your house. You can't let them outside if they're not in a covered run or something. Quails can fly and have 0 homing instinct, they can't be free range like chickens.

>>4717847that is pretty depressing, I wish I had a dodo pet
I spotted this little fella near my gym today, cute birb.
>>4717847The humans fear what is different Birds have no eyebrows/lips for facial expressions. The average person can read a mamal body language better than birds/reptiles for that reason. Hence why humans empathise with dogs/cats more than birds. Same applies for sounds birds make. An average person cant distinguish happy bird sound from sad bird sound, unlike the common knowledge of whimpering/purring sounds that automatically raises empathy. This low understanding of bird body language/sounds creates the illusion that birds are not worthy of empathy.

been seeing bluebirds come to me feeders, for sunflower, I guess it is hard times for finding insects in the winter. I will put out mealworms.
>>4719062i was not comparing mammals to humans specifically.but birds do not have lips/teeth/eyebrows/wrinkles.its easier to read the mammal face because they have those. a bird wont bear its teeth/raise its eyebrows/squint the eyes/wrinkle its face. those behaviors are identified in mammals and humans recognize mammal expressions because we create similar face expressions. a mirroring behavior. > just a learned behaviorsound is not learned behavior if you beat a dog/cat it will make a sympathetic whimpering sound but if you beat a bird it will scream alarmingly. the reason birds scream is an attempt to scare you but the reason dogs/cats whimper is to surrender the fight.
>>4719210anyone who actually believes cats are dumber than rats is an NPC>SCIENCE SAID THEY FOUDN EVIDENCE OF RAT INTELLIGENCE BUT NOTS CATSDumber, less complex rats are more cooperative with intelligence tests than smarter, more complex cats, that are also almost totally asocial, inherently energy conserving ambush hunter, and therefore harder to manipulate than an insistent forager. How surprising. Neither animal is aware it is being tested for its worth by soulless NPCs and must perform. They are still just animals. But the rat is easier to trick into performing than more complex animals like cats, up to dogs, up to primates, where the difficulty begins looping back because they are at the level where they can be reasoned with. You fucks would refuse to believe in god and simply say he is not real and can not be because science didn't prove god existed yet, and then go "OH MY SCIENCE, I ACCEPT CHRIST" only when he appeared, despite science never eliminating anything that might imply his existence either. You are a virgin until science has verified your sexual activity too. I'm sure.>>4719330Bird noises are coincidentally scream-like, not purposefully. They just carry over longer distances.
>>4719336the white bellbird produces the loudest call ever recorded in a bird, reaching 125 dB(A) (at equivalent 1m distance)
>>4719330>but birds do not have lips/teeth/eyebrows/wrinkles.Mammals might have those, but they are wired in very weird way. Which is about as useful as not having them at all.
>>4719343many things in nature look like other things in very weird way
>>4703497Interestingly primates are unusual for mammals in that they can see three distinct wavelength of colors and you'll find some of the most /fa/ mammals in that order. No idea why great apes ended up being so plain for the most part.

>>4719003you jumped to say something because you have shit for brains and are perpetually offended by things on this site
>>4719366Damn. That guy is studded out. The whites of monkeys
>>4719366>No idea why great apes ended up being so plain for the most part.In my theory, color is related to the animal's size, number, and cluster of species. Large animals are generally are not colorful, and the species will be spaced out. However, in birds, they live in clusters of multiple species; they migrate and mix with even more birds. To help differentiate each other, birds evolved into many colors. That way, birds don't mate with or migrate with the wrong type of bird. because how else would a bird identify other birds of similar size? They look at the other bird colors. and when there is so many birds of relatively the same size in the same place, you need more colors to separate them.Diet could also play a role; fruit-eating birds are more colorful compared to birds of prey, or prey birds need the camouflage.

>>4719732holy SHIT that birbo is moving at incredibly hihg speeds
>>4719440I like the way you form your own postulation. I've always theorized that since birds have tetrachromacy, they can find each other via UV reflection while flying, which is how, for example, ducks flock to a single pond while soaring despite not having crazy vision like a bird of prey. I also figure since most other animals can't see UV light as well, it doesn't have too terrible of a downside as they won't stick out quite so much to predators.see >>4708036 for more on my gues about UV role in sexual attraction.I'd be willing to wager this feature is more linked to species that fly like birds and bugs, and less related to small size. Basically making things easier to find in flight. Maybe size could be related though as UV reflectivity makes it easier to spot your tiny allies.

>>4757696I wish more birds would walk amongst humans
>>4757881i dont, it would be extremely dangerous for the birds
>>4757884Hey just because 99% of humans want to harm small animals doesn't mean we do, I want a big fat eagle to walk right up to me so I can pet his big beak
>>4707336i hear and see these in north texas all the time right now but they never seem to stop at my feeder (or i haven't been there to see them)
>>4757881They'd get hit/run over by cars even more than they do now.>>4707336Winters in particular can see a lot of variation based on food supply. It's possible their usual wintering spots last year had a poor harvest so they were in your area.
has anyone ever had an American Robin dance in front of you? maybe it was a unique way to say hi to a human? it came close to me and started shifting left and right really fast, either anticipating if I was gonna attack but then stopped and continued to hang around, and ignored me
Saw this little bro at gatorland, they have an absurd number of birds there. Ironically the only ones they have at exhibits are flamingos, some parrots, and a few kookaburras
>>4759704Babby egret :)
>>4759705Spooble my beloved <3 sorry for the shitty pics, I should probably buy a real camera
>>4759704>>4759705>>4759708Neato. I love Kookaburras, real ones and otherwise. I get a Perth Mint Silver Kook every year.
>>4721324no you're not, stop insulting yourself, friend. making any kind of mistake, big or small, never means you're "fucking stupid", instead maybe distracted or tired or apathetic or rushed or inattentive or clumsy.. be more creative and less demeaning with your words :)
>>4759548No... I see them in my yard and they mostly ignore me unless I get too close. They run around in a funny way looking for worms. Odd birds, I don't get very many just a few every year.
>>4761356I want to fluff dry a pengin
>>4698190My goose has finally started laying eggs lads. So stoked. I found her hiding a big clutch of seven of them under the chicken coop. She wasn't happy I took them but none of them are fertilized. What should I cook with them?
Fuck this bird in particular
>>4762368Do not fuck the starlings
>>4698190I was just listening to a Mockingbird mimic a Robin. I forgot how fun Spring can be.
>>4762433I wish just once in my life a female would invite me into her prolapsed cloaca.
>>4762368starlings are based
>>>/mu/121197675
>>4762988No
>>4762988they eat too much mealworms, my poor bluebirds go hungry.also last year I'm pretty sure they stole a red bellied woodpecker hole. There was some ruckus up in the trees. Red belly was making a lot of calls and looked panicked while the 4-5 starlings were up there making their stupid noises and crowding around it. Couldn't see too well all that was going on, but I was rooting for red belly.
>>4762296Don't you want goslings?
I asked a while ago, maybe a year or two back, wtf bird in Delaware sounds like a little girl screaming happily and was told that maybe there is an actually little girl screaming.Well, not five minutes ago I saw a bird making the scream: a fucking starling. I'd had no idea they did that. I'm sitting outside on my porch watching my kid play and I heard that scream and looked up to see a starling on the neighbour's cornice making it. Is this common or do we just have weird fucking starlings here?
>>4763097just post the video here
>>4764814They do that because sometimes it makes people drop what they're eating, yay free food
>>4764865no why ? you have hands and eyesyou can see it without problems and the 4chan servers workI dont know what your problem is
>see woodpecker swoop in and perch on the shepherd's hook for a few seconds>"Oh sweet, a hairy!">or was it a downy?fuck...
>>4701316lmao look at this chode.
>>4765057I love owls so FUCKING much
>>4766738
>>4764981I usually just guess. If it's big or the beak is long then I guess it's hairy. Doesn't really matter if I'm wrong, nobody else is keeping count.

Guys guys guys guys guysI put up a bluebird house last fall and a male bluebird is singing on top of it today and he even looked into the hole. Maybe there's a female inside or they're starting a nestI'm so excited
>>>/mu/121321570>>>/mu/121321570
>>4769532I still haven't seen a female there. Maybe she picked a different nest site or this guy just hasn't found a lady yet.
>>4769532Nice. I'd like to accomodate bluebirds but there are too many house sparrows around me for that to be viable. That said, watch the house closely.
I'm seeing lots of dead baby birds on the pavement. flightless. some far away from any nests. what's causing this?
>>4771462Luckily there are no house sparrows in my area. House wrens could be a problem.
>>4771725Best guess would be a crow or something raided a nest and flew off with nestlings and dropped them.
>>4769532>>4770369Just saw the male sticking his head in repeatedly like he was feeding something or taking something from inside, then after he stopped the female flew out! He's been positioned on top of the box singing all morning for days. I'm so happy. I thought it could be years before any birds used that box.
Underrated bird
Not sure where else to ask about this, might end up starting a thread, but does anyone know of a bird that looks exactly like a heron but completely jet black that could be found on the river Dee between England and wales?I saw one sitting by the waters edge while kayaking along the more overgrown parts of the river, but it seems black herons aren't supposed to appear in England. Around the same size and shape as a normal heron but all black including the beak.I also saw a mother mandarin duck with some young which was cool.
>>4773939I don't know your ID skill level, so I have to ask: Did you rule out other birds like Ibis, Grebe, Cormorant, even Loon? Those all have black or nearly black plumages with large bills.
>>4774198It definitely wasn't any of these unless there are some particularly herony variants I'm not aware of. It looked just like a heron, only black, including the beak.
>two fat ugly city pigeons on neighbour's roof>aggressively kissing each other>female lowers herself>male jumps on top of her>flaps his wings and jumps down againgot i hate those retarded animals
>>4698190Answer thread:>>4776372>>4776372>>4776372>>4776026They have more sex than you
>>4772058Soon little chicks will be cheeping from itCongrats on your success, you’ve made a bird family happy
>>4702608nopeople love them and want them back. thousands of them exist in captivityonly reason they went extinct in the wild is because their nature habitat got deforested. the amazonalso some people say they aren't rare and aren't extinct in nature. they think there's more of them deeper into the amazon which could be true since we know nothing of that giant jungle but better save than sorry
>>4720410they also can regenerate neuron cells so any brain damage isn't permanent but in experiments they're shown to lose memory faster and memory lost can be permanent probably because their brains always creates new neurons and without constant stimulates their synapses degenerate and forget skills or locations. they also don't have wrinkles like mammals which would make you think they would be dumb but they have a higher neuron density. they are incredible small but they have 5x times the neurons of a mouse with a similar body size
>>4776448I checked today, nest looks finished or close to it. That was fast. I can't see if there's eggs yet cause it's up 8ft.
>>4776439>bird sex apparently lasts 3-4 secondsdamn i'm jelly
>>4776773why
>>4776773They do some foreplay where the male stands on the female's back, they get the juices flowing first then just rub cloaca together as the male is oozing sperm.
>>4768280THE Agamia Agami
If the Passenger pigeon was still alive, would you dare leave out some birdfeed for them in your yard?
>>4778244>Be me>Putting out bird seeds for my feathered friends>Maybe some mourning doves, blue jay’s, or even grackles will visit.>Suddenly a dark shroud appears from the sky>”Whats that?”>Noises of harsh wingbeats heard and some cooing>”There’s like hundreds of them” >Every single one of them land on top of my house wanting all those black oil sunflower seeds >”Guys the passenger pigeons are back again!”
Ah, seems like this time rather than having this thread reach an Image limit, here it’s post limit, which anon isn’t roosting that’ll make a new thread?
