Wtf is going on? My dog is 8 years old and suddenly, randomly, out of no where is having horrible itching on her face and paws. Never had this problem her whole life, but now the vet says she requires allergy meds (even in winter time.) Her food says it's grain free, but apparently this seems to be a problem affecting my friends and family dogs as well. Wtf is going on?

Huh? How would you even check that?

diagnosing dog allergy causes is difficult without testing, and most people don't go that far. It could be environmental, a parasite (like fleas or mites, although these are a bit more obvious), or food. Just like people, they can develop an allergy later in life.

As far as food allergies go, usually its not the grain in the food, its the protein (chicken is a major culprit). Trying a food trial with a novel protein or a hydrolyzed protein diet is a way to check without medicating; if symptoms resolve, you found your culprit.

As far as allergy meds go, you've got options: Cytopoint is a once a month injectable that works amazing, but can be a bit pricier. Apoquel is a dece oral choice, once daily dosing of a pill. Work with your vet to figure out a plan for your dog.
