In action series, the main character is usually powerful and skilled and handsome. James Bond, for instance. In a romance series directed towards otaku, however, the appeal would be substantially harmed if audiences saw the main character as superior to them. By having meek, middlingly attractive, main characters that the audience feels superior to, even though they receive female attention, it gives the impression that the otaku could as well, seeing as he is superior. A male otaku that views a more handsome, more rich man get a girl in an anime feels jealousy, not victory.
