I'm about to lose my fully remote job to layoffs. I moved to a small town in the South last year since I could work from anywhere so there's no openings in my industry near me. Remote work still exists, right?

You can't make any decisions based on continuous corporate employment. Every single job is going to be moved to 1099, near shored, off shored, or automated. They don't want to employ ANYONE. If you need a corporate income to pay your 30 year mortgage, you are taking a HUGE RISK unless you can guarantee you can find another job in your area. That severely limits the places you can live. And that also guarantees you will be paying the most for real estate in these competitive, highly populated areas. You're going to be better off renting a studio apartment in a hive city so you can be close to your next temporary employment opportunity. Don't bother owning anything, it's going to be too expensive to move it all.
