Good morning, I like silver.
I've got some first hand information that might be useful to some of you. I recently traveled from the USA, through Japan, to Thailand carrying a 1 oz gold Krug. Partly as an experiment and partly because I didn't want to end up losing my property or worse, I made full disclosure all the way. As you probably know, the USA requires disclosure of cash or cash equivalents in excess of $10,000 when entering or leaving the country. There are no limits or fees or taxes or explanations required. Just disclosure. Failure to disclose and they just take your shit. When I left the USA, I had the Krug and around $5000 in cash on me. The total value was around $10,000 so I sought out Border Patrol to disclose. It was a bit of a hassle getting to the proper Border patrol agents. It seemed like it was an uncommon request. Anyway, the Border Patrol guy was pretty cool. He spoke with disgust about how the government will use any excuse to take your money and said there will be no mercy if they catch you carrying over $10,000 without disclosure. But he said they don't deal with gold. It isn't covered by the disclosure requirement. The interesting part is that he said the reason they don't care about gold coins is because they have no serial numbers. They are only interested in cash and other paper that can be traced via serial numbers. Of course some gold bars have serial numbers, but the government doesn't track them the way they do cash, bonds, cashier's checks, money orders, etc. So, no need to declare gold or silver coins. And probably no need to declare gold or silver bars even with serial numbers. On to Japan.
Continued . . .Japan has a customs declaration form that specifically calls for declaration of gold in any form or amount. And my understanding is that they assess a tax on entry. I specified on the form that I had gold. When I got to the customs lady, she asked me about the gold. I showed her the coin. She asked if I only had one (answer yes). She looked at it briefly. She noted that I was just doing a layover in Tokyo, staying at the airport hotel, and leaving the next day. She waived me on. I think both factors are significant - small amount and just passing through. A larger amount or longer stay in the country at large may have been different. Remember, even Japanese officials don't want extra work if they can avoid it. The best bet if passing through like I was is to stay in the "airside" hotel inside the security perimeter. Then no declaration is required at all.On to Thailand
wtf is going to happen when it becomes prohibitively expensive to make electronics
