Been at a fortune 500 company for 4 years. No problems until today. I'm a dev btw. Get random email from my manager today about a performance meeting. No mention of my performance prior to this aside from a comment about me not always being in the office as much and working from home.

Thing is I've been crushing it at work and been getting nothing but praise from clients and managers. Just last week the manager from the PIP meeting was telling me I'm being moved to another team because I completed so much work on the current one and they need my assistance with another dev team. Now he's saying bs out his ass about performance. And unironically while I'm on the call with him and hr today about this PIP bullshit another manager pinged me to tell me several clients were telling him how much they love working with me

It feels like the goals in the PIP are set up to make me fail. They basically want me working across 3 teams all at once now along with some online classes because I "lack skills" even though I've taken their skill assessment tests and scored proficient on them. I honestly hate the place so I'm not worried and I've got some investments I can liquidate to help me out with bills until I figure something out or get another job. I'm just so confused like what in the fuck caused this? Not only have I done what's been asked of me but I complete more work than others and that's easy to prove. They've got the metrics so what the fuck. Now I gotta look for another tech job in this bs industry.

Yeah, that's what I figured I'm just struggling to understand why but I guess the answer to that may not be as important.

I asked them a ton of questions about it and they kept beating around the bush or giving me bs answers. I.e. we migrated from azure to github and I asked what the new pipeline was called for a certain deployment and my manager tells me that shows I'm not an expert. Just utter bs. If they agree then just meet the requirements and stay, if they don't have time or they won't help then they've already decided to can your ass and it's better to just start looking for a job now than get the scarlet letter of underperformance on your record.

If you want to be a pain in the ass, go to a doctor and say you have burnout/depression/PTSD/whatever then say you need to take disability leave. The leave will freeze your PIP essentially (for a little bit).

Get an attorney and file complaints about this to your state's labor board and OSHA. It won't stop you being fired but you can get a big settlement on your way out.

Don't worry about the cost of an attorney they'll take their cut from your settlement if they're good and you have a proper case. Most will at least review your situation at no up front cost and tell you if it's something they're interested in or not.

Also start documenting all contact you have with your supervisor in a work diary. Seriously. That's evidence for court later, and protects you from more HR shenanigans (and gives you ammo against them). Yes, your inane scribbles count as evidence in court.
