Yes. Some of them manage to get full disability after a few years and are set for life with a cheap monthly paycheck. I have a friend who did this, he did 4-8 years in the air force and gets a 4-5k a month paycheck for the rest of his life because he got anxiety. He became so ashamed of himself (which at least means he is a human, and not some 40iq trailer trash) and moved back into his parents house and deleted every trace of him ever existing. His social media, steam account (made it private), snapchat, everything. I have tried messaging him for the last 4 years, and get ignored every time. It's a shame because he was a great guy. Another person I know as well somehow was able to move to eastern europe and still gets another paycheck every month. I have no idea how. He will never have to work again there. Some people however, genuinely think they were captain america and are entitled to a monthly check, free loans, healthcare, and everything else in between. It's not like they saw combat or anything, a lot of the military is desk work in an office. By deployed, he prob got to go to Guam or Japan, or Germany for a free vacation for a year.

it is very common. I think you have to look at it this way: these are people who have no prospects and would likely be on welfare one way or another. sure, maybe there are some edge cases where someone who would have been more ambitious gets tempted by this and becomes a neet as a result. but the rest of them aren’t ambitious. that’s why they joined the military in the first place. so we as a country have decided ok, we’ll pay you a subsistence wage to check out and leave the productive work of society to more ambitious, serious people. it’s like being a neet with a few more steps and slightly more generous benefits. in my opinion it’s a small price to pay to shoo these types of people out of the way.
