I personally dislike it because it encourages a breadth of people who have no interest in the medium, or any franchise they are cosplaying, to enter cons primarily for the sake of financial gain rather than any interest in a cartoons, comics, anime, gaming, etc. Nothing is more irritating at a con than talking up a cosplayer who has never once touched the series they're cosplaying, and just like gym scrotes who are walking around in their negative-effort Inosuke and Goku cosplays, the fact that I can literally visually identify ulterior motives makes for bad experiences.
