What's a good bourbon for men? Is horse soldier commander premium select straight ok? It says straight so that's reassuring.
Local liquor chain always ties their annual major allocation drop to a charity raffle. If you win you can buy the corresponding bottle for MSRP. Won this bad boy. Gonna open it when my brother gets married later this year.

>>21898789too much branding for something that will inevitably lose to the BWC
>>21898665I’m giving up bourbon for everI’ll drink something delicious instead, like scotch
I'll always stick with the trusty Knobbler, she never fails me.I'm giving up eating out/eating as a luxury for Lent. Focusing on cooking simple meals, sticking to one meal a day.
>>21899069Knob Creek sounds like a gay bar.
>>21899083You're not wrong, but it's one of the best bourbons for the quality/price ratio.
Rye bros is whistle pig worth checking out? They want 80 for the 10 year and 120 for the 12. Most ryes aren’t aged that long I want to try but it’s pricey when I can get willet and sagamore for 60.
>>21898776This but unironically.

>>21898926>114 proofCertified Big Dick Boy right here.>>21899069>100 proofI can tell that you're barely average in cock length
>>21899241Mostly agree a good rye is better than a good bourbon but there are a lot of bad ryes and they are usually worse than a bad bourbon.
>>21898789Try the Black Booster
>>21898665>Who's giving up whiskey for lent?I'm giving up alcohol. I was getting into a consistent habit of 2 drinks/night and need a reset so it works out great. I might have to make it an annual thing.>>21898846>ASLEEP MANY YEARS IN THE WOOD>10 SUMMERS OLDCringiest thing I've ever seen written on a bottle by far.>>21899241So far the best whiskey I've had was a bourbon. Ryes are great but I love sweets and a rich fruity bourbon is hard to beat.
>>21898665This may sound like a troll question but I promise you its not: is there any decent introductory whiskeys for people like me who aren't that big into alcohol? I want to broaden my horizons a bit more. I don't like dry stuff, beer-y flavors or a lot of burn, if I do alcohol its typically sweet cider. Any recommendations?
>inb4 46%I WAS IN THE POOL!
>>21899269>cringey label That’s just the story of rip van winkle - it’s named after a folk tale
>>21899273Not a dumb question. See below for some options that are also somewhat easily obtainable.>Buffalo Trace>Maker's Mark>Old Forester 1870 Original Batch>Woodford Reserve>Still Austin>PenelopeAll are usually easily available and no more than $30-$50 on average
>>21899273You probably want a 90-100 proof bourbon. I don't have any suggestions because low proof whiskey is for children.
>>21899273sounds like you want to stay on the rum/brandy/liqueur side of things if you still want flavor. most of the time the burn can be mitigated by taking smaller sips and letting it start to evaporate on your tongue some before swallowing. sounds dumb, but it works and over time you wont notice the alcohol as much although bad products will become easier to spot as the longer they sit on your palate the more the cheapness is apparent. sometimes adding small amounts of water can drown out the proof but sometimes it can have the opposite effect if the product is rushed or doctored.
>>21899273Start with a bourbon, something like buffalo trace. Should be sweet and approachable. Or an Irish whisky.Try it on ice, if you don't like it, use it for drinks like whiskey sours or something.
>>21899179I had their 10 and I was very disappointed. The worst 100 bucks I spent on rye whiskey the 2nd worst being heaven hill grain to glass. For 60, you can't go wrong with either. Both are excellent rye whiskies.>>21899273Id just sip on cocktails. Not trying to be a snob btw. It takes a while for you to get past the alcohol burn to taste all the notes and enjoy it. You'll have a better time drinking craft cocktails than trying to sip whiskey neat.
>>21899282>metallica ryeIs it even any good, mr. micropenis?
>>21899323not bad. it was marked down from $36.99 to $24.99. only had the neck pour so far. nose is sweet but not very distinct of either finishing cask. palate is typical dill pickle-esque rye profile. first american whiskey I bought since 2023(Isaac Bowman Port finished, redistilled Buffalo Trace, not bad for the price). emptied the glass last night and this morning it was barely aromatic, which is odd of any of the American whiskeys I've had. usually heavy vanilla and cocoa candle type linger in the glass. there was a lot of oak residue in the glass when I cleaned, more than any other I've ever poured. I'm gonna give the bottle a good shake before the next pour.
>>21899308I have willet and sagamore cs right now and both are great. Also have green river rye which is just ok and bulleit rye which is barely ok. Looking to try some different ryes I heard new rift single barrel rye is one to try but it’s hard to find.
>>21899273I shit you not try Rebel 100
>>21899336Eh, I'd buy for the novelty it if i could get it for under $30. It doesn't sound worth it otherwise.
Got a pristine unopened bottle of this Seagram's from my grandmother (she only drinks white wine, was my late grandfather's). Anyone know much about it? Mine has a tax stamp for 1987. Hear it's not a pricey one even now, but I think it could be a fun one to drink neat sometime. I'm used to modestly-priced, newer bottlings. Never something this old.
My local liquor store is closed for the next 4 months for renovations :(
>>21899625"closed for renovations" just means it's really easy to get into the storeroom when nobody's there by pushing aside a tarp or something.

>>21899646Nah, they were clearing out all the stock over the last 2 weeks, store was basically empty when I went the other day. They're also like 3-5 blocks from their central warehouse, so yeah there is nothing left at the store now. They already renovated one of their other locations nearby recently with their new branding, and this store is expected to follow suit. Pic related is the other store, has a little tasting room area now.

>>21899771Lol, it's goverment run. Everything is MSRP by law. They literally aren't legally allowed to make a profit.
there's something about jack daniels
>>21899940>there's something about jack danielsTastes like bananas.
>>21899940I was in a liquor store once when a man with a dark complexion became very excited upon seeing this bottle. I lol'd but I still think about it sometimes, wondering what was so exciting about a mid-bottle priced at 160 goybucks. He was talking out loud to himself about how his friends were gonna love it, so I wonder if he mistook it for a Jack 12 or 14. I hope he enjoyed it though.
>>21899940>>21899942Tastes like vomit.
>>21899796yeah. neck pour started to open up nicely. went into short bread and sugar cookies, light lemon frosting and tootsie roll chocolate. reminds me of an unpeated Campbeltown.

>>21899948the actual Sinatra Select was in the the $750-$1k range last I saw.>>21899942used to be banana bread but the last few swigs I had from my sisters bottle it was more peanut forward with a pancake syrup sweetness.
>>21898776I’m currently drinking Bladnoch Vinaya at 43.4% and branched out to Kanomori craft gin at 47%. Last week I polished off a bottle of Jack Daniels’ bonded at 50% (as all bonded whiskies are). Glad I meet with your approval.
>>21899241Peated scotch > non-peated scotch > Jones’s scotch > Rye > bourbon > American whiskeyI tried Tin Cup a couple of months ago and it was undrinkable filth.
>be me>Australian>even a middle of the road rye like Sazerac is $110 a bottleOur federal government has been handsomely pre-paid for my inevitable liver transplant. That said, Rittenhouse bonded is on special for $89 right now, might grab a couple tomorrow.
>>21900103are aussie dollars worth nothing? I can't imagine paying $90 for barely above well liquor named after a mass shooter
>>21900106Our government taxes the fuck out of spirits. The average bottle of spirits collects $40 for the federal government when it hits the shelf. Bonded stuff starts at $50 in tax and excise. Shits fucked m8. >named after a mass shooterYou’re nowhere near as clever as you think, Ja’Marcus.
>>21900103why is it that every time I hear about australian law or politics it sounds like a dystopia
>>21900119Because it fucking is. In my lifetime we’ve gone from the white mans’ paradise to a multiculti hellhole held together by two slightly different favours of globalist authoritarian cunts.

Rye is the ultimate expression of whiskey. Scotch and bourbon fags on suicide watch drinking their corn syrup and 80 proof caramel colored slop.
>>21899385Kings county rye for something really unique but it's pricey. If you can find them at sale that's what I'd grab.
>>21900463Most ryes taste pretty much the same. The rye throughline overpowers any subtlety. Not bad whiskey, but boring to be sure.
>>21900143oh no I have to learn another language! don't threaten me with a good time.
>>21900542Wrong
Most peated scotch taste pretty much the same. The smoke overpowers any subtlety. Not bad whiskey, but boring to be sure.
Am I wrong for wanting a smoked rye? Surely it has potential to be good?
>>21900629I think they did that already. cant remember the brand name but they also did one called Ryemaggedon or something like that.>>21900626on a very basic level of understanding simply due to the fact that most heavily peated Islay whisky is made from Port Ellen maltings. try something like a Kilchoman 100% Islay and you'll be asking wheres a the peat
>>21900542>>21900626Facts
Ive got a bottle of Buffalo Trace Peated. Is it worth opening?
>>21900921>buffalo trace No
>>21898846Do your brother an even bigger favor and tell him to call off the wedding while he still can...
>>21900921If the secondary market weren't so retarded then yeah that's an interesting bourbon but it's like 500 bucks for a 9yo buffalo trace so no way. If it were me I'd flip it on boomerbook and buy more reasonably priced peated bourbon from a different distillery.

>>21901616I also need to double check that the yeast I am throwing in also has enough nutrients even though the mass of other shit should also have lots.
>>21899269>an annual thingwow you sound like a great poster for /wg/
>>21901725I don't understand anon, what's the problem with taking an annual break from drinking? I can still discuss whiskey without actively drinking it.
>>21900007>>21900010How much is it I would love to try some
>>21901725I don’t drink and have a huge collection I do sample stuff from time to time - so when I drink it’s like a quarter shot at a time I know a ton about whiskey as well. I could probably make some at this point I have an infinity bottle too and it isn’t great are infinity bottles just a silly idea? Who actually expects an infinity bottle to be great?
>>21901983mine is pretty good it's just that all this flavor hits you and then the finish drops off a cliff
Thoughts on Penelope Rose finish?
>>21901983Nah. If you’re dumping last dribbles, that’s oxidized crap and it’s going to taste like it. Mixing spirits can make something truly insane, but from my experience 99/100 times it’s going to be hot garbage. I keep separate infinity bottles by whiskey type and only add fresh neck pours. Never had a bad blend.
>>21901974Oh I thought you meant sipping whiskey once a year
>>21900463There’s only like 3 large distilleries that aren’t MGP
>>21900645>Port Ellen maltingsredpill me on thisdo they use different peats to supply to the different distilleries or what cause ardbeg definitely had a different smoke than tobermoy or lag
>>21901976$114.99 shelf, $125 after tax. vanilla custard on the empty glass.
I like Islay, can't stand Speyside. Any recommends for next Scotch area to give a try?
>>21902316they have two levels of peated malt using local peat, both dry and wet varieties, a medium level which is 30-40ppm pre distillation and high level 40-50+ppm, which most use. on the high level they start with the drier peat to quickly prep the malt for intense smoking, which is when they switch to the wet peat and it will smoke for 24-48 hours depending on how wet the peat is.Ardbeg's smoke is helped by the maltings, but also their fermentation, the stills(shape/reflux/cooling), distillation, cuts, blending and maturation play a considerable part. Tobermory(Ledaig) uses the medium level peated malt which is why it allows for more flavor and complexity. I'm not too familiar with Lagavulin's setup as it falls under the Diageo umbrella and I dont bother with their products after too many disappointments.>>21902404what Speyside's have given you the icky in particular? If your looking for the sweet side but like peated, Bunnahabhain is basically the Speyside of Islay, producing both peated and unpeated single malts.
>>21902404Sherry-cask aged, obviously.Glendronach 12 is the obligatory starting point.
Fuck that anon. Craigellachie 13 is delicious
>>21898918>>21898918This is literally what happened in college with a local dive bar that all the boys would go to for Sunday football . One douche brought his girlfriend. Within six weeks, it went from a place to hang out to a meat market
Rye bros I tried whistlepig 10 today and it was gross. Who is buying this for 80-100 dollars?
>>21901616At some point I need to learn a lot more about yeast too. Using turbo is good for me at the moment, but I think it's the thing holding back my quality the most. When I have left buckets out in snow storms and it stayed warm all night something is going on.
>>21898665I just drink Jim Beam with water. What's a step up without much of a cost difference?

>>21903080Do they even distill anything I thought they sourced all their stuff from Alberta distillers
>>21903099his credits are Master Distiller at Maker's Mark and Hudson Valley and then more consulting for half a dozen others.
>>21901616Let us know when you’re kicking off anon.>t. 185 proof achieved
>>21903176I have never gone for a higher proof. I get 160 just running it. I might do a bigger batch next time with a stripping run but as I said using turbo I already have flavor issues so I'm not sure it will help a lot. Thinking because this run is to pay off some markers I'll add a lil fruit at the end so it's less rot gut.
>>21903176>I think you should learn how to greentext
>>21903191Are you using a reflux still or an alembic/pot still? Refluxes will give you ABV without flavour.
>>21903233I take off the reflux tower to keep the flavor
>>21900542>>21900626A drop of peated scotch into rye whiskey is usually fantastic sometimes it turns into pure tar though
>>21903233I may also not run the reflux cap this time and just run the condenser to get more flavor and volume. But again again turbo makes some gross flavors so who knows. If I was really smart id figure out if the fruit or the turbo flavors were lighter and be able to tune it a bit.
