I have a dripper I got for free at work, I put folgers dark roast in it. It lives in the garage and gets used when I am doing winter woodworking, its nice having that seeming limitless supply of hot coffee to keep me warm when it is below freezing. Sometimes I forget to make sure it is completely empty of water when done for the day and it freezes.

I could see coffee from southern India being pretty good, honestly. Might try to find some out of curiosity. Same relative position to the equator as Indonesia/Ethiopia/Central America, so I don't see why they couldn't grow there.

I can't believe agriculture still depends on geography in 2026. Latitudes and mountains, really? It should all be greenhouses and genetic engineering and shit.
>>
>>22210034
A lot of plants won't fruit without being frozen for a few months, so your greenhouses would also need to be a giant and very expensive freezer.

There's a random dude in the mountains of North Carolina who runs a coffee shop and grows his own coffee in a hydroponic farm, but the beans are incredibly limited and cost an absurd amount. Like, $120 for 8 ounces absurd. I know there is zero chance those beans would taste better than than the $16 bag of honey processed ethiopian beans I usually buy, but man I am curious to know...

What do you guys think about portable espresso? Is it really worth investing in a whole machine when I can get a picopresso or something, especially if I'm just gonna be making 2-3 cups a day? Well I'm not sure if there's something much better than a picopresso, but that's the one my barista told me about.
>>
>>22210871
>picopresso
Never heard of those until now but watching a video, even with preheating both the picopresso and the cup the resulting coffee was only 140f. Seem kind of cool but $130 for luke warm coffee is a little silly to me, would rather just use a french press or Neapolitan flip, both of which can be had in double wall stainless to keep things good and hot.
>>
>>22210878
Gotta look up Neapolitan flip, but a french press doesn't make espresso, right?
>>
>>22210881
Neither do espresso but both can make good strong coffee. French press will get stronger than Neapolitan which is ultimately and old fashioned drip maker which does much better than most any other drip.
>>
>>22210883
Want espresso specifically though.
>>
>>22210885
From what I am seeing for these portable espresso makers that means accepting coffee which is not particularly hot, is 140f coffee hot enough for you? Shame that no one seems to make an insulated version.
>>
>>22209994
i really enjoyed it, in a moka pot anyway
>>
>>22210871
The new breed of self-heating portable machines seem decent if a bit pricey. You can use hot water to make the battery last longer.
That said if you're really doing 3 cups a day it probably won't survive past a few years.
>>
>>22209948
So is it good for you or not?
>>
>>22211037
No, but I am good for it.
>>
>>22210895
Kinda not sure really. Doesn't even need to be that portable either. It's not like I'm gonna be making it in my car. Just something I can take when I visit people or move around. I'm looking at a Flair Go now too, but I'm getting confused.
>>22211020
I think I'll ditch this gayass idea and just stick to pour over. Or I can get a moka pot if I want something denser. Maybe I can make milk dirnks with moka coffee idk.
>>
>>22211066
>Maybe I can make milk dirnks with moka coffee idk.
I've been doing this for the past few years because I can't afford espresso and I kinda like it, not as bold as the real thing but it's fine.
>>
lately i just make an ese espresso with pressurized filter and add 200ml cold milk
its a step up from instant nescafe iced + cold milk
>>
>>22211069
>I can't afford espresso

Because of the cost of a good espresso machine?
>>
>>22211096
Yeah, grinder too
>>
>>22211066
Moka pot would be my rec for portable but still have stove access. Bellman CX25 is a moka pot with manual valve and a steam wand if you want to do milk stuff. It can make coffee considerably denser than moka pot, nearly espresso, and can also do less dense stuff. Has a good learning curve though. I am on the fence on the Bellman, great coffee and sometimes I really enjoy fiddling with it to see what I can get it to do, but I do miss the simplicity of a normal moka pot. I am getting the hang of it and learning its quirks, it is becoming less of a hassle.
>>
>>22211125
>Bellman CX25

I got excited for a second but that bitch is 200 bucks.
>>
>>22211037
yes but only paper filtered
>>
>>22211165
That is the CX25P, normal CX25 is like $140. The P has a pressure gauge, which probably would lesson the learning curve but I don't think it would be of any real use once you get past the first hump, you can tell the pressure fairly easily by ear and how the sound of the water boiling changes, it just takes some practice and some failure and a bunch of ok but not great cups of coffee.

re: skillet roasting. in the previous thread, anon mentioned preheating in his oven. can you elaborate on this? my assumption is that you preheated either the skillet itself or a sheet with beans on them. please advise (:

>>22212272

>>22212272

>>
>>22212272
Preheat the skillet, give it a good 10 minutes or so in the oven so it is well soaked, onto the burner mediumish heat depending on the quirks of your stove, beans go in and start stirring.

But I think starting the beans in the oven and finishing on the stove has some value, maybe preheat the pan in the oven, throw in the beans and turn the heat up to 400 or so, give it a few minutes or maybe even let it go until first crack is just starting, onto the hot burner and stir. Would give a bit more control than straight oven where you can't really see the beans or stir them.

Oven roasted can also do quite well, it takes a few tries to find the right spot in the oven that has the most even heat and maybe experimenting with the various bake settings your oven offers. I did some oven roasting and was able to get quite even results after some experimentation, not perfect but perfectly good and I think I might prefer a slightly uneven roast, it might not be the best for showing the nuances of a particular bean but it can produce very tasty coffee.

My advice for those starting out, pick a methodology and learn it inside and out. Buy 5 or 10 pounds of a single bean/blend and have at it. Sticking to a single bean and a single method means the goalposts don't move while learning and as as long as you take the time to understand your mistakes, the coffee and your method, you will learn and improve. Make coffee from them and experiment with making the coffee in different ways and try to figure out how to make a good cup or at least the best cup you can from a roast regardless of how poorly it turned out, figure out what is good about the batch and what is bad and how to bring out the good in your next batch, don't just write it off as good or bad. The coffee you make from your roast is never just a bad cup of coffee no matter how terrible it is.

The basics of roasting are fairly simple, if you put in the time to understand your heat source the rest is simple.
>>
>>22212345
Thanks for the tips. I roasted coffee for the better part of two years with one of Sweet Maria's poppers, but I've never roasted on a skillet before tonight. I couldn't preheat it in the oven because the handle was wooden (so I guess it's not a skillet proper--whatever) but had some success. Thanks anyway, I'm sure your write-up will help somebody. (:

as usual your problem can be solved by the engineering genius of glorious nippon. search for "Single-Serve Pour Over Disposable Filter Bag". they can be set on top of the cup. they are made to be filled with ground coffee and used as a disposable pourover, but they would probably work for your purpose as well.

I am new to this coffee brewing thing. I have bought myself a Moka Pot and I've heard that I have to grind my own for best results. Every youtuber barista says that I have to grind it coarser than for expresso and finer than for vg10. Is it required that I have to buy and master expresso machine and vg10 (whatever that is) before I can learn Moka Pot?

light roast

>>22217034
interesting, I've heard that you grind it coarse for cold brew. But maybe it doesn't apply to light roast.

Grinding your will give "best" results but starting out, just grind at the grocery store or have the coffee shop grind it for you, worry about a grinder if you start noticing the last cup of coffee from a bag tastes worse than the first cup.

Moka pots can make good coffee from a wide range of grinds, experiment.

Drinking coffee without sugar is a modern American fad originating from their futile attempts to keep their body weights under control.
Pro tip: it's not about what you eat (and drink) but about how much.
>>
>>22219402
Good coffee doesn't need sugar. Shitty coffee is undrinkable without it.
>>
>>22219402
>but about how much.
but what if I'm going to drink 7 cups of coffee because my american affluence allows me to do so? then surely you would not recommend each and every cup be sugared?
>>
>>22219409
Unsweetened coffee is only good to accompany some meals; it works like a spice there. Drinking it alone without sugar is a misunderstanding - compare dry wines (which are supposed to be drunk with meals) and dessert (sweet) wines which you may drink alone.
>>
>>22219410
Seven cups of strong coffee would kill you. If it's a weak coffee than only a little amount of sugar will suffice and that will not make you fat.

I personally can't stand the taste of sugar in coffee and have always drunk it black or with a little bit of cream. Coffee is already sweet enough so long as you aren't buying pod machine or grocery store trash, in which case enjoy your stale, moldy cardboard water. The only "fad" part of this is the growing public awareness that people have been drinking absolute swill for decades and that good tasting coffee exists without having to dump a bunch of shit into it. Get yourself a bag of honey processed Ethiopian beans and tell me that shit doesn't taste sweet as hell on its own.
