Late night I can't seem to fall asleep story time. It came up in the recent shelf thread after a bit of a side discussion about Roger Sterns Cap run and a Frank Miller issue that got moved to Marvel Fanfare.

Let's give it a read!

Incidentally this would not be the only story Stern would right about an arsonist. Cap 258 also has Steve going up against an arsonist but that's more about real estate plots and not some statement about the disenfranchised. It's a pretty fun story still.

And as I was saying in the other thread it's a real crying shame Stern didn't get a longer run on Cap. His stint was brief but I really liked his take on the character. I'd have loved to see what he could have done with more long term attachment. But there was a lot of bs behind the scenes, you can read it here

The short of it, is that Marvel paid you a bonus for having so many issues in a row at the time. Editors were being fags about deadlines and wanted to insert a fill in issue which would have cost Stern and Byrne their bonuses so they walked. Which sucked.

And the letters page. Because why not. All in all, a pretty good issue. Would read again. Is a shame this didn't get to be part of the main run of the book and Stern got screwed costing us what could have been a fantastic run. I mean we got Dematiess and Zeck pretty soon after so it's still pretty good comics and then after them was the Gruenwald run. But you know still right? Would have been cool to see. Also man when you get into it Cap had a lot of really good runs didn't he.

Well hope you had fun reading.

It's been a nightmare for a lot of people throughout its history ever since its creation, but it can be argued that, aside from a lot of missteps, it's gotten better in general, and still has the capacity to do a lot better. The overall message from Captain America is that while things look like shit, and have been shit, it doesn't mean it always has to be shit.

It is a lot a talk and it can come off as empty when people are at their lowest point with no hope in sight, but he's a fucking comic book character, all it can offer is a bit of optimism to the reader.

That's how life works, we try to make things better for the succeeding generation and try not to fuck things up along the way. At least, that's what we're supposed to do.
>>143311646
I can understand being super pissed at the guy for being a domestic terrorist and murdering people, but beating the shit out of him in front of his family is still kind of a bad look for Cap.

Marvel has been conscious of the fact that their new characters weren't catching on for a long time. Aside from the various mutant titles and The Punisher (and briefly She-Hulk during the Byrne era), totally new series at Marvel have not really sold for shit over the last 40 years or so. Moon Knight was one of the last outside of the examples mentioned above to have an even decent selling new series. So whenever something new came along that editorial/management were convinced had potential they would stubbornly push the FUCK out of it.
>>
>>143311776

My read was Cap was so focused on getting him he didn't realize the rest of the family was there until they hit him

That's a hell of a detail to miss considering he BnE'd the guy's home while they were sitting down for a meal, unless his justice boner was so hard that it literally blinded him to everybody else in the room.
>>
>>143314101
It all happened pretty fast.
>>
>>143314139
The man dodges and deflects bullets, he totally had to have noticed them, it's just a weird detail that he charges into the apartment like a bull, stops a knife attack, slams the guy on his ass, then somehow missed the kid and mother sitting at the same table. I get they were trying to drum up drama by having him realize it was the same family he saw earlier, but that was just a strange sequence overall.
>>
>>143314251
It's a comic, anon. Cap's still a human at the end of the day and it's easy for him to get caught up in hot emotions.
>>
>>143314292
Still dumb, I could understand if the kid and mother were in another room and they respond to the commotion going on and see the guy getting destroyed and Cap ends up being surprised that it's the same family, but Cap running in there like some cop hopped up on piss and vinegar while simultaneously ignoring and scaring the fuck out of the man's family like he's on super crack from Street of Poison arc just seems off.

Marvel really should be putting out more Fanfares, two in ones and team up books honestly. It's a great platform for showcasing talent and character. Just take your presently most popular character and team em up with whomever you're looking to push that month or give a nice one shot that doesn't require too much investment to get readers hooked.

Skinny women with no hips or ass was seen as the ideal body type at the time, at least among whites, I'm sure blacks and central and south Americans still loved big hips and butts. I only know this by watching old shows or movies from the time where they whined about having a figure of any kind that was larger than toothpick thin.
