Let's talk about Barney the Dinosaur.

Okay, let's get real for a moment. Barney was a staple of many childhoods, but for some reason, there's a segment of people who find him... well, let's just say, less than lovable.

So here's the question: Why is Barney so divisive?

Is it those big, googly eyes that seem to follow you everywhere? Or maybe it's his perpetual cheerfulness that some find a tad unsettling? And let's not forget that saccharine-sweet voice that could make your teeth ache from across the room. So, what's your take? Why do you think Barney the Dinosaur gets such a bad rap? Let's discuss!

It was the only thing on at the time for a lot of kids back then because corporate had a monopoly on media. People hated it because it was fucking gay and being pushed EVERYWHERE. Millennials don't understand how badly they've been brainwashed.

It was really gay. More so than usual for kids programming. It also didn't teach kids anything except how to be really naive, again moreso than usual.

Barney is trash and was always trash. Kids never actually liked it. The only people who watched it are kids whose parents used the television as a babysitting tool.

>>
>>143327130
He’s supposed to be a dragon. You can sometimes see that he has a little tail. They just didn’t try very hard to make him look like a dragon. Him being a dragon is the non-drug explanation for why his name was “Pufnstuf,” like puffing as in breathing fire.

Unlike milk, corn didn’t really get promoted in the US with big flashy ad campaigns, they just put corn-based additives into a lot of foods and it just took us a while to care because corn is a vegetable so it must be fine, right?

I would have called bullshit on this years ago but now I have come to realize there are a subset of people who are so bland and vanilla, something like Sesame Street and especially its setting would actually offend those same soccermoms. The Olsen Twins were also tailored for safe suburban families too.

Why do people hate Barney so much? It's an innocent show

Kids hated him because he was "for babies." Millions of kids grew up in an environment where hating Barney was basically the first and earliest possible chance to project maturity.

He also talks really slow and dumb and thus wears down your patience kind of like someone with a severe mental defect. The way he's always 100% nice and saccharine also subconsciously feels like he's either fake or hiding something.

That documenatry's wild

>VA actually seems like a chill guy who voices mainly body puppets and costume characters like Barney and Chuck E Cheese

>Got death threats on the internet in the 90s

>A lot of the child actors on the show were picked on at school when they got off it and some turned to alcohol

>One kid in particular straight up went full street, got shot, survived, and became a born again Christian

>Creator was kind of shitty to her son about the show's success, Barney took over her life so much that her son felt neglected and envious of Barney

>Eventually the son goes crazy and gets arrested for shooting a neighbor as an adult

Barney sucks but it's over hated but some of the hate was/is pretty funny (i particularly recall some anti barney zzt games) obviously wasn't appropriate to threaten the real life people involved in the show.

thinking back on it the lack of a regular adult human character was one of its biggest problems. Imagine Lamb Chop's Play Along sans Shari Lewis; The Elephant Show without Sharon, Louis, and Bram. They'd still be better than Barney but eeesh!

I decided to watch some Barney out of morbid curiosity a couple of years ago, and my main issue was that they were padding the episodes out by having Barney and the kids randomly sing public domain songs that had nothing to do with the main point the episode was trying to tell.

It felt cheap and sloppy. Like you can’t come up with an original song to keep things more focused? You’ll just do whatever to fill out the runtime?

I watched it at one point out of morbid curiosity too and the thing that threw me off was that some of the child actors looked waaaay too old to be on this show. I get that they probably wanted some older kids to be role models for the target demographic but it gets really distracting to see what sometimes looks like 11-12 year old kids singing Row Row Row your boat or Pop Goes the Weasel.
>>
>>143334028
younger siblings exist, anon.
>>
>>143334656
Probably also easier to direct kids that are well out of the show’s target demographic. But yeah, it’s weird how the kids in the show are clearly acting young for their age to fit on a show for preschoolers.

There’s also a ton of kid characters to keep track of, these kids can only act so well, and an entire episode’s main plot can be built around them learning a lesson or achieving a goal.
>>
>>143328811
You forgot >the actor inside the Barney suit is now a Tantric sex instructor
>>
>>143328811
The creator's first husband became depressed because he was no longer the breadwinner for the family and committed suicide. Their son became a drug addict, suffered extreme paranoia and went to jail for several years for shooting his neighbor for walking in front of his house. The son got out of jail early because his mother threw large amounts of money at the state governor and got the son's sentence reduced. The creator also unsuccessfully tried to sue several people who made Barney parodies and ended up looking like a bully with no sense of humor. In at least one of those cases, (the chicken mascot guy who fought a guy in a Barney outfit at a baseball game), she ended up losing the case and also ended up having to pay the legal fees for the person she was trying to sue.
>>
>>143334712
The kids also have like no personality and maybe like one character trait at best but that's probably because they're meant to be blank safe self insert everymen
>>
>>143334712
A lot of them were the children of friends of the creator's family and didn't have a lot of acting experience.
>>
>>143334876
Yeah, it’s hard to say what’s bland on purpose in Barney and what’s a constraint of the budget or the creators’ vision.

>>143335228
That explains a lot.

I guess the way Barney was made didn’t change that much between its independent, amateur roots and becoming a PBS show.
>>
>>143334712
I was a pretty big Barney fan when I was in preschool and I never once paid attention to the kids. They're only there so it's easier to imagine you're there with Barney.
>>
>>143324644
>So here's the question: Why is Barney so divisive?
Because he's always happy, always confident, and always in control. He doesn't have sadness, doubt, or other negative emotions. He's inhuman.
>>
>>143335289
In all fairness, the creators of the show made it very clear in interviews that they weren't trying to make some deep multi-layered show that parents could get themselves absorbed into like what's happening with Bluey nowadays.

The Barney crew have explicitly stated that they were aiming squarely for toddlers and preschoolers ONLY. This was an intentional decision on their part, as they felt it allowed them to fully capture the young viewers' attention with elements that only appealed to them. That's why there's all this stuff that makes no sense to adult viewers, such as all the padding with all the songs, repeated numerous times over the show, the show's persistently happy tone and essentially zero conflict, because their studies had shown that's what worked the best for their 2-4 year-old target audience. It is a deliberately simple show for the barely-developed brains of their VERY young audience, in a time where something like that didn't exist, and it became popular among that target audience because of that.
>>
>>143335376
This was an enlightening post. Thank you for explaining this.

It’s nice to think that the creators of Barney knew what they were doing, and that Barney has value even though I can’t appreciate it. That’s how I would rather it be.

They touched on this in the documentary. Barney is always blandly positive and upbeat. Contrast this with other PBS characters like the ones from Sesame Street who have flaws, who sometimes lose their tempers or make mistakes or have conflicts with their friends. Toddlers find it comforting but older kids and adults find Barney to be alien and offputting.

Most preschool shows had a certain level of charm to them, and most importantly didn't treat their audiance like absolute retards. Shows like Sesame Street are still well liked because they understood that kids do have feelings and can understand complex emotions and concepts. They also realized that adults watch the shows too, or will HAVE to watch the show so they tried their best to do some actual writing, jokes and make things not as anoying.

Barney on the other hand was so fucking shallow and corperate that they did not give a shit. Everyone is so fucking anoying, it doesn't really teach lessons and it talks to it's audiance like they are retarded. The show just feels like it was ment to brainwash kids in to buying merch and home VHS tapes rather than to teach and actual lesson.

And since it was so cute, loveable and safe it was also the perfect target for kids to rebel against and be bait for open mic night tier edgy jokes.
