Delusional.
>>
>>143332362
I never said it was bad, I said this is better.
This has better pacing, a more original premise, and better art (Bagley peaked in the 90s)
>>
>>143332362
Without nostalgia goggles on, Bendis' Ultimate Spider-Man is absolute mediocrity.
Something like Alias should be considered putrid shit though and absolutely deserves it.
>>
>>143332362
nta, but I'm convinced the original Ultimate run is so widely loved only because a lot of people read it when they were young. I came into comics later in life and when I tried to read it, I was instantly hit in the face with Bendis' atrocious dialogue that aged the series worse than stuff from written in the 60s. Wasn't a fan of the characterizations as well.

>>143332191
>>143332196
This is the ugliest borefest I've read since Miss Holy Menstruation
>>
>>143332362
The success of Bendis's USM swung the pendulum too far in the perpetually young loser Spider-Man direction. OMD/BND was trying to follow up on that trend.

Likewise this book is going in the other direction of a more mature Spider-Man that the readers have missed. And hopefully the main book tries to go more in that direction again.
>>
>>143332394
>characterizations
I think villains were hit with this the worst. I dunno how you make Spider-Man's rogue gallery so boring, but Bendis managed.
>>
>>143332144

No cornrows, not reading this shit. sage
>>
>>143332406
>OMD/BND was trying to follow up on that trend.
NTA, but that had nothing to with Ultimate. That had to do with the whackjob editorial that had been trying to get rid of the marriage and deage Peter for decades.
>>
>>143332362
Bendis' run suffers from too much decompression and his ability being lacking if he doesn't have other stories to copy.
Like it was great at the start, but then we get to shit like cancer-venom, gwen-carnage... other stuff. Honestly I don't remember most of 1610.
>>
>>143332394
>I'm convinced the original Ultimate run is so widely loved only because a lot of people read it when they were young
I feel like I soured on it more after reading ASM from the start. I started with USM and had a decent enough time until Ultimatum when it became shit. Then I went back and read ASM from the start and I realised that USM just does a lot of the same things but worse, and by god were all of the villain redesigns terrible
>>
>>143332355
>Cements it as being Peter's title
they really went out of their way to remove the only adjective and title that Miles could've had kek
>>
>>143332431
Bendis is Pro-Marriage
But anti bendis fags keeps mentioning Superman, when he wanted to undo Jon's Aging and send him to the Legion, until DC Sabotaged him because tranny mags plan was discovered and they went plan By by putting Jon and Tim Drake to be faggots.
>>

>>
>>143332475
I know Bendis is pro-marriage, he's the one that put "one true love Mary Jane Watson" in Ultimate. That has literally nothing to do with anything I said.
>>
>>143332352
They gave that vibe in this issue. Well MJ, Gwen and Harry do.
>>
>>143332362
New reader here. How did Bendis have Marvel in such a chokehold in the 2000s ?
>>
>>143332404
>can’t handle adults talking
You’re a child, aren’t you
>>
I know this could come up in the next issue, which seems to be more Harry-centric, but it's interesting that he mentions his father several times (as does Gwen and I think either Peter or MJ in #1), but never his mother. Might be reading too much into this, but I guess we'll see in a month.
>>
>>143332463
Not just redesigns.
When Bendis wasn't copying what was done better by better writers, he had two types of villains
>generic stock loser character to easily beat up
>rampaging psycho shouting nonsense with little personality otherwise
Sometimes they overlapped
>>
God it feels good for Peter Parker to be involved in an issue of Spider-Man again.
>>
>>143332259
>i'm just a guy in a suit
possible goblin serum foreshadowing? And that's what will make him crazy and go super villain mode.

>>143332156

REMEMBER WHEN MJ BECAME THE ULTIMATE UNIVERSE DEMOGOBLIN DURING THE CLONE SAGA?

Lmao, all this talk just reminded me.
I started reading USM somewhere with X-Men crossover (yeah, the arc with Geldoff. Fuck my life. At least I got to masturbate to MJ in leather outfit and X-girls as a consolation for this boring-ass story) and then playing the videogame, so my introduction to some of the characters was the game.
Speaking of, Rhino. He was genuinely intimidating in the vidya, I thought that version of Rhino is awesome.
So when I got to read the earlier arcs, imagine my disappointment that he got beaten by Iron Man off-screen in his only appearance up until that point. (Later he was used in a throwaway villain defeated in a couple of pages in one of the Annuals, I believe and that was all we saw of him.)
>>
>>143332752
Remember when Beetle kidnapped Venom? In a shitty story badly adapting the much better videogame, yes I'm still mad.
Remember Moon Knight developing a psychotic and more ruthless and violent Ronin personality and how absolutely nothing was done with it after the initial arc?
Remember Ultimate Scorpion? The clone, not the Double Dragon boss reject.

>>
>>143332553
He was popular and Ultimate Spider-man was pretty good and a nice way for new readers to get into comics (it's how I got into them + spider-man). The real annoying parts of his writing didn't start to show themselves yet and most of us were even willing to give Miles a chance because Peter's 'death' was a really good and emotional thing.

Miles quickly proved to be boring as shit and very dull though and when you stop and relook at the whole book there's a ton of writing flaws and creepy moments.
>>
>>143334213
good characters are the not the only thing which keeps a book afloat they also require action in them fail to deliver that in a marvel or DC book and pretty soon it will fail and get cancelled.
>>
>>143332263
Harry, nooooo. You said the forbidden words. Any Spider-Man character that utters that phrase gets the death penalty. You've sentenced yourself to the grave, you poor fool.
>>
The problem is that the book isn't weekly so slow starts are really slow and kinda boring. Like we know that Harry is going to go bad at some point, we know that Peter isn't going to tell MJ until something big happens, we know that JJJ is going to spin spider-man as a bad guy and we know there's a damn good chance that Ben is dying at some point
>>
>>143334269
Didn't it have action last comic? Are readers so pathetic that they need punching and explosions every book or they'll jump ship?
>>
>>143334294
I'm ok with slow starts but Hickman's obsession with tying into his bigger Maker narrative could end up harming the book. I want some low stakes encounter, like he had with the Shocker, or just Spidey meeting his own version of his rogues. If we're only gonna go building up towards The Maker and The Council it won't really fulfill the "need for Spidey antics" that people have.
>>
>>143334294
>Like we know that Harry is going to go bad at some point

We don't actually. I can see Hickman flipping that on its head for sure.
>>
>>143334329
same
issue 7 seems to be setting up this universe's Otto, i hope there's more on the way.
>>
>>143334294
I mean, do we?
Why would you expect this nuUltimate to end up going the exact same way as main continuity? That would be the worst possible storytelling choice. Even the original Ultimate Universe never did that.
Also, specifically with Harry, judging from the most recent solicits, it seems that Hickman's going to have him and Peter working together as heroes for the foreseeable future.
>>143334329
Hopefully there'll be more day-to-day Spidey moments in future issues. I think the thing to remember is that we're still in the opening arc right now. The Shocker parts in #2 and 3 were good, and I agree on wanting to see more like that

>>
>>143334645
>uhhh actually I love my spider-man comics when they're just yapping. FUCK seeing him actually do Spider-man shit!
I get it. We're all happy that we're having Peter and MJ stuff but a little action to help with the pacing, even just some flashes to Peter fighting random street guys as he muses on some stuff, would go wonders.
>>
The bigger issue with the lack of action is that the comic is moving in real time. So it's been a month since the last issue. And it's been 4 months since he was bitten. I think the issues need to be a bit more diverse in general but not this issue. This issue was perfect as is.
>>
>>143334659
Maybe a few, I guess, but I think there aren't enough secondaries to convince Hickman to change his gears which would be the real issue

Ultimate Spider-Man launched at a time when people didn't like the main Spider-Man titles, which were still under the lingering effects of the Byrne/Mackie era despite efforts to fix it (you can see Mackie's kind of improve post-Byrne and Jenkins doing Peter Parker: Spider-Man also was an improvement, but the elephant in the room was that Mary Jane was still "dead" at the time and some Byrne changes were still in place like Sandman's return to villainy, though it looked like Jenkins was moving toward that till Zeb Wells fucked it up back in the 00s)

At the time Bendis' style of writing was also new and novel partly because it was a major contrast against Byrne's Spider-Man: Chapter One, and actually brought in new readers. Since Quesada was the one who brought Bendis in he also gained from that as well. Bendis was later allowed to do stuff like a Daredevil run and Alias (which launched the MAX line).

Then when Avengers was doing poorly because Chuck Austen was on it, there was discussions on what directions to take Avengers. Mark Millar suggested that the Avengers be more like the JLA and have its most popular characters on it. Bendis was probably the only one supporting Millar's idea, so he got the job writing Avengers, leading to Disassembled and New Avengers, which somehow sold well during the 00s.

With the success of USM and Avengers under his belt and likely being part of Quesada's in-crowd, that might've been how he got to be on the Marvel Creative Committee and calling shots for more than just the comics, for years

Hi Slott
>>
>>143335235
I liked his Dark Avengers, but I sometimes wonder if Benis was just very lucky that Warren Ellis had pretty much done all the dirty work in characterizing Stormin' Norman in Thunderbolts and all he had to do was mimic that for the actual Dark Avengers series.

I honestly think his run was carried by a lot of things

Honestly surprised they had the line said verbatim (although it is the Raimi version), these days it’s like they can’t straight up say it as if they are ashamed of it being too tongue and cheek, so they pull their old grammar book to look for the most synonymous words they can find to lay a variation of the phrase.

Yeah it gives off rush job vibes. The colors somewhat hide it but a closer look makes it more obvious: repeated use of the 9 panel grid format and a bunch of talking heads that are either repeated or slightly modified (seriously look how often that low angle shot of Harry shows up). The eating shots seem to be heavily referenced in a way that clashes. Seems there could have been more polish to make the style more consistent throughout. Nothing wrong with using references and shortcuts but all these little issues add up and make me wonder if the artist didn't have enough time or if something else happened in the process like communication failure between the writer and artist.

I think you need to re-watch "Fire Made Flesh" and "Remember It" at any rate allow me to reminder you about a few things. First of all we don't know when the switch between Maddie and Jean took place thus scott does not know if he married jean's clone or jean herself. Granted he and maddie did share a psychic rapport and jean did lasher out at scott one she found about it, but scott said he he's been checking in on for maddie for the past month and when jean asked if he loves her at all he says he loves her and maddie.

Therefore scott was conflicted between maddie and jean the thing to keep in mind is that jean, scott and maddie are all victims of Sinister since they were all manipulated by him. Thus scott's emotions/behaviour is actually understandable and forgivable all things all considered, at any rate he and maddie did NOT have sex but simply shared a a psychic rapport wit each other.

And this brings us to OMD and my point when mephisto offered peter the deal peter HAD a choice he did NOT have to accept the deal since he did have a choice and yet he did accept the deal. Thus peter destroyed/undid his marraige and his life since he did accept the deal. From my point of view peter's behaviour/choice is unforgivable since his choice was selfish and since he did have a choice in the matter.

But Scott's, maddie.and jean's behaviour on the other hand is Understandable since they were all victims of sinster manipulated by him and therefore they had no control over what happened to them.
>>
>>143347397
It's a similar thing when it comes to the comics remember the recton of the the phoenix saga. Here we found out that the Phoenix Force duplicated jean's body and became her since it believed to be jean. While the real Jean was at the bottom Jamaica Bay, in a cocoon healing herself.

This the part which makes me pround of jean Upon its suicide by way of a disintegration ray, the Phoenix Force dispersed into its original form and a fragment located the still-healing Jean at the bottom of Jamaica Bay. In trying to bond with her, Jean sensed its memories of death and destruction as Dark Phoenix and reject, it. So basically jean told the Phoenix Force to fuck off when it tried to bond with her.

Now did Peter Parker tell Mephisto to fuck off when he offered him the deal no he did not and this is why I like X-Men better then Spider-Man.

Again jean, scott and maddie actions are all understandable since they were all manipulated by Sinister. But peter's choice regarding his marraiage when it comes to his deal with Mephisto is NOT Understandable or forgivable at all so quite frankely fuck Peter Parker, And ALL hail X-Men for all time.
>>
>>143344176
Or maybe that's what are fans are supposed to think still the day may just arrive in which we find out the jackal did clone MJ yes Marvel is that stupid enough to make it canon.
>>
>>143347397
>scott said he he's been checking in on for maddie for the past month and when jean asked if he loves her at all he says he loves her and maddie.

Your argument is that nobody in X-Men has any agency because of Mr. Sinister, but also everyone in Spider-Man has agency even though Mephisto, who is much more powerful than Sinister, is also manipulating people. That’s pretty contradictory and doesn’t change the fact that Scott comes off as a noncommittal deadbeat and that Jean is clone-racist. Also Maddie shouldn’t have spent years trying to molest Nathan Gray.

The only good thing to come of this debacle is Cable, who is canonically a Spider-Man fan himself, which is very based. Mistakes into miracles. Peter would be a great father figure for Nathan if Spider-Man ‘98 happens though. MC2 Peter and HickUlt Peter are both way better dads than Cyclops ever was.

>>
>>143348469
Honestly, there’s a lot of overlap Spider-Man and X-Men could have. I always found it weird that Miles Warren was a better geneticist than Mr. Sinister, and honestly I’d like a Spider-Man ‘98 plot where Sinister is the guy behind Clone Saga, and this is some sort of batshit scheme for an eventual Parker/Summers hybrid.

Peter demands to know what Essex’s batshit obsession with him is, and he responds with “NATHAN WAS YOUR BIGGEST FAN AS A BOY!!!” as if that somehow explains everything.
>>
>>143348526
That would be pretty great actually
>>
>>143349032
I just love extrapolating from Cable’s line about Peter being “the greatest of them all” when Peter was mentoring Hope in the comics, and I just really fell in love with the idea of someone as deadly serious as Cable being a big fan of Spider-Man.

Do something like Secret Wars II for Spider-Man 98, bring in the X-Men and Cable against Apocalypse. He just butts heads with everyone who doesn’t want to follow Peter’s lead on this.

Cable: "You show this man some goddamn respect, Captain 'America' or whoever you are. I never even heard of that country."
Spider-Man: "Cable... it's okay."
Cable: "Yes sir. Sorry sir."
Spider-Man: *sighs*

Cable: "You came back for me?"
Peter: "You kept talking me up as the best hero of all time. I... I couldn't let you down."
Cable: "Thank you. I know it's... it's hard to live up to a myth. But you did, back there. You made a boyhood dream come true."
>>

Norman Osborn and peter were both offered deals by mephisto which they both could have rejected. You may argue that MJ influenced peter's decision but in the end whatever way you cut it that does not change the fact that the
decision ultimately belonged to Peter.

Mr. Sinister on the hand has always manipulated mutants by various schemes of his own making he does not offer deals like mephisto does there lies the difference.

And as for jean kissing Logan in "Remember It that is also forgivable, since jean's emotions got the better of her most likely due to her memories being messed up because of Sinster.

Krakoa was literally built on the back of a deal with Sinister
>>
>>143349675
And they’d let Apocalypse into the club, which I personally was even less enthused about.
>>
>>143349576
My argument is that even if Scott, Jean, and Maddy were dealt bad hands, they still had agency and could decide how they would react to it. They reacted poorly.

It’s understandable, but I think Mr. Great Responsibility could have sorted through it all much better, as long as he isn’t written by a BND moron.

MC2 Peter would’ve come around on April Parker sooner or later, for example, like he did for his own clones.

This. It’s better than the gay looking goatee he had in MC2, and I still loved MC2.

Sorry X-Fags, but it looks like even a dinner date issue focused solely on characterization and world building, over action is overtaking X-Men’s best efforts.

Between this and all the rumors swirling around about Christopher Daniel Barnes in X-Men 97, it looks like your spotlight is getting snatched and your thunder is getting stolen. Maybe Peter will be generous, and allow his biggest fan Cable to team up with him when they do Secret Wars II for Spider-Man 98.

Too bad Brevoort wants to bury the Krakoa Era. Meanwhile the guy who started the Krakoa Era in the first place now belongs to the Spider-Fags.

Is this how the end of the JMS era felt for Spider-Fags? Just one of the best runs in a while, suddenly collapsing into BND mediocrity???

>>143352570
Yeah man. We were on top of the world. JMS was on Amazing, Bendis was on Ultimate, Spider-Man 3 was coming out, we had the Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon…

And then, slowly but surely, it all went to hell.
>>
>>143352644
>implying Harry and Gwen aren’t trying to corrupt Peter and MJ into a polycule.
>>
>>143352715
Lets be honest, after 500 JMS had a fairly mediocre run
>>
>>143352814
JMS had its ups and downs (fucking Morlun) but it was the last time you could say you were following Spider-Man without feeling embarrassed
>>
>>143352902
I actually really like morlun and the discussion of petes relationship to spiders in general. The 90s was VERY science heavy so the pivot into something a bit more mystical was nice, they just needed to have him fold in puma or black panther to at least let pete discuss his feelings about suddenly realizing he’s an avatar for an animal. But I liked the bulk of his run and LOVE the story for the 500th issue. But you’re right that JMS was the last time Pete was a character dealing with the ramifications of his own stories, and not just a business decision made by worse and worse artists
>>
>>143352968
I didn't mind the mysticism aspect, Madame Web's been around forever, I just hate Morlun as a character
>>
>>143352990
I feel you, I mostly just focus on enjoying his first story. I hate that he was brought back and hate the spiderverse shit even more. Though supposedly he was used well in a black panther story from over a decade ago
>>
>>143352968
I feel like Morlun worked best as a mysterious vampire who preyed on animal-themed superheroes. The less we knew, the more interesting he was.

So of course, Slott gave this dude an entire fucking multiversal mythos of the lamest shit imaginable, exclusively revolving around Spider People when really it was implied that anyone was fine.
>>
>>143353110
The explanation of him just being “the ultimate predator” was all he ever needed, he was just a reaction to humans gaining powers through connections with animals. Bam, simple don’t need to expound on it more. This whole “Victorian vampire multiversal family eating spider people” just seems so sad and reductive to everything involved honestly
>>
>>143352902
Shatra>morlun
>>
>>143353205
He was only Victorian because JMS knows that it’s a look that screams vampire. He even had his own Renfield. He was a vampire that preyed upon superhumans.

Then, because of the unmitigated hackery of it all, Morlun’s shit became steampunk too, because Victorian=Steampunk for all unoriginal geeks.
>>
>>143353356
Shathra was hotter with a cooler design but morlun was a better villain and character. Shathra is where this whole “hunting people with connections to animals” got dropped and it JUST focuses on spiders

It’s a boring, slow drawn out issue that barely adds anything that couldn’t have been achieved quicker in half the time. It’s also pretty easy ill-conceived to do such a padded date night story at issue four when you’ve barely gotten your storyline started.

If this wasn’t Hickman book where people are blindsided by hype and their enormous and perpetual butthurt over Amazing Spider-man people would be far more likely complain about this being largely filler.
>>
>>143359960
I like worldbuilding and characterization.
>>
>>143360515
It’s barebones world building.
>>
>>143360521
It's showing instead of telling, and largely focused around Peter's life and the things in it rather than a holistic summary.

Main thing is establishing comparisons and contrasts between Peter/MJ and Harry/Gwen.
>>
>>143360537
And it’s done in a completely dry and decompressed way that could have been done way better than them just sitting at a dinner for majority of the issue. It’s also rather weird that Hickman already wants you to make comparisons with the two couples when you barely have MJ and Peter get any focus as a couple outside of they being parents. Even Harry’s intro is so rushed through that it’s utterly bizarre you’re already doing couples dinner with them together.

To be fair, it’s technically 1610 with alternations due to time travel shenanigans. There’s like 3 or 4 series leading up to Ultimate Spider-Man.
>>
>>143363280
It isn't 1610 though. It's a completely separate universe that The Maker altered. He didn't go into 1610's past and change history, he went into 6160's past.
>>
>>143363280
It's not 1610, it's 6160. Peter Parker was almost bitten by a radioactive spider while with his friend Liz Allen. The only thing Maker altered was grabbing the spider.

>sensational action
>mundane problems
>relationship with the cast of wide normal characters and fantastical characters
So like Peter's whole shtick is he's a normal joe living a normal life. Even if his wife may be a model or an actor she's not exactly making massive profit. So they incur stuff like "oh no I need to pay something how am I ever gonna get this money on time" This was even at the very beginning with Peter needing money for his Aunt May and their falling behind on various bills. Be it for medical emergencies, expenses or rent Peter has a mundane problem he has to solve.
What's 6160 Peter's mundane problem? His wife is pretty much taking care of everything and he's more or less a house husband with some side hustle. His kids love him, his wife loves him. His apartment is upper class as fuck. They could have him work for the paper and struggle with Ben, Jonah and such to keep it afloat and hopefully that's the angle for the mundane problems to arise of trying to create a thriving business while also honoring the obligations of being Spider-Man.
That's kinda another thing we havent really seen. Peter constantly runs into time management issues since he's both Spider-Man and Peter Parker, he cant be in two places at once despite people expecting him to be there for them sometimes he sacrifices it in order to do Spider-Man shit. Even if its something as silly as Peter Parker is worried he'll miss his kids dance recital. It adds an additional tension that even if Peter can do something he's worried he might not be able to be there for his loved ones when they need him, that's why Peter has these relationships because they ground Spider-Man in a comfortable middle ground between the web-slinging and the soap opera elements.

Is “cope” the universal word for crybaby?
>>

Exactly it not being canon means it does not matter.
>>
>>143366933
No, it's the universal codeword for Gwen got Gobbed is canon.
>>
>>143366956
Sins past is non-canon in fact it was never canon to begin with given that spider-man blue came before sins past.

Now the way this issue is structured if you wanted to make it feel more like a Spider-Man comic from the classic era, I'd probably do it like this.
>the ladies excuse themselves
>Peter and Harry have themselves a time to talk to themselves when suddenly Harry's crime alert do hickey alerts him to bad guy activity!
>they grin at each other and quickly rush off to stop a bad guy
>still discussing the issues of having a secret identity that Peter's wife may not know about as they suit up
>they put the hurt on whoever caused the alert
>Harry drops the Great Power, Great Responsibility Shtick with them having now worked together and seeing each other in action
>they slide back in just in time as MJ and Gwen were wondering where they had gone
>continue as normal with the end of the issue
It keeps the same ideas but also reinforces them that Peter must act both in the best interests of his world but also his family with Harry being like "if youre putting yourself in danger you need your family to know about this, this is important man"
This also keeps in in spirit with old Spider-Man comics, Spider-Man and Peter Parker both need a presence as the responsibilities and guilt of Peter Parker linger on Spider-Man while the burdens that Spider-Man brings weigh on Peter.

They've got the mundane characters worked out great but the more fantastical side is lacking
for super individuals.
See in the first five issues of Spider-Man 6160 we have
>Spider-Man
>Tony
>Goblin
>Shocker
>with Otto showing up in issue five
While in the first issues of Spider-Man Spider-Man meets
>The Fantastic Four thus grounding him in the Marvel comics setting
>Chameleon
>Vulture
>Tinkerer
>Johnny Storm showing up again to establish continuity with the wider universe and show things are happening even without Spider-Man
>Doc Ock
>Sandman
>Doctor Doom to reinforce the wider comic setting
The way this comic is structured it goes for a slower build up but Spider-Man is more like a roller coaster.
Have you ever ridden the Mummy at Universal Studios? The way the Mummy works is first with a pre-show to establish the plot and set up the attraction and setting. It then has the ride start with several show scenes in a faux dark ride style with special effects with Imhotep the main antagonist menacing the guests before launching them into a roller coaster portion followed up by another show scene fake out for the exit of the ride followed by a brief roller coaster portion before the ride truly ends

In the same way Spider-Man is structured so to speak
>Peter Parker establishes what happened previously and explains his current problems with the set dressing being both the mundane and supernatural elements along with his relationship to others
>his life is then interrupted by the appearance of a supervillain who threatens to end Spider-Man once and for all as the webhead is forced to battle a new or old foe in a battle
>this is then resolved and Spider-Man returns into mundanity with the problem solved
>then at the end comes the promise of the villain who may not be vanquished after all or a new foe for Spider-Man to battle while he goes on with his personal issues

...Otto's weight gives his design character and fights against same face syndrome. Why do artists keep making him look fucking boring?

Spider-Man needs to have both self contained elements but also a wider narrative to keep people coming back for Spider-Man. This comic leans a little too hard into the elements of wider narrative without remembering you have to have Spider-Man go on adventures every month as well rather than a sort of timelessness that w hen you can pick of a good Spider-Man comic and have a general feel of the character even if the circumstances and context around whats going on is new. Jim Shooter recognized this even if the exposition is clunky. Every comic might be somebody's first comic. So you want each one to be great introductions to the adventures of Peter Parker and Spider-Man allowing to to get a great scope of what goes on in Spider-Man's life.
