My mom and dad were watching reruns of that show the other night, and Sanford and Son.

Ranada Shepard gets real defensive anytime someone criticizes the show, but she wasn't the one who initially pitched an edgy Good Times cartoon. Doesn't excuse the end result, but she was working with whatever Norman Lear and/or Seth MacFarlane threw her way. I wanna know what THEIR vision was and why the first showrunner left.

What does this show have to do with Good Times? You could have called it anything without changing the content of the show. Why drag that IP into this?
>>
>People pitch the show they want to make, get approved "but only if you make it using an IP we have a license to"
>>
>>143360459
This is what people think happens. "The creators pitch the show, and the studio says it can get made but has to have a name change."
You're wrong. Source: interviews with crew that worked on similar "it's kinda a reboot? Reimagining?" shows.
What actually happens:
The IP owner asks people to pitch takes on the IP.
People show up and go "here's my idea."
Now maybe some of those ideas ARE things they were already thinking about and they're just willing to file the name off. Maybe. But it's just as likely that they're legitimately the result of writers/artists going "huh, Good Times? Yeah, I kinda know about that. Well here's what I would do..."
>>
>>143360456
They could have called it The Cleveland Show.
>>
As likely the only one in this thread who actually watched it:

This is Family Guy with an N-Word pass. Seth MacFarlane's name is the only one that matters, because he's the only one who had any visible input on the product. Also I liked about the N-Word Pass, they censor it even though they don't censor "fuck" earlier.

>Seth MacFarlane's name is the only one that matters, because he's the only one who had any visible input on the product.
I wouldn't be so sure about that. Seth wasn't a credited writer for any of the episodes, plus he has a history of slapping his name onto projects he otherwise had no part in creatively, only financially. Remember Dads?

It's not clear what role he played in the show (and with all that backlash, he probably won't ever acknowledge it), but I don't think he had much to do with the final product. I do, however, wonder if he's the main reason this shit went into development in the first place. What was his relationship like with Norman Lear? 'Cause I am confident it wasn't Steph's idea to make a Good Times cartoon.
>>
>>143361019
That's the fucked thing: there ARE NO CREDITED WRITERS. Look at IMDB. Nothing. There's writer's assistants that's it. Nobody wants to admit they wrote this shit.
And all writers do is write the script. They don't come up with the concept. They aren't the creators. The writers didn't decide that the family had to be a stupid dad, hot mom, rebellious daughter, stupid son, and evil baby.

You really shouldn't be so reliant on IMDb, my dude. But I just checked, and the writers ARE credited, both on that site and in the actual episodes. Ranada Shepard developed this show after Carl Jones walked away early on, and she's been VERY proud about it throughout all this controversy. Her, Cree Summer, and the mom's VA. There were even a couple other writers who defended and promoted the show. None of them are ashamed.
>>

Yeah. "How do we bring back this IP?" is usually the first question asked, and it sucks that Hollywood almost exclusively works this way now. There are probably tons of writers and artists who'd love to pitch an original African cartoon sitcom--or maybe even something more ambitious--but IP gets priority.

No idea why a whole team of executives thought it made sense to use a 50-year-old sitcom for their next reboot, but the premise of Good Times specifically just seems really limiting. It had no choice but to be about an African family in the projects again, and yet they found a way to make it even more offensive by filling it with tired stereotypes to play up the satire. I was really looking forward to Obi...

Like with all western adult cartoons, you can show tons of bloody violence but no actual nudity. The most you get is the mom's nude silhouette in bed, some crusty old lady's tits (pixelated), and I think you see the ballsacks of the Donald Trump cherubs (yes, you read that right). Gotta admit tho, the lactation scene did it for me
>>
>>143361146
No. I watched both HQ and Velma. HQ was actually good, and Velma's only real problem was it just wasn't funny. It had the potential to be funny with what they were working with, but they just weren't good enough writers make it funny.

This, I don't know who the fuck this is for. I'm convinced that it only exists to make headlines, because not only is it incredibly offensive, it's also incredibly cheaply made.

That's the part I can't get over. The animation is SO CHEAP. It's practically an animatic at points. It genuinely looks like the Red Ape Family, but somehow even worse. There's parts where they just took a stock image and drew some lines on it. Actual Newgrounds tier stuff.

I like the Lascars-inspired art style, but the bad thing about that is it makes it even more obvious how cheap Netflix was with the animation. They cut so many corners and made the final product so choppy it's almost distracting. A bunch of cool designs wasted on obnoxious scripts and a likely rushed production.

>This, I don't know who the fuck this is for.
I can see what they're going for, trying to be somewhat edutaining, but you can't do that while also making it super exaggerated and satirical at the same time. Imagine if you took Family Guy seriously. Now imagine if you took Family Guy seriously when it's 100x more outlandish and fantastical. Doesn't work, right?

Still, even the worst shows still have *some* good qualities. There'd be the odd good joke here and there, Cree Summer's many voice roles were big highlights, and Junior cracked me up in that last episode. Also I'm pretty sure this is the first adult cartoon led by an African female showrunner, so I can see how she still tried stuff that hadn't been done in this genre or medium before, even with all the edgy jokes piled on the surface. I did find the Willy Wonka feminism story kinda sweet and a bit clever overall, but the G.O.P. shit draaaagged it back by being so on-the-nose. THAT'S the show's main issue. It's anything BUT subtle. I'm tired of every show with an African lead needing to be so preachy. We could've just had a sitcom, an original one at that.

That was especially stupid. Why include that in a TV-MA streaming exclusive if you're just gonna bleep it out anyway? This was never a problem with The Boondocks, but now I keep seeing it happening constantly. I'm reminded of one of the animated shorts for The Boys using a song with the word and having that censored. Either own that shit or don't bother!
>>
>>143363781
Boondocks had an absurd amount of real celebrities endorsing it and it was overt heavy handed satire that was actually really funny too which helps immensely. Black Dynamite didn't have those same protections but still got away with it probably just for being a parody and really funny once again.

There'd still be the topic of the exaggerated stereotypes and the whole thing reading like trauma porn. Then again, had it been its own original thing from the jump, maybe it wouldn't have revolved around such a tired premise that Eddie Murphy already covered decades earlier.

Really sucks that the few new adult cartoons that dare to look visually interesting are bogged down by being controversial "reimaginings" of beloved IP. This style could've been used for something more interesting, like Mkhuzi: The Spirit Racer.
>>

The problem is they refused to commit to the story until the last episode were the father has to become a police officer and has to hold his son who is now a gang member at gunpoint to stop him from killing someone meanwhile the mother becomes a puppet for the mayor who is gentrifying her neighborhood as all their neighbors are sent to the worst shithole imaginable and you can actually taste the misery it's a good episode
You have one episode, the study pills episode gets resolved with one line of dialogue.
I think they tried to do the funny at first but heavy at the end thing except it wasn't funny so it didn't work, the baby is not that bad tho and is not the comic relief or that much featured in the show itself, you have to watch it to get it

The thing about vhelma is it either had actual input from office lady instead of just her name attached or the writers tried to make it obvious it was her, it was a total vanity project, there was a lot of the writers think this is funny but it isn't funny at all going around
I even watched season 2 and they completely gave up on it being a comedy show, which it wasnt much of to begin with, they outright drop the romance subplot between vhelma and norbile even tho it was teased in the trailer and they pulled back on half of Fred's things .
They could barely write one season of that shit, season two they clearly cane up with the ending first then tried to make things fir around to get to that point which is how a teenager writes a fanfiction

That was actually one of the better episodes imo. There's truth to how female bodily health has always been treated as taboo or inappropriate when it's a natural thing, especially in African communities that sometimes go overboard with their Christian puritanical values. The arc Beverly went through in overcoming her generational trauma felt earned, and I like the nuance with how they addressed how sometimes keeping this stuff on the downlow can lead to adolescent girls lashing out through their sexual expression after so many years of shame. It wasn't necessarily shitting on said female sexual expression, just explaining where it can sometimes come from.

This was Ranada Shepard using her platform to try something not typically seen in western adult animation, so I'll give her props for that. If you take everything that took place in Grey's hallucination so literally, it can be easy to lose track of what they were going for, but I feel the emotional journey worked, even with that ham-fisted Donald Trump expy. It was the episode about Junior on focus meds that lost me. That one got too literal to the point where it just stopped making sense.

The article in OP explains it:

>The executive producers — Seth MacFarlane, Steph Curry and Norman Lear — they didn’t write. The way Hollywood works is that this is sold because they have deals with Sony. Sony has the rights to Norman Lear’s catalog. And when you’re talking about a reimagination, it was actually Steph Curry’s company who came up with the concept to animate this. They brought it to Norman Lear’s company and Norman said, “I’m good friends with Seth. He knows animation. It’d be great to have him in the space to walk it in when we shop it.” And they walked it into Carl Jones and they sold it.
I'm guessing Curry wasn't even aware this show was happening and just had his company sign off on it, so I don't know why Lear and MacFarlane thought going through with this was worth it in the end. Those two are TV comedy LEGENDS. They don't need to revive dead franchises, they can slap their names onto any original project and have it coast through development. The fact they thought an edgy reboot about an African family in the projects made the most sense shows just how careless they are with their influence.

It's embarrassing to see her try and defend the drug dealing baby. If you're aware of the stigma against African boys and their being seen as threats at such a young age, then a satirical adult comedy is not the place to call attention to that. Poking fun at such an issue that way is really just normalizing it in the end. The worst Velma ever did was put a subversive spin on the Hanna-Barberaverse and antagonize any potential viewer who'd be offended by an Indian Velma (something that wasn't at all necessary). With that show people were more offended by having "their childhood ruined," but the Good Times cartoon is actually harmful.
