The Son of Dathomir comic was good, it would have been cool seeing that in action. I don't know why they made him so weak for almost all the show. Maybe they thought they could "build him up" as a threat, which I think is just dumb.

I liked his original backstory. Too bad Disney went apesh8t over it painting the Jedi as mercenary fucks who helped literal Slaver Mantises get away with mass Lizardman Enslavement because the corrupt Senate told them to.

as a prequel villian, he's meant to emulate an aspect of vader. Maul was the intimidation factor, douku was the fallen jedi aspect and in the generals case, a cyborg terror whose as stunted as he's enhanced. Being more machine than man is a disadvantage in a setting where turning off your targeting computer when a friends ghost tells you to is the correct option. Palpatine knew this, it's why greivous works for the faction he set up to fail, and why Vader was punished with a suit that caused him constant agony.

>>
>>143498138
To be fair, Lucas and Filoni were already trying to slightly rewrite his backstory when TCW was airing, years before Disney. It's where the "ackshually he's just jealous of the Jedis abilities" story came from. Disney has begun to recanonize a lot of his story, but it's in shit casuals don't read. People only pay attention to the movies and shows, and I doubt he'll get anything in those. It'd be a perfect Tales of the Separatists story.

General Grievous should've been one of the top 5 duelists in his time, he was trained by one of the best duelists ( Doku ) and his whole purpose was to be an "anti-jedi" soldier. Grievous was definitely designed to sell action figures. He barely does much in the movie but makes for an amazing toy.

Something Disney totally forgot when they bought the franchise, make toyetic characters. They do not have to do a whole lot, but add them and sell merch to keep the movies paid for.

Reminder that Grievous was never "ruined." It's just that the so-called "Expanded Universe" fanfiction is a drastically different interpretation of the character, that has nothing to do with the actual Star Wars and reality of the person who created the character to begin with - George Lucas. He was always the same in George's Star Wars, from start to finish:>>143504857

>IGN: In "Shadow Warrior," you had the unlikely but fascinating battle of the Gungans versus Grievous. It's in the rain, it's really intense… Was that a lot of fun to approach that and see how that would play out?

>Filoni: Yeah, because that was a huge challenge. I think I've said before how I went back and forth on that one with George several times saying, "Wow, if we do this to Grievous, I think that's going to be a big, big loss for him. His credibility's going to go down." You know, we argued about it back and forth several times trying to figure out was that going to be the best move. George was always pretty resolute that it was going to be fine, and he talked with me through how we could achieve it. And I thought, "Well, if we're going to take him out, then we have to lose something pretty big on the good guys' side to make the sacrifice seem pretty meaningful." So we had to take out Tarpals, which is pretty sad actually. He's a likable Gungan for sure.

>TFN: So what is the deal with General Grievous’ origin? There’s the first version with the shuttle crash where Dooku upgraded him and there’s the new one with him choosing to upgrade himself. Why the different versions?

>Henry [Gilroy]: George envisioned something different than what was created for the EU and Dave and I jumped at the chance to explore that. In my mind, the EU origin created a character that was twisted and bitter and very tragic, but not very fun. The great thing about Vader in A New Hope is, as soon as you see him onscreen, you want to boo him. He’s so over the top evil. Same with the Emperor. They are pure evil and they are fun — bad guys you love to hate! Well, until we know who Vader is. Anyway, knowing that poor old Grievous has this background as a noble warrior who was fighting for his people, then was sadly tricked my Dooku reduced him to a straight up pawn, who was played by the seppies, because he really wasn’t the master of his own destiny, he was more a product of Dooku’s evil machinations than his own pride and villainy. It was more in Grievous’ character (as created by George Lucas) to choose to upgrade himself, because he chose to sacrifice his ‘humanity’ for the power to become the greatest killer in the galaxy. He wasn’t able to do it via The Force, so he chose to make himself into a mechanical monster that dominated the most powerful beings in the galaxy, the Force users, the Jedi. Grievous is not a tragic character, he’s a cold blooded mass murderer, a classic old school villain (and different from Vader) in that he doesn’t have any redeeming characteristics. What kind of a vain egomaniac has statues of himself in his house? Maybe one who is trying to convince himself he did the right thing.

You can do both. he can be someone who had a fucked up past, yet also coveted power.
>What kind of a vain egomaniac has statues of himself in his house? Maybe one who is trying to convince himself he did the right thing.
Why would a cold blooded mass murderer with no redeeming characteristics keep statues to convince himself of anything? That implies something of a conscience. Even in the old EU, with the backstory Gilroy seems to hate so much, Grievous never second guessed himself once he became a cyborg. He was completely resolute.

He also wrote the Eyes of Revolution comic, AKA the honorable warrior story Henry Gilroy hates so much. It was first mentioned in the Labyrinth of Evil novel, published in January of 2005. The comic was published March of 2005. I wonder how close communication was between Warren Fu and James Luceno on the topic. Abel G Pena later added to it in Star Wars Insider #86, published in February of 2006.

>"My story essentially deals with the birth of General Grievous. It follows him from his mysterious shuttle accident as a noble Khalee [sic] general to his rebirth as a cold-blooded cyborg. I figured that the fans would like to know how Grievous came to be. This is my chance to not only tell them but also to show them."

> lucas's grievous was just some separatist general
Grievous is just some separatist general. He is literally General Grievous. And no, Lucas from the start said that he is part-alien part-droid. Of course, designs evolve. But designers work off of what the director tells them. Then Lucas picks the design that is closest to his vision.
Lucas created all the characters and their concepts. They came from his fucking head. Which is then translated into designs. Of course, he did not design them - that's not his fucking job. What that dumb monkey said here: >>143505723

No, he didn't "start" as that. That was merely one of the many initial designs. Among others was what would become Magnaguards and "Winged General" by McCaig. Lucas did not describe him as a "kid in the chair." Lucas described his as "part alien" or droid. Kid in a chair was Thompson's interpretation, that was rejected by Lucas outright.

Aw, Sheev is so nice, praising Grievous.

>>

Kind of, tho the over reactionary nature is something TCW kinda did start? And you can definitely say the maul's return was how we got the Palpatine return with basically no real explanation.

The ST itself is a case of each movie being an anti-what came right before without much of a plan, but there's certainly more of tcw's germs in everything else, especially as it remains so well regarded.

>>143509666
I like both renditions of his return...but if you're doing it "for real", you should try to explain it beyond "he's too angry to die".
>>
>>143509767
While true, it was often used as an argument to deligimtaize it. And cases like boba fett had entire stories dedicated to It or had a little bit more ambiguity. Palpatine in DE had a fairly long explanation for it for example.

There's Maw which people always cite as a justification for maul, but that was a game with a very excuse plot. And he's much less human than maul being like twice his size so it could just be his anatomy. And darth sion is portrayed as special due to his ability to still stand, presented very much as almost an anomalous usage of the force in the same way nihilus is.

The thing about JJ Abrams is that he is an actual sóyjak filmmaker. He doesn't think about the story or themes for a second, he just wants to point at recognisable things.
Rian Johnson's issues on the other hand are mostly problems within current era "high brow" art where you gotta SUBVERT SUBVERT SUBVERT and piss off people intentionally.

Best part about star wars for me.
You know, I dont get the midiclorian hate. Maybe gen x was devoid of any true spirituality, or peak boomer hippie george had some different ones, but living entities, part of all life that allow great cosmic connections is the sort of shit people dropping acid and talking shit about the man would come up with.
Everything I found out about his cosmology, being inspired by the theory that mitochondria where a different form of life independent of cells before incorporation, to midiclorians communing and interacting with smaller entities called "the whills" that exist as a cosmic constant oneness and are the ones telling the story. It's as cool and out there as you can expect any sober mind to make and comprehend.

You know, it's very interesting in consideration, because Lucas WAS, at the very least, advocate of the backstory we see in Labyrinth of Evil/Warren Fu's the Eyes of Revolution, to my and many other's surprise. Back in April someone here shared some interview excerpts of Luceno where he confirms just as much when asked whom or what gave him the direction to give Grievous his backstory in LoE.

It ultimately felt unnecessary too, almost like Lucas was trying to insert a little bit more sci-fi into the movie. I guess it can be a bit of a convenient way for Jedi to find other Force sensitives though.
>>143511491
Yeah, that was weird. Classic case of the Lucas flip-flop. The story is a great setup for the character, and then he went back on it. I genuinely think it's simply a case of him not wanting someone to steal spotlight from Vader, which makes no sense to me, because I love both characters.

Plus, even with their similarities using the old Grievous backstory, the end result is completely different. Vader had someone who unconditionally loved him and saw good in him in Luke, and that led to his redemption.

Grievous didn't, and was always doomed to die alone.
>>
>>143511769
>a little bit more sci-fi into the movie
Which would be weird since the prequels and TCW were a very hard turn into the more fantasy elements of Star Wars.
I do personally wish SW went into a more sci fi route, but midiclorians weren't the way to do it.

Rian Johnson's issues is that, quite frankly, he's not as smart as he think he is. He's a terrible writer that thinks he is making revolutionary movies, but he's a director that made his reputation from Disney movies with his dialogue writing being riddled with irony poisoned Whedon-isms that cannot stay serious to save it's life.
>>
>>143504857

It's weird that Lucas intended Grievous to be some kind of craven slime-ball considering how his character design doesn't communicate that at all. He's a hulking, 7-ft. tall, cybernetic monstrosity who explicitly specializes in the use of melee weapons when fighting others. The skeletal designs shouts violence and death, not running away like a pussy. Nothing about his appearance indicates the sort of mustache-twirling, cowardly villain George Lucas apparently had in mind, and there's plenty of other character designs that would've fitted it much better (such as nemoidians, since they're literally chink amphibians) so the whole thing just comes across as jarring.

The level of miscommunication required for Genndy to perceive him as an incredible slasher movie killing machine when George intended him as a pathetic fist-shaking old-fashioned loser of a villain is immense.

>Only times he's allowed to do literally ANYTHING are the episodes where he murders a constantly deathflagging padawan and leads a witch genocide which, while based, has him get humiliated in a 1v1 before he flips the table

Yeah, that fucking blue boss baby design would've made much more sense for the kind of character Lucas had in mind, and the fact he couldn't even recognize that shows how little he understood what it was that he wanted (which makes it a microcosm of the entirety of the prequel trilogy when you think about it).

That's not a perception thing, though. The use of practical effects doesn't change how so much of the action revolves around CGI. Moreover, a lot of the practical models really aren't more than backgrounds, and the very limited sets and location work (that, again, accommodate a lot of CGI) give the movies a very flat, sterile look. Geonosis is an obvious example since they made a very large detailed model, yet the arena scenes are a perennial go-to example of unconvincing excess.

Not all of the compositing in the OT is great either, but with a few exceptions (like the speeder bike sequence on Endor) there's usually more for the lighting and camera to make use of, so they feel a lot more alive even in quiet moments.
>>
>>143520394
Tbh that's mostly attack of the clones. And again, TFA used more digital shots than the entirety of the prequels, the prequels used more practical effects than the OT. Yet the marketing for TFA was all "LOOK ITS PRACTICAL EFFECTS GUYS!!"

Cgi was new during the prequels, so it was marketed around that, even tho It ultimately still used a lot of practical stuff, we can argue if it was composited well, but that wasn't the go-to argument against them lol.
>>
>>143520557
Attack of the clones holds up the least of the prequels, significantly worse than the phantom menace.

It isn't, though. Dooku and co. still become rubbery computer models when the lightsabers get whipped out. AOTC is the worst looking, but ROTS suffers from it for most of the movie. Even TPM does with the Gungan side of the Naboo battle.
>we can argue if it was composited well, but that wasn't the go-to argument against them lol.

I do think they're related, the compositing wasn't the best, but that's not "CGI bad" like was the prevalent narrative at the time, come on.
>>
>>143521372
The point is that the practical stuff still suffers from the digital stuff. Obviously a lot of the CGI sucked ass, but things like the CGI clones looking awkward or Palpatine briefly morphing into a cartoon are a separate issue from whether or not the prequels had shots of miniatures too.
>>
>>143521442
Sure? What im saying is that's not what the marketing of tfa saying every other minute that they had practical effects was meant to respond to.

People simplified the issue to "CGI bad" but Lucas didn't use it in a good way for it's time.
Some 3d render shots stick out like a sore thumb, like the TPM battle. The technology just wasn't mature enough for the scale the prequels used it.
TFA can get away with it because it's a movie from 2015. It's scummy how the studios hide the VFX work but that's another discussion.
I think things would have been better if the VFX philosophy of the prequels and sequels was swapped around: 1-2-3 should have used lots of puppets, miniatures and costumes while saving the CGI for the absurd things like LotR did and 7-8-9 should have gone all in with crazy 3d rendered landscapes and aliens.

Eh i think its just a clear case of "see guys we're not like them" but then the actual CGI looks worse and the practical effects arent really used for plot relevant characters (there isn't a single narratively important alien outside of chewie for some reason). It also doesn't help most of the designs look very similar too.

Its just part of a broader issue with tfa and tlj (and tros just looks kinda bad) the "to make right what went wrong" line is more apparent.

>>
>>143530645
I kinda wish we could explore what he'd be as an antagonist without the need to be disposed of for vader ngl. Only the rots novelization had that, which seemed to be a remant from an older idea of him being a proto-tarkin (probably cause lee), everything else in both canon and EU doesn't have that backstory. He had no problem training grievous, had zero issues being friends with demask, wanted yoda to join and about half of his dark acolytes weren't human, well outside of sora they were near human but still.

Real life cultures have multiple wives, if everyone in SW is monogamous it feels weird?

>Real life cultures have multiple wives, if everyone in SW is monogamous it feels weird?
I'd drop the whole thing entirely. Out of all of his backstory, it feels like the fat that can be trimmed away. I'd have him grieving Ronderu by going straight to war, and focusing on that singularly, like he would later in life. At best, burying his grief in a family he isn't even really there for seems redundant, and an outright fetish fic at worst.

I get the feeling that Dooku would constantly scold Grievous on his posture, especially at public events like propaganda holocasts. Honestly makes for a pretty funny scenario if any writefags are lurking.

The classic. I wish this story got an official adaptation, it's a good represenation of Grievous as a force of nature.

The thought of Grievous having to give speeches and engage in Confederacy politicking once in a while is actually strangely cute to me.
>Now, General, you can't just go around killing Jedi all the time. This is part of your job as well. And try not to threaten these poor, weak fools.
>........Fine.

I read a chapter in a fic where he was tasked with saving some Separatist politicians and Mina Bonteri wasn't afraid of him and actually spoke to him like a real person.

It's very slow burn Obi-Wan/Grievous, but that is really minimal, and only in later chapters if you don't like that (I do). Seeing Grievous be "normal" among other characters is cute. It's pretty true. I used to be heavily in the Transformers fandom too. Grievous fans, at least on Tumblr, seem to fall into two groups mostly:
Us weirdos, who like him as a cyborg and/or organic. If we ship, we are not above shipping him as a cyborg, because we like that shit.
The ones who prefer organic Grievous. If they ship, they ship him with Ronderu and/or the wives. Probably wouldn't survive two minutes in the TF fandom.

That's fine. It's not the worst backstory. An egomaniac warrior who wants to be THE BEST(tm) turns himself into a killing machine is very suitable.
The Legend's lore just came first and turned out to be really cool so it's hard to shake the preference.
It would not be too hard to combine the old and new by saying the augmentations were used to make him more effective at killing the Huk during the war, especially after his half-sister(?)-wife(?)-force bonded lady friend got killed.
Then there's another reckoning I've seen in fanfiction where Gennedy Grievous had the old EU backstory and was a separate character to the Clone Wars Grievous who has he current backstory. Essentially, Palps and Dooku got worried they made Grievous too good and too independent, so they put him in stasis for a rainy day and replaced him with a competent enough doppelganger who had a hateboner for jedi and an inferiority complex, and made his cybernetics worse. Then brainwashed him into thinking he was Grievous.
It's a decent enough explanation, and nets you two Grievous's.
>>
>>143542170
That image is close to being a decade old.
>>
>>143495502
For me, the real Grievous is the micro-series one.
Everyone can go around explaining shit, but I will say that Grievous was intentionally nerfed for both the movie and the CGI Clone Wars.
I don't care what George thought. You can have a cunning villain and he can be powerful. And being both powerful and cunning can be insanely lethal.

BTW, I prefer his original origin story to his current one. Grievous should've been one of the facades (along with Dooku and Maul) of what Anakin would become as Darth Vader.

I didn't know about that, and I thought I was pretty brushed up on my grievous/Kaleesh history. I looked on Wookieepedia, and it seems to be this that you are referring to.

>After Grievous departed Kalee, his former warriors, now under the command of Bentilais san Sk'ar, slaughtered the Huk on the Kalee colony world of Oben. They then moved their people to this resource-rich world.[6]

>Following the rise of the New Order, a conflict erupted between Kaleesh and Imperial forces. Bentilais san Sk'ar and his warriors resisted Imperial rule for over ten years.[13] The conflict ended when Captain Thrawn bombarded the planet Oben. Sk'ar then left Kalee space to join the Empire.[6]

I like the idea of the comic more than the execution. A damaged, self-destructive person who could fall light or dark is neat to me. It feels like the best version of grievous sorta falls squarely in the middle of all his depictions.
>Crafty, interested in self-preservation, and will retreat when there's nothing more to do
>But not particularly cowardly, and will see a situation through until staying longer would be foolish

>Too strong to be simply swatted aside by a jedi and a very dangerous threat to non-force users
>But not so strong as to be able to casually defeat multiple jedi at once, he'd withdraw before doing something so risky

>Intelligent enough to be a competent commander, his plans are reasonable and can't just be ignored or brushed aside
>Emotional or prideful enough to have moments where his personal hangups cause him to make a mistake or do something irrational

>Is mostly a calculating and pragmatic figure without very many qualms about doing bad shit

No, it wasn't. Throughout every period in human history, commanders stayed out of fighting so that they could command. You don't do that by running point in the field. The other anon is correct. If a commander is personally fighting, then their side is losing or the commander in question is a retard.

It was only in the story Abel G Pena wrote. He would have prophetic dreams, which I agree with the other anon, very strongly implies some level of unknown Force sensitivity. After the shuttle crash, they used Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas blood for a transfusion (how a human and a Kalessh would be compatible there, who knows, it's Star Wars) but it didn't give him any midichlorians. I find it disingenuous to call Genndy Wars fanfiction. They were made with Lucas's supervision specifically to hype up the release of Episode 3. The television event was so widely advertised that my Father's Middle aged friends would come over to our house just to watch what originally were 2 minute episodes.

Lucas new full well he has set the expectation in everyone's mind that Grievous was the biggest badass the franchise has ever seen. Everyone knew who he was and what his deal was weeks before the movie even came out.
>>
>>143571079
Lucas defintely had a lot of involvement there, the only reason genndy didn't work on the full show later was cause George refused to do the film he agreed for him in a time so they parted ways.

They like talking about him, but it's usually shit like this. Sorry for the Twitter screencap.

It's a logic I don't understand. They'll claim to love a character, yet want to see them eternally humiliated. I don't even want that with characters I don't like. I just simply ignore the ones I don't like.

Leaders being at the front was used to bolster morale. Historically, taking even 20% losses was enough to cause undisciplined armies to crumble. Having the general there bolstered a troops confidence though because they'd be risking their life too. That's why there are multiple instances where leaders like Alexander, Ceasar, and even up to the gunpowder era with Gustavus Adolphus, led from or mostly near to the front. Of course the morale argument falls apart with robots but humans need it

You're not wrong, but JJ's mentality goes deeper than that.

>>
>>143572067
I'm not 100% sure, but the further out it goes, the less represented it is. Even in Grievous' old story, it seems vague. They do mention pleaing with the Republic, so maybe the Kaleesh have a representative, it just comes down to the Kaleesh being dirt poor. The Huk seem to have one, and their planet is basically their neighbor.

I think in the nu-canon, which has recanonized a lot of Grievous' backstory, they switch Kalee from the Outer Rim to Wild Space, cutting off any possible representation in the Senate entirely.

Tatooine, notably, is also not a Republic world. Geonosis, practically it's next door neighbor, seems to have had some relationship with the Republic, but I don't know if it had a proper representative.
>>
>>143572198
Here. So I did some more looking on Wookieepedia, because >>143572067 is actually intriguing.

>In background material composed by George Lucas in 1977 for licensees of the Expanded Universe, the "Republican Senate" represented a total of 24,372 systems and elected a Chancellor to a four year term. There was a term limit of one term. During a crisis, a Chancellor extended his term to 12 years and finally declared himself Emperor, first by rhetorically attacking the bureaucracy and then by aligning himself with it. The Jedi sided with the Senate after it attempted to impeach him. This story appears to be the germ of much of the events of the Prequel trilogy.[9]

However, the 2,000 in the CIS poster seems to refer to the Delegation of 2,000, who were all loyal to Palpatine.

>>George pitches Grievous to Genndy as an imposing, badass, ruthlessly competent Jedi-killing machine
George didn't pitch shit. All Genndy and his team got was a few pieces of concept art. The original Vol. 1 ending episode that was Grievous' introduction originally didn't even have Grievous in it. There was no communication story-wise between George and Genndy. Genndy did what he wanted. He created his own version of Grievous with his own fighting style. Which is also why he didn't use four hands in Volume 1. Because they couldn't tell from the concept art that he had 4 hands. And George never told them. The same reason why Genndy's Grievous didn't cough. George never told them. And they had to add that Mace scene one week before release, it was very rushed, last minute addition to make it somewhat work with the movie. And he sounds completely differently and has different mannerisms.

Also, only manchildren, spics and pajeets like CW2003. It's always non-white DBZ-tards whenever anyone talks about it. It's shallow, ugly and retarded.
>>
>>143571079
>They were made with Lucas's supervision specifically to hype up the release of Episode 3.
They weren't. 2003 CW was entirely Genndy's fanfiction.

>Genndy: I was really nervous because it was a Star Wars project and we didn't know if we were going to be given the opportunity to do our thing or if we were going to have to work from someone else's script. It was a real pleasure to find out that we were going to be given complete free reign to do whatever we wanted to do.

GEORGE LUCAS: The original Cartoon Network series was just a little fun thing, kind of a promotional lead-in to Episode III. It was a test and when we finished I said I wanted to push the boundaries of animation, do a little anime. So it was a chance to play with the medium. I think a lot of the fans will like to see it on the big screen.

George Lucas: Well, the Genndy show was an experiment that we did with Cartoon Network that was 5 minutes each, they went sort of where commercials normally go, and it was an experiment, not only in doing five-minute shows, but it was an experiment in trying to translate "Star Wars" into an animated medium, and we felt very good about that. We thought it turned out really well, and we then took it to the next level, which was to do a full-out animated series of "The Clone Wars." There's not much overlap. Genndy did most of the animation and most of the stories for the first experimental series, and this one I'm pretty much following the mythology and the rules of the features.

Genndy literally came up with his version of Grievous all by himself, from his character to his fighting style. All Genndy got from George was early versions of the Grievous' concept art. That's it.

Are you calling George and Genndy liars? By Genndy's own admission, they were allowed to do what they wanted. They did not even have contact with George, but rather with Howard Roffman - the president of Lucasfilm licensing, i.e. the EU shit. Genndy himself met with George only a couple of times. He wasn't. He met with him only a couple of times, likely when the project was greenlit and when he was hired. Genndy himself said that they were allowed to do what they wanted, and that he was working with Howard Roffman, the Licensing guy, not George Lucas. George himself said that Genndy did the stories himself. You know why they were allowed to do what they wanted? Because 03CW was just an experiment and a toy ad. I don't quite get why fanatics like that guy try to pretend Genndy's depiction of the character was somehow conceived in a vacuum. George clearly had a different direction in mind for the character early, which should come across as obvious from the very moment he decided on Warren Fu's design. You can also see this in the film's storyboards, Luceno's statement regarding Grievous' backstory in Labyrinth of Evil, etc.
>>
>>143574533
The thing i wonder is...why does it matter? Its not as if goerge's works are flawless, if he had no involvement but most people can agree the take on the character is superior to george's own that's just someone using an idea of his better than he did. It happens all the time. Hell SW is a case where it happens very often.
>>
>>143574549
That was in a deleted scene actually. But its also true that George didn't really seem to have a nailed down version of greivious. He just needed a villain to fill for time until vader could start killing kids. So he was just a sep leader. The chosen design leant on badass but then george decided he wanted someone more cartoony to contrast but by then he had already given the idea that it was a cool abdass.

Not really. Again, Licensing can ask him questions, but it is still not his Star Wars, and it is very loose: >>143574092
He was very consistent over the years, that the EU was NOT his Star Wars. It was a parallel world, like Star Trek TV-shows and Star Trek EU. And even the EU people said multiple times, that everything post-ROTJ is merely their interpretation of events, and NOT George's, and if George was to ever make anything post-ROTJ, it would not take into account the EU.
>>
>>143574546
I'm sorry, that is being involved. Its not being super active, but he was involved. And they weren't allowed to do what they wanted. >>
>>143574536
>>Movies should never be changed! Art must be preserved
Yes, movies should never be changed and censored by the studios. That's the full quote. That's what he said. The artist can change the movies. George is the artist, and he has the right to do it.
>>
>>143574564
I'm sorry when he gives outlines notes of what they can and cant do that's being involved.

He had meetings with genndy, and obviously telling him :"yo put grievous in, he's a jedi killer dude', and then by volume 2 "oh no he's a coward lol". Its goerge he's random like that. Remember the maul game and how he just barged in one day with a darth talon statue telling them to put that in?
>>
>>143574592
>He was the studio tho.
He was the artist. He created it. When he was speaking about the studios, he was speaking about the distributors and those that give money and have nothing to do with the actual art itself.
>And he wasn't the sole creative in two of the three he changed.
He created it. He came up with it. He directed the first film. He wrote the stories for all 3. He financed them. He supervised every step of them.
>>
>>143574533
You'd think someone who tries to be so adherent to Lucas' philosophy would think for a second before engaging in discussion topics he doesn’t even like!
>>
>>143574599
He did not consider it canon. He did not consider it as having happened in his Star Wars universe. And his Star Wars universe is the only one that really matters.
>>
>>143574613
That's not how film works. He didn't direct empire, he wasn't the sole writer of empire. He didn't direct ROTJ. He's by definition an external studio head altering those films.
>>
>>143574619
>And his Star Wars universe is the only one that really matters.
Not to most people, for better or worse.
>>
>>143574615
You know for all my crticisims George seems like a nice guy, id love to have a salad with him and talk about star wars.
>>143574619
Again so? He considered it an equally valid AU. His specific word is that there's three star warses, his, the EU and fans. He considers it more than fan fiction but not his's.
>>
>>143574619
I'm sure he cared when he made money off it kek

The biggest point of george lucas changing his mind is that vader wasn't anakin's father until esb, he wasn't in most of esb's drafts even.

>>143574628
>He didn't direct empire, he wasn't the sole writer of empire. He didn't direct ROTJ.
He wrote the stories for them. He was there and micromanaging their creation.
>He's by definition an external studio head altering those films.
No, lol. He literally created it. He is the author and a creative. Becoming independent of studios is not becoming a third-party studio that has nothing do to with the actual creation of art, but only cares for profits, lol.
>>
>>143574673
He didnt micormanage empire, its been well documented, its why he considers it his least favorite.

And he still wasn't the sole creator, in that film he was a scriptwriter/producer. He's quite literally messing with other people's creation. one derived of his? Aboslutely. But still others.

And all of this ignores how film is a collaborative art medium. Its not just a director/wrier.Its that, the actors,t he editors, the special effects guys...
>>
>>143574619
Then why give notes at all? Why use ideas from it? Those two concepts are at odds. Either he didn't consider it canon at all or he at least considered it secondary materiall.
>>
>>143574705
>Then why give notes at all?
Because they asked him, and he was nice about it and gave them his input when he cared enough.
>Why use ideas from it?
Because he owns it. He recognized the people's creativity and in that way he rewarded some of it by using it in his Star Wars.
>Those two concepts are at odds. Either he didn't consider it canon at all or he at least considered it secondary materiall.
Not really. He did not consider it canon to his Star Wars world, period. But he could use the designs from it, like Aayla Secura or Darth Talon in his ST.
>>
>>143574647
He created the whole thing. It's not that the EU elevates Star Wars, it's the EU which is written by no-name third-grade sci-fi writers that is elevated by BEING STAR WARS - one of the most famous movie series in the history of mankind. People bought it because it was STAR WARS created by GEORGE LUCAS, the one that they saw in the theaters with their parents, not because it is some fucking book written by James Luceno or whatever. Lucas allowed those no-name authors to play in his sandbox. He was generous enough to allow it to exist. And those authors were paid for their work. Of course, he made money off it. Even though it was minuscule, compared to the actual juggernaut that carried Lucasfilm: toys and DVD sales.
>>
>>143574736
They didnt ask him tho, he came to the licensing woman after dark empire and told her to give notes. That's how she tells it would be weird to lie about that. And then he gave notes on every single novel and comic, until fate of the jedi where ei guess he just stopped caring about them. He flat out had them re-do the entire outline of NJO cause he said anakin shouldn't be the protagonist.

That implies some level of recognition. Again not as canon perhaps, but not as fanfiction either.

And quinlan vos, and the whole planet of curuscant, and the idea of holocrons (they were in a deleted scene for atoc even if they didn't make it in). And double bladed lightsabers. And dual wielding.
>>
>all this mental illness over a bunch of people in a frog breeding forum disgreeing with your preferred version of a character
>>
>>143574764
The Eu does elevate specific characters sure. No one cares about movie coward grievous. People care about the grievous in the comic and 03 show. And he sold merch of EU original characters which were bought not by star wars fans that only saw the movies but by people who cared about those specific characters. Fuck disney is still selling EU merch now.

What?
>>
>>143574790
I'm just a bit puzzled, i'm not arguing that goerge was super involved, that's silly. But he had some involvement. And honestly regardless, what does it matter? Its just a vague appeal to authority rather than actually employing critical skills of your own.
>>
>>143574794
No one knows EU Grievous even exists. Hundreds of millions of people saw ROTS and TCW - and that is the only Grievous that exists and that is known. For hundreds of millions of people, ROTS was Grievous' introduction. EU fans are such an inconsiderable minority that they are completely irrelevant. They are vocal, however, and bitch the loudest. But most of the people simply don't care.
>>
>>143574815
EU fans love appealing to authority, which turns out to be a lie, and then they resort to strawmans or shut down in denial. It's not about preference, but about lying, lol.
>>
>>143574830
>no one knows

>>
>>143574845

>>
>>143574783
>And then he gave notes on every single novel and comic, until fate of the jedi
lol, no he didn't
And even then, you have to be considerate of those "statements", because they came from EU people, and not George, whereas George actually said this:
>>143574564
>>143574092
For example, it's funny, how people think George "line-edited" ROTS novel, because Stover said that in a post on TheForce.net, and in that actual post he literally says that HE DIDN'T SEE LUCAS DO IT, and he ASSUMED IT, because Lucas edited SPECIFIC SCENES, which Stover read as him literally reading the entire fucking novel and editing it line-by-line, despite it being WILDLY different from the actual movie, and having outright retarded stuff, like Dooku being racist and Anakin quipping while killing the Separatists.
>>
>>143574879
As opposed to the real ROTS which has zero retarded shit in it!
>>
>>143574866
No, not really. It's always the same: "X ruined Grievous", with X being anyone but Lucas, because EUfags for some reason view Lucas as "their guy", lol. They are ignorant and unaware, and lie all the time, either out of ignorance or on purpose.
>>
>>143574879
But there's proof that he gave memos. Sure that doesn't mean he was super involved. But its you know some minimum level of involvement.

That too, he lost any arbitration he might have had when he sold his soul to the white slavers.
>>
>>143574930
There is nothing retarded. He needed to kill them to become strong in the Dark Side to save pregnant Padme, and he needed to kill them, because otherwise there would be a civil war without end. Whereas ROTS novel is full of actually dumb stuff. Dooku being racist just makes no sense. It is so outlandish and out of nowhere, that it is honestly just baffling. It is not even consistent with the rest of the EU, where Dooku wasn't characterized like that anywhere - ever. Or the fact that Anakin was mad at the Council because he could not get some fucking holocron from the vault, lol. Or Mace Windu ackchyually using the Dark Side because muh VAPAAD. Or Palpatine arguing that being a Sith is not illegal. Or Yoda complaining that the Jedi are "stagnant". It's full of dumb stuff that is entirely contradictory to what George Lucas had said and had done, both before it and after it.
>>
>>143574898
It seems to me like you have a hate boner against people that like the EU and thus resort to an appeal to god (a god figure that is notoriously inconsitnent and with a mixed track record) as a way to "epicly own" them, rather than any actual interest in the topic of this thread. Its likely why you have a shcizo nickname. A feat reserved to the most annoying of co users.

Tolkien being dead and his creation being whored it out to Amazon and whoever else doesn't suddenly mean Tolkien isn't the sole authority over Middle-earth. He is. He created it, and ergo only his works and opinions matter. Same with Herbert and Dune. Disney raping Star Wars is irrelevant. Only Lucas' work and words matter. I only care what the guy who made it has to say about it, not anyone else.
>>
>>143574996
I love hte novel, the Dooku thing is stupid. I don't think anyone would disagree wit that. The secrets of the council thing does make him seem less well whiney? It gives him an actual reason for the guy that shouldn't care what the council thinks why he cares what they think. The mace thing is from the republic comics. Yoda saying the jedi are stagnant is pretty in-line with the movies id say. The sith thing being illegal is funny, its what a smirmey politician would say.

And its an actually good literary work. Then again rots is my second favorite SW movie to begin with.
>>
>>143575022
He didnt sell it. George did. Becuase people were mean to him online
>>
>>143575008
Yes, because after chopping off Mace Windu's hand and betraying the Jedi Order, there was no coming back for Anakin, and he had to commit to it fully. Saving his wife was the only thing he had left. And you must have missed the part where he was crying, because he was actually feeling bad about what he had done. But there was no turning back. Damn, you fags really have 0 media literacy, which is why you need a bunch of shitty books that just make it worse.

>The secrets of the council thing does make him seem less well whiney? It gives him an actual reason for the guy that shouldn't care what the council thinks why he cares what they think.
Not really. Anakin is capable and smart enough to find a way into the vault. It's a dumb thing to be mad about. That is assuming that the Jedi have some knowledge to stop people from death. Which is contradictory to the theme of the movie and what Yoda was trying to teach him: train yourself to let go and rejoice of people becoming one with the force, accept death as a natural part of life. It's retarded on multiple levels. It makes both Anakin and the Jedi actively worse.

>Yoda saying the jedi are stagnant is pretty in-line with the movies id say.
Not really. Nothing in the movies indicated that. And I am confused at what exactly is Stover trying to say here? Stagnant how? What were they supposed to do? lmao, he never actually elaborated

>And its an actually good literary work.
Not really. It is cringe to read.
>This is how it feels being Anakin Skywalker. Forever.

No, he sold it because he was old, because he wanted to secure the future for the company and employees, and because he just got a newborn child, and making a new trilogy would take him a decade, and he would be finished only in 2022. He was promised to be kept as a creative consultant and that his story treatments would be considered. He was tricked.

>>
>>143575064
That was the first time he got the opportunity to really reflect at what he did. There was no time before that. And even then, killing living beings who surrendered and begged for their lives was pretty terrible. Scumbag or not. Anakin knew it was wrong.

>>
>>143575097
What that would be as much going against it as what he ends doing. And its anakin's cope that he can find a way to do it if he has access to that because he believes the jedi are holding him back which has precedent.

>Should we tell the senante our ability to use the force is diminished?
Its barely there but its there. Obviously due to the sith's influence than their own fault per say, but they were stagnant. It was a theme in episode 2.

I'm sorry that you think a well written line reccuring a book to put us in the main character's shoes is bad?
>The first dawn of light in your universe brings pain. The light burns you. It will always burn you. Part of you will always lie upon black glass sand beside a lake of fire while flames chew upon your flesh. You can hear yourself breathing. It comes hard, and harsh, and it scrapes nerves already raw, but you cannot stop it. You can never stop it. You cannot even slow it down. You don’t even have lungs anymore. Mechanisms hardwired into your chest breathe for you. They will pump oxygen into your bloodstream forever.

>>
>>143575189
>And its anakin's cope that he can find a way to do it if he has access to that because he believes the jedi are holding him back which has precedent.
That's retarded. Nothing established that. Jedi's teaching from the get-go, their core tenet is letting go and accepting the translucent nature of life. They teach it from the start. Anakin has no reason to assume that they have some kind of cheat death knowledge. It's fucking retarded. And again, Anakin is capable, bold, creative and smart enough to find his own way into the Holocron vault and check for himself.

>Its barely there but its there. Obviously due to the sith's influence than their own fault per say, but they were stagnant. It was a theme in episode 2.
Not really. Nothing you had said indicates that they are stagnant. How does that make them stagnant? Stagnant implies that they did not take enough action. But they did. Again, what the fuck is Stover trying to say? He never clarified. They could not expose the Dark Side cloud to the Senate, because they knew the Sith were out there, and they could not do it in the face of Separatist crisis, because that would be used against the Republic.

>I'm sorry that you think a well written line reccuring a book to put us in the main character's shoes is bad?
It's too self-indulgent and pompous. It reads like it was written by a high schooler. Read more books.

>>143575279

>>
>>143575279
Well yes, but it is consitent with anakin's motivations, slightly more than just getting angry over not being in the council which is just a superficial way of showing they don't trust him. And anakin is capable and bold and self assured enough where that external validation shouldn't really be a factor by then.

I mean he said it in attack of the clones, he said that there were too many arrogant jedi and that their abilities had diminished. That sounds like stagnation. And its yoda's opinion.

Ive read plenty, I love reading. Rots's novelization is still one of my favorite books.
