At some point they decide for Mai to genuinely give him a chance and THEN we settle into the cliche dynamics shown in that page.It's legitimately fucking weird, along with a lot of other weird ass stuff in these comics. What's funny is the writing tends to get better once Gurihiru is no longer being hired to draw them.
