Most of the show's mysteries and strangeness come back around to the question of who built this program, and why. Presumably this will slowly be explained as things go along, including why a bunch of adults (seemingly voluntarily) entered this thing. If the show is leaning into existentialist horror, it would be kind of interesting if this were a scenario akin to the movie "Cube", where there's no actual reason for why this system exists and it's just the result of impersonal AI algorithms and soulless corporate processes left to run on their own until they were left with this giant sprawling network full of random crap that doesn't serve any real purpose aside from simply repeating itself endlessly.The only thing worse than being potentially trapped for eternity in a procedurally-generated digital purgatory is the realization that you aren't even there for any good reason. Maybe all of the current "prisoners" are just there because they were bored and directionless amidst a corporatized, dystopian, post-truth, post-generative AI society and decided to plug themselves into this thing on a whim because they figured it couldn't be more dull than their real lives - only to freak out and forget once they actually get there because it fucks with your memories.
