What's the reason why GI. Joe reboot film series didn't end up being massively successful like Transformers films?

Boring main characters in the first, don't think anyone cared that much about the second.

Transformers=Giant robots and somehow, Shia's spazzy charm is still pretty fun to watch for three movies.

GI Joe=Played like the X-Men movies but lacking in interesting dynamics or internal conflict apart from the Cobra Commander reveal.

If Michael Bay directed this, he would have probably made a ridiculous but hyper patriotic series. Not sure if it would have been successful though.

They did fine. Why not a massive hit? Timing probably. They came out during peak MCU.

Trash

The first movie was ass because of bad casting and the changes they did, like the power armour. The story was also bad. Retaliation was better but kinda generic.

Also, GI Joe is a product of a specific period of the cold war and in 2009 there wasn't a concept of a 'faceless enemy' within the Western perspective. Communism was defeated, The most powerful heads of terror in the Middle East were all dead. The only fears Western society faced now comes from within. We saw the FBI shift focus from religious terrorism to "white nationalist terrorism" and "eco terrorism."(all of this was just a justification for their organization's own existence) nowadays I think fiction is going to have to go hard with the push against authoritarianism, cause we all saw what a democratic Middle East looked like in the 2010's and now a lot of people both on the right and left unironically praise authoritarian regimes.

because there is nothing unique about soldiers in the Hollywood market, but alien robots that transform into cars exist in a single franchise.

nah, military thrillers still sell. It's the sci-fi military shooters that don't have aliens that flunk.

The end was pretty good

Joseph Gordon-Levitt was great though.

Unlikable cast.
Drab, boring designs.
Lackluster action.

It's a difficult franchise to realize in a modern live action setting, it's kind of like Speed Racer in the sense that it needs to be bombastically over-the-top and dripping with camp... but most audiences don't want that. Even the diehard fans are seemingly divided, with some accepting the camp and others wanting gritty realism.

There was also a big element of unadulterated patriotism, which Hollywood fails to do these days without injecting a heaping spoonful of sarcasm. Cobra would be lauded as heroes on some college campuses these days.

Another oddity is the power suits and flashy tech weaponry from the Joes. In the original comics/toys/cartoon it was always Cobra that relied on science, while the Joes were just battle-hardened and expertly trained soldiers. By the time the joes adopted mech suits and robots the series was already on its last legs... why evoke the death of the franchise? The only Joes that used sci-fi shit in the original toys were a handful of specialized soldiers like Sci-Fi and Flash. The lasers became the default in the cartoon because of censorship, in the comics and toyline the soldiers used regular guns for the most part... no reason not to include some damn guns in a military-themed movie... Transformers had soldiers with guns.

unless they made cobra "russian nazis"

The human bullshit was everybody's least favourite part of Transformers, why do you think they'd like an entire movie of nothing but human bullshit?
Also I think there's a certain level of camp that GI Joe needs to really be successful, and these movies were overly serious.
>>
They killed the MC of the first movie in the beggining of the second one and tossed away most of the cool super tech for generic military action movie vehicles.

Seriously, what's the point of GI Joe if you can't make a proper toyline with crazy contraptions?

This, honestly. Who the fuck asked for some drama with Cobra commander, Duke and Baroness?
Also the first transformers movie was fun enough DESPITE the Bayisms.
>>
what do you think the GI Joes are gonna be like in the upcoming Transformers crossover movie?

Think it's gonna be serious? Campy? Super sci-fi shit?
>>
>>143547021
I thought that was cancelled
>>
>>143547906
No, it's happening.

G.I. Joe is lame, Transformers is cool
