A storytime for the 2004-2008 comic Muertitos(A Comedy of Dead Kids) by S. Cherrywell.Feel free to reply with comments or quips on the comic pages, it keeps the thread bumped and it keeps dear OP sane and engaged.
Issue 1 (Or Chapter 1, not actually super clear): Candy StripersJust for the record, if this thread dies for whatever reason, there won't be a second attempt. This is the longest of all the authors webcomics and I'm not doing this twice. (The second attempt would be one issue a day or something if it came to that)
This will be my 6th storytime this year, 8th if you include failed runs. Thankfully the last two did super well and broke the all time engagement record for these things set way back in 2021 when I started. I still needed a short break(last one ended on June 30th and thread died on Jul 2nd). But long ones tend to get worse engagment(FSR was pretty dead and the thread sunk within an hour or two of it ending) so I'm gonna need your strength anons.
Also before you say anything, it was 2004. This was well before Death and Satan became the two most overdone indie subjects. This is before Helluva and Hazbin, before Afterlife, Before Satina, before Purgatony, before that one with the house of ghosts. This was a decade before Welcome to Hell for gods sake.

based?
(didn't this actually happen to some guy in the 60s after a seizure surgery)
>>144602418>chubby ghost
End of Issue 1(or Chapter...still checking)Now, for the record, I'm doing the 2004 Genesis-Keenspace webcomic. This is technically a revival of an older 2001-2002 webcomic from FSR.com that lasted 6 issues and ran a year.I'm not including those here for spacing issues and because the quality is a lot worse and I didn't want to scare people off. BUT, if you want to read it in another tab or have something to check out if I take a break later or vanish or something, here it is from my storytime in June.https://desuarchive.org/co/thread/143918906/
Story 2 - Revenge of the School(The other reason I didn't do the old 01-02 stuff is because some aspects were soft-retconned. For example, this teacher's introduction is handled way differently. So we're sticking to 2004-2008 Muertitos)
>>144602360Who doesn't like lichen?
A couple of the characters here do come back later so don't forget em
Ah, Princi-Pal. Of all this authors weird principal characters(And there are a lot, including an alien and a weird pervy egg-balloon person) this guy is my favorite.
>>144602987Mosst people don’t
End of Story 2
>>144602484He's one of these things: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ch%C5%8Dchin%27obake
Story 3 - A Boring Educational Week(This guy's family line, Gokiburi, they are the glue that holds these webcomics together. They are ALWAYS there. This guys kid/grandkid was the one who helped create Reiko's Flying Suit and then was on the UN Mission to decide how to stop Heteo-Rodan. And HIS kid/grandkid helped invented the space tech boom would caused the world of Dystopia and eventually IntraGalactic)
>>144602481>a tanuki with testicular cancer in wards 3, 4 and 5Har.
I don't think we ever actually see Honeo's mom, adopted or otherwise here. She cameoed once in the old FSR comic, that's it
End of Story 3 (Mini, don't worry)Also if my math is correct that means Steph is a 'S8 bad' style fan. Which I do believe was the style at the time.Taking a 10 minute break the next one is massive. Go check out the old run comics to occupy yourself if need be https://desuarchive.org/co/thread/143918906/
Story 4: Octopus Rex(buckle up buckaroos)
>>144602323
>>144602797What a fhitty product.
Dear god she's been Stanleyed. Get the bike pump
Oh hey look at that file name, it's 2005. Happy new year.(To put that in context, this started in September 2004. The original Muertitos ended in September 2002 and Dystopia ended in April 2003. There was kind of a hiatus on big comic projects after that, FSR got a single issue revival in February 2004 that went nowhere and didn't get picked up, I assume that's the reason why. That's still missing btw)
>doc papadamn does that count as a deep cut
Oh hey Flying Suit Reiko cameo(I think that's a 3? 03? Checks out since technically speaking the filenames for the February 2004 single issue revival called it FSR-2)
>>144603267I didn't know onions could be guards.
>Oh hey an author comment under hereHello, hello, testing, testing, 1, 2, 3.This is a test of the "adding text to a page" system.Italics: Attack of the the Eye Creatures was the Beholder's favorite film.Bold: The peanuts hit the fuselage with a mighty g-g-grunch.I'm planning to start adding comments - but first let's see if this appears without messing up...
>>144603418Honestly, that Foxtrot gag isn't that far off from an actual Foxtrot gag.
(minor food poisoning delay)
>>144603690Oof, condolences. At least you're still storytiming this world instead of experiencing it yourself.
(on the prior one, who's 'Buffalo' Wing? Everyone else on the top row is a real dead actor. Lon Chaney Jr, Fatty Arbuckle, Marilyn Monroe, and River Phoenix)
>>144603751I think he's just there for the pun.
Anyone have the archive of all his stuff?
Oh crap we're running out of time on that one
Looks like Stephanie retired just in time to avoid this future disaster
YOU MANIACS! YOU BLEW IT UP! DAM
Ah so THIS is why Dystopia happened. (Pronounced Dice-Topia, Dyson Sphere Utopia)
>>144603890>>144603905>The Knave Little Toaster
Well I guess this clarifies some gaps in the larger Stephverse timeline. No matter what happened to Reiko or Tsugumi they both probably tied in the Nuclear war, then a thousand series of conflict and alien exploitation, then at some point we got free and built some dyson spheres cue Dystopia, and then we seemingly did some horrific revenge wars of conquest that got humanity kicked out of galactic society and as part of community service we have to give everyone in the universe 1 free ice cream.
Speaking of which, these two also cameoed in GPCB. They apparently enjoyed watching that death game version of Hungry Hungry Hippos that Puzztool challenged Tsugumi with. Probably didn't help that whole 'palace coup' thing though
Yeah that design change didn't age well. There's a reason that book(the first one I think) never became a show episode after all those years.
So it's the Hot Potato of doom. Every new batch of prop guys is briefly foretold to star.Have mercy on whoever gets the job in March 2031. It could even be (you)
>>144604111>It could even be (you)Pfft, like straight white guys will still be allowed to star in films in seven years.
>>144604123Also there was an author comment under that one.>Wooo! Big Daddy Hundred! Now let's see if I can make it to a thousand! It doesn't. Albeit if you include the character pages and the old FSR era stuff it's around 700. Thankfully we aren't.
What is it with this author and beegirls?
Wait wait wait are these the girls Tsugumi read about in that expose'?(And I know that's after, but New Memphis has a lot of wibbly wobbly timey wimey stuff going on so...)
>>144604183MY NAME IS
>>144604223Wise words. Wise, bewildering words.
(seriously who is the Wing guy. All the other actors are either real dead actors or named after real actors like McDrooly Caulken)
wonder how that turned out
It isn't steam it's smoke.
(Technically not yet we've got two more. Also, does that mean Revenge of the School is considered just a half issue? FSR had a really nice organization system and every one since got messier and messier)
Not the sponsorf guys again.Well, while their here, I've been told by several of my regular readers to officially back Cheesecake Saint Cherrywell's(fellow Steph comic girl from GPCB) bid for Miss. /co/lympus this September. So uh, sure I guess. Good luck with that
End of Story 4author comment>Also, I realized after drawing this that I forgot to give him the hair from the design sketches. So this guy really did get hosed.
Story 5 - The Mukade Family
Author comment>I'm twenty-five years old today! I think that's a good point to stay at, don't you? I'm old enough not to want to get older, but you're never too old to enjoy going out to birthday dinner and getting presents, so, boo-yah for me.This was April 8th 2005. So born on April 8th 1980. She's 44 now, explains the horny running out hence retirement.
End of Story 5.Short break before I rev up again
Story 6 - Kimberly Kumquat and the Demon Dork
Oh hey, first appearence of Death's modern design. (His scenes in Candy Stripers were way closer to how the 2001-2002 version drew him, and the one in)
(the one in the Octopus Rex story may or may not be his wife)
(i THINK this is around the time that cancelled No Boom project was being worked on)
Remember Lafcadio exists when you hear people say Steph can't write complex horny male characters.Remember Glee for complex horny female characters. She can do it fine. Actually Reiko's pretty horny too come to think of it. Muertitos might actually be less horny than average
Ah that gag. It was funny here, funny when she did it again, but even crazier with the drunk invisible elves.
>>144604767A spell worthy of Roald Dahl.
>all thisKimberly doesn't know what type of comic she's in, does she?
>>144604791She clearly thinks she's a protagonist, so no.
Lafcadio absolutely does though
This page is the best example of 'Pure Steph Style' I've seen since 'bath with water and shampoo'.page from FSR. She's got a distinct vibe to her works
Lafcadio is a populist people pleaser and I love him for it.
Remember how I said "Semi" Retconned, in regards to the 2001-2002 run? This is on the other side of that coin, you'll have zero clue who Fatima is unless you'd read Issue 6 of the FSR run.So some parts of it are canon, and some parts absolutely aren't(the opening scene is re-used, they changed Sunflower quite a bit). So read it if you want I guess, https://desuarchive.org/co/thread/143918906/q#143922957
Damn I timed out my trip, that's how you know it's been too damn long. Also between this and Hetero-Dan I smell some personal issues
>>144604928>chubby slob genie girlHot
End of Story 6
Story 7 - Death Brews a Pale Ale
Circle 7 was doing that at the time right
End of Story 7
Story 8 - Introspective Interlude
Muertitos was briefly in the Top 10 highest daily readers of any webcomic at a couple points in 2005 and 2006.
>>144605438I swear dog!Honeo is reminding me of something specific, but I can't put my finger on what.
Seems like this show is a victim of...inflation
These stories are so short I accidentally did two of them at once. Turns out most of this was Story 9 A Timely Spoof.
End of Story 9Goddamn it did they build all the fresh nukes that helped end the world in 2031 too? What HASN'T Gokiburi and co been involved with in this universe yet?
>>144605576Presumably anything beneficial to society.
>>144605585I mean they created Reiko's flying suit while working at Matsubara Mechs. That's kinda cool.Guess the power went to the family's head
Story 10 - P.E.T.A.
>>144602323I have always thought Honeo was cute.
>>144605616House eggs are rich in essential proteins and insulations.
>>144605585If there was a contest for most damage done to the Stephverse, it would be the Gokiburi family.Well either them or James/Jennifer/JohnnyHobo Brighttower. They done erased ice cream from existence for a couple centuries until it got re-discovered by Johnny Rocksalt and used as cement for a bit.
Oh hey Temporary Earth. I think this would be in a lull where Tsugumi is still a normal school girl and Reiko is busy getting her pupils Cubby the Boy Bear and Antler Lass brutally murdered so not too much going on. Keep your eyes open just in case though
20 more terms(also con-temporary me 60 seconds ago)
I don't get the ref, but hey none of us got that ref last time about the little dutch boy in the lesbian bar and that ended up being really funny
>>144605711Just a Minority Report spoof, that's all.
oh crap political beliefs lets get out of this page pronto
Who else, but Lafcadio?
>>144603806Wait he’s real
She's drawn similarly to how Steph drew Marliyn Monroe back in Octopus Rex actually..Also look at the date, Creamy Beamy's started by this point(technically the first teasar was in July, but the first actual proper page that started the regular posting was on September 2nd)Not sure if that's also the case in universe, but eh
(does that girl behind her top right look kinda like Glee to anyone else)
>>144605878They definitely have similar hair.
(Steph's a pretty well known South Park fan, so I'd reckon she learned of him from there if nowhere else.)
Gotta pop out and tend to some shit quick like, just a reminder that replying and commenting to the posts and crap keeps me sane and engaged and also just generally sharing your thoughts on stuff is good
>>144605910Nothing unravels a hoax like someone too stupid to be fooled.
don't get the joke with this family, but eh
whoops wrong page my bad
>>144606075I think there's an anime called Excel Saga. I assume Steph mixed that with Paris Hilton.
>>144606100I don't think I'll ever have the reference depth to get every joke in these comics. And I love that
Anyway, I'm going until about 275 pages-ish or the rough equivalent to the nearest arc end. That's about the halfway point and it's easier to keep one thread alive overnight than two.
>>144606151Sci-Fi used to do a lot of anime huh. There’s VHS uploads of old anime stuff like Project A-Ko from Sci-Fi on ShivasThong’s YouTube channel. He’s the guy we found who says he has the missing Reiko pages. Nobody’s been able to contact him yet.Anyone have an Internet Archive account? Maybe Instagram? A couple people tried to contact them on YT and got nothing
(Assuming that's meant to be Shelburg, that's right outside of Salem, south of Portland)Also I'm like 80% Steph lived in Oregon at this point.
>>144606202Plus, you know, Spielberg. Because it's an ET parody.
Wait an Igor..don't tell me it's Gokiburi Labs AGAIN! WHAT IS IT WITH THAT FAMILY
>>144606218I figured that too, but then there's the waterfall(Shellburg Falls is a thing) and also I'm combining it with something upcoming in my mind.I could be wrong, I have zero clue where Steph lived at the time. I know she's been in Wisconsin for like a decade at this point now, but zero clue in 2005
Wisconsin is also where Cheesecake moved to in-universe.Anyone here from Wisconsin?
I'm half expecting a joke about how all the alien kids are gonna go hungry because Youko ate all their food
I mean that's better than Japan's in-universe record. The Mylarians and Semprini happened, what, a couple years ago?
>you qualify for the showkek
ok maybe I judged them too harshly
Mequon-Thiensville
>>144606502Wait wrong copy paste, End of Story 10.
Story 11 - Thanksgiving Hell House
Hey this girl looks kinda like Cheesecake(Also both the line and pose on that last bit is the same as that guy from the GPCB T-Shirt ad)
End of Story 11Also eeeek, the word left wing! Run before someone realizes the lesbian webcomic writer might not agree with them on everything
Story 12 - Tykes to Watch Out ForLast one of the night boys
Anyone can look like a European Peasent with the right dress. Why Cheesecake spent an entire arc looking like some Babushka Child instead of an albino horndog
Is human blood kosher? That's not a joke.If there's no jews here...is it Halal? What about lent can you have it then?
>>144606685Clara, the baby isn’t mine
Oh no no no not Professor Goki-oh it's just a board game. vhew
This was drawn less than two months after Marjorine aired, random fact
>I've been embalmed! :)Also they used arsenic back in the day, formaldehyde has only been used for about a century
Ok wow this exact joke was in IntraGalactic. Like exactly
>>144603028It's a symbiotic organism with a fungal and algae component! It lives in some of the harshest environments! Lichens motherfucker! They eat rocks and grow for centuries!
And that's all for tonight folks. Keep this thread alive til tomorrow and we can finish the rest of this comic, cleaning out this thread and starting a second one.Continue to reply and comment on stuff and all that, that's good. Keeps it bumpedIf you need something to hold you over til tomorrow, why not read the original Flying Suit Reiko Dot Com version of Muertitos? It has 6 issues for a total of 120 pageshttps://desuarchive.org/co/thread/143918906

I’m back. Just gotta deal with IRL shit. With ya’ll within an hour
>>144603727>>144603751I think that’s meant to be Keye Luke? Mr. Wing was his Gremlins character and final role(he also had a brother named Wing), he was probably the most well known Asian American actor of the 20th century. So they’ve got River Phoenix, Marilyn Monroe, Roscoe Arbuckle, Keye Luke, Lon Chaney Jr, and McCaulley Caulken(or maybe his aborted brother from his mom’s miscarriage). Not a bad cast. Especially once they eventually got Oedipus Rex himself
>>144606244This is Ishboo levels of tradition make-uppery.
Story 13 - A Very Special Mukade Family
Ok this is literally just Bugjamin Glee. Look at that face and hair and build.
End of Story 13, AND the end of this thread.Timed it perfectly this time. Last two years I threw in an extra page here and there for banners and stuff and screwed it. Come over to the next thread for the remaining 200 and some pages.>>144614202REST OF THE STORY: >>144614202

This thread is staying up as long as possible, both so there's room for comments and crap, and so anyone who wants to discuss the comic or author as a whole can do that before it's over in the other thread. We've got 149 posts to burn so no need to be stingy
