Anon's not wrong. Americano art school is a joke. I don't have the /ic/ image, but essentially they barely teach higher-tier art in the US, let alone basic ass drawing skills. They used to, but art became this "everything and anything is art" and it's all "subjective" drivel. It's why the East is kicking the West's ass because no one wants to watch fugly frumpy characters in woke preachy rainbow vomit propaganda anymore.

The problem is there is bound to be some cross pollination discussions, and apparently it's a big no-no to talk about the current state of affairs in Western animation and the bad ideas and initiatives behind them, especially since Hollywood and the animation and comic industry is ideologically captured and you're not allowed to point it out, discuss it, or try to change it because it's culture war, despite the fact it's the main reason for the decline. But I digress, gotta eat the slop and be happy with the rainbow cult media forever and ever now, because we can't talk about it, or it's culture war discussions. When anime provides far more variety in storytelling alone. One of the reasons /co/ is a slowly degrading crap-o-la hole, nothing to talk about but the same dead and dying industry. Comics in the West are dead, and animation is BARELY limping along.

It's cause artists aren't taken seriously as a career path. You say you wanna be an artist in America and people laugh at you and suggest you go into trades and doodle with nothing but a pencil. You say you wanna draw porn professionally in Japan and oba-san chains you to a desk until you can draw titties perfectly while blind.
>>
>>151183684
Henry Thurlow is an America animator wo has worked on famous anime. Americans can draw, they just go to Japan when they realize they'll have a better career there. This whole thread is fucking retarded

That's a two fold issue.
One: American animated and comic media never tried to go for a mature audience and when it did, it was never handled maturely or with an over sexualized, sometimes slapstick humor. The closest the US ever got was Ralph Bashki, and that was too vulgar at the time but it poked at America's race issues of the times. For comics, you had more variety, especially Alan Moore pushing boundaries, but the issue with comics in the US is they will never quite take remove the cultural yoke of being adjacent to capeshit slop and therefore childish. Meanwhile anime and manga is universally regarded even by plebian normies that it's more mature. But it's heavily cultural optics, and that the old comics industry is in the way of letting a new comics industry florusih. The only thing they've really tried is live action cape-shit and rebranding their old capeshit slop into rainbow cult capeshit.
Two: Because art has been degraded culturally extremely heavily. It was heavily seceded to the territory of the far-left, the main memes are that no one leaning right has ever been an artists, and if they were, they held no cultural footprint, and that you have to be gay, since some of the old classical masters were so the realm of art is in that camp now and forevermore. American's also have never really held art as a high point, despite artists like Rockafellar and J.C. Leyendecker and instead Andy Warhol being held up as the examples. Hell, the American writers that shaped much of fantasy are usually the laughing stocks in modernity, Robert E. Howard (Conan) and Lovecraft.

American cartoons and animators for that matter (specifically American, Europe doesn't really have this problem, such as the French) simply don't have the proper education to reach what was considered the golden age of animation during the mid 1900s. In fact we've never truly reached it, but came close.
Still, you do have parts of Europe that create astounding animations to the quality of a high budget movie anime.
The crazy thing is the skill does exist in America, but only as freelancers and indie animators, because art college is a scam and anyone worth their salt was self taught.
Hell you even have Americans making key animations for studios like Mappa.

Americans CAN draw, despite the crux of art college. The problem is there's no studio in the country that supports traditional animation, with the exception of fan funded indie animations.
>>
>>151185062
I mean, it's not wrong. Ask any Gen X'er, Boomer, Millennial, or Zoomers, and you'd probably get a consensus that anime/manga is more mature. Comic wise? Alan Moore isn't exactly mainstream, Bone (comic), Hellboy? You usually have to dig up some stuff most people haven't heard of to find other examples of good Western mature comics.I mean look at Princess Mononoke, Porko Rosso? And what is the equivalent there in the US? Prince of Eygpt?
>>
>>151185064
It doesn't help they don't teach art, there is not REAL financial end-goal for it, so you have to rely on eternal outliers, like gifted artists and nepo-babies to fill the gaps in the industry. The only decent animation schools really are maybe SCAD (I've heard it's been having major issues), CalArts, or Sheridan in Canada. The top Euro college being Goeblins I think. Art and animation is a rich nepo-baby passion, especially in this age. You hear about some of the older artists in the industry talk about how they got in doing inbetweens and little works and worked up from there, almost like an apprenticeship, which that is completely dead now and you have to have a fucking masters in Animation just to even attempt to get your foot in the door for a stable job. And that's not even getting started on the nuclear fallout of the comic industry.

Comics and animation did have a much more mature and risqué tone to them, however around the mid twentieth century things took a turn. I mean you always had capeshit and whacky animals but there was a counter balance with pulp horror and noir stuff that persisted for a while but ultimately superhero shit took precedence and gained far more popularity. And as for animation you have stuff like Betty Boop with her basically being a sex symbol and provocative (for the time) music being involved. It would be like if during an episode of say TLOK Korra stripped down into revealing underwear and started doing squats while rap music played. But over time things became more sanitized as children became the core demographic and the puritanical views for the time prevented any more experimental works for gaining much traction. However today there is a different sort of puritanical element but their main reasoning behind not going for more mature elements is that they believe it to be “objectification” or at least the is the excuse they use to obfuscate the actual reasoning. These are the cultural warriors which you spoke of before.
