Why is there so much revisionist history around CatDog and Doug? Millennials are now claiming it was the worst among all the NickToons and nobody liked it even though there's tons of evidence that shows they were immensely popular and probably still have fans to this day. Disney bought Doug because they thought it was gonna be their golden goose for their own network.
>>152625408They saw them.
>DougCultural zeitgeist changed a lot and a weird quirky loser isn't seen as cool anymore.>CatdogThat show was always regarded as pure shit, Nickelodeon just tried to push it because their retarded executives thought it'd be a huge hit and ordered way too many episodes up-front.
>>152625443Thrippy bippy
>>152625408>Millennials are now claiming it was the worst among all the NickToonsNot for Doug. Doug gets a lot of nostalgia. You've got to remember, when Nicktoons started it was just Ren & Stimpy, Rugrats, and Doug. All three of those are commonly beloved by millennials.
Nostalgia critic hates doug because he is doug
>>152625443This, I also doubt the people calling Doug shit are Millennials. Most of us remember it pretty fondly, not the best but far from the worst. CatDog was always hated.
>>152625443CatDog definitely pulled in the ratings even if they did overestimate it being the next Ren & Stimpy. It wasn't a flop of a show and definitely not widely hated among 90's kids like people pretend it was.
>>152625443>>152625477Anecdotal I know, but one time our teacher tried to play an episode of CatDog during some downtime we had and I remember the entire class fucking booing her for doing so. I didn't know a single person that liked it back then.
>>152625531Hahaha based class
>>152625443oh but if doug was a girl it would be praised now smfh
Doug more, newfag.
>>152625671What does the Doug button do?
>>152625723It Dougs, duh.
>>152625477>CatDog definitely pulled in the ratingsSource? I've always heard it did pretty bad in the ratings and Nick pushing it so hard was just them trying to force it into being a hit.
>>152625456You meant sippy bippy
I remembered liking the episode of CatDog where they ate at a buffet and got really fat and then sumo wrestled the buffet owner to get out of paying their bill
>>152625408A) stop saying 'millennial'B) Doug was amazing, CatDog was boring shit with really good and talented people behind it>>152625443You need to get off of /co/
>>152625408i'm 35, and i can say they were both quite popular. Disney's Doug had better production value, but also all the changes annoyed me, and I think that's why it dropped off.CatDog, however, surprises me on revisit. I and every other kid loved it back in the day, but as an adult... literally every episode is just about everyone abusing CatDog. Straight up! Their shitty blue tenant, the Greasers, that cat guy with the butt chin, that spanish bird girl; every single episode is them getting bullied to fucking hell and back! it's fucking stressful. i guess that's what life felt like as an anxious, bullied kid, but as a comfortable adult, i have to wonder how it got so popular.
>>152625723Context Sensitive action button since they crammed more then one little minigame onto the thing..
catdog was boring and not funnyi just remember being annoyed and finding it meanspirited whenever i watched it
>>152625723Excitement
>>152625723it makes you doug faster
Why do people consider CatDog meanspirited but not Rocko, Ed Edd n Eddy, or Angry Beavers? Personally as a kid, I found Rocko much more frustrating to watch than CatDog.
>>152627177Because you are a fag

>>152627177because the characters being mean in catdog almost never got their comeuppance
>>152625408In Doug's case, I think a lot of it was that the show became popular because it was a slice-of-life cartoon in a time when those weren't common but that popularity also meant Nick and other networks were also willing to try that concept out as well. The problem for Doug as a series though is that Doug is a pretty passive main character; stuff happens to him, he reacts but the situations largely resolve themselves. Other shows of that genre had much more proactive leads even if they stayed relatively grounded so kids could relate to the main characters. Those shows would also deal with more pressing issues than Doug as well. The Disney deal also kept the show running longer against shows that made it look stodgy and dated as well.So Doug is mostly a victim of his own success.
>>152625723PRESS DOUG TO START
>>152625477I loved CatDog. Later I was surprised to learn people hated it so much.
Say what you will about CatDog, but it had a great theme song:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTG6lbkEP_k
>>152627177Probably because those other three shows are funny while CatDog is boring, ugly, and mildly stressful. And look, man, I swear I'm not one to bitch about a cartoon not having a cast of nothing but wholesome little beans. But everybody in CatDog is just straight-up nasty. It's such a sleazy show, and not in a fun way like Aqua Teen. I dunno, it's hard to explain, it's just all-around unpleasant.
>>152625736>Goddammit, I pushed the Doug button! I fucking pushed it and he didn't Doug! This game is bullshit!
>>152626948kill yourself
>>152628274>Stressful ??? The fuck you doing getting stressed while watching cartoons
I bought the CatDog series set and I think Fanboy & Chumchum is the last show to have any actual Nickelodeon spirit in it.
>>152628555There's a chance I was being hyperbolic. I was also five when this show aired
>>152628463why is this making me laugh so hard
>>152625408That's not from millennials that's from people who grew up with them. Those shows aren't even from the same era. It's more revisionist to pretend they were good and that people are probably just aping some e-celeb
>>152625671FASTER
Doug was okay, it wasn't great by any means but there really wasn't anything like it at the time. A lot of zoomers don't realize how relatively 'new' cartoons like what aired on early Nickelodeon was compared to what people were familiar with.
Catdog was unusually cruel
>>152628644It's extremely relatable in that as a child you've probably done that exact thing with the 'A' button and Mario jumping, yet absolutely absurd by instead focusing on a DOUG button that makes Doug doug.
>>152628146>PRESS DOUG TO DOUG
>>152625408The reality is that none of the nicktoons between Rugrats and Spongebob were good. People use Catdog and Doug as scapegoats to avoid confronting the truth
>>152625408The Doug revisionism didn't really start until a tumblr blog started pushing the idea that Doug was actually an insane, selfish sociopath and that idea gained so much traction that it affected the public perception of the show for a bit. Eventually, with Doug being on Paramount+, people revisited the show and rediscovered that while it was basically the bland, milquetoast equivalent of today's Craig of the Creek, it was ultimately inoffensive with some solid moments. CatDog on the other hand was hated from the onset, and a lot of the meanspiritedness that people complain about was done purpose by protesting writers and artists who hated they were stuck on a show that wasn't the smash hit they were promised it'd be.
It's worth noting Doug aired back-to-back with Rugrats every weeknight around 7PM-ish for nearly 10 years (they'd occasionally move it by half an hour or swap what order they were). So obviously it was pulling rating. It wasn't until 2000 that it finally lost its primetime slot.
>>152629650The /co/ edits of "I HAVE TO STUDY WITH PATTY" predate Doug Funnie's Journal, don't they?
>>152625408>immensely popularCatdog came out the same year as Spongebob..Doug ultimately got mogged by Hey Arnold!.Both failed in comparison to the popularity and influence of Ren&Stimpy, which Nickelodeon did everything in their power to try and squelch that because of mad parents.
>>152625408The same reason people try pushing Ren & Stimpy as some saviour of cartoons. It was horrendous, unfunny lolrandumb edgy crap with an ugly artstyle.
>>152629960>It was horrendous, unfunny lolrandumb edgy crap with an ugly artstyle. And? What's your point?Your head was so up your ass you forgot to actually type something worthwhile.
ratings back in the day barely matter. the fuck else did we have to watch? it was either Catdog or some bullshit. course us kids were watching this. You didn't have much choice. Shit like this would never do well today. lots of old cartoons just lived off of no competition.
>>152625408Disneys really been sitting on Doug, he didn’t have an animated cameo in the chip and dale rescue rangers movie just stock art. I guess there’s still legal bullshit with paramount/nick
>>152625408Reminder that Roger is one of the best written antagonists in cartoon history. He wasn't just an unrepentant asshole who was only in the story to be a dick to the main character like antagonists in most cartoons. In fact there were many episodes where he was neutral to positive for most, if not the entirety, of the episode. Two examples off the top of my head are when he threw Doug a surprise party for his 1 year anniversary moving to town and when he saved Doug from getting his ass kicked by assistant principal Bone's nephew. He did end up fucking Patti though.
>>152625408Doug gets respect for being an early SoL cartoon. It may seem dated today but it was revolutionary for its time. Doug walked so Hey Arnold and As Told by Ginger could run.Catdog just isn’t good. And like >>152625443 said, Nickelodeon expected it to be their biggest hit and thought SpongeBob would bomb. The only memorable thing about Catdog was the theme song.
>>152625408Doug was at least successful enough that Disney bought it and made a Doug movie. The most Catdog got was a theatrical short.
>>152625408What would CatDoug be like as a show?
>>152625531fuck, did everyone else's elementary school teachers play normal cartoons in class? at my literal kike school where half the student body had athsma and peanuts were banned, they only ever put on pbs kids-tier content during downtime

>>152626959>>152627177For me, it's specifically that gang with the dogs that bully Cat and Dog. I find Winslow and Rancid Rabbit are fun while those pricks are just boring and suck
>>152625443I actually remember watching Cat Dog and absolutely hating that shit. Just boring af.
>>152625408Is Doug really hated? it just seems to be seen as bland at worst
>>152626457This is a bot post, note how it addresses the most-replied post as though it had said something off-topic or controversial.
>>152631632Funnier
>>152631759Cope and seethe, faggot
>>152625408>>152625671Millenials can't Doug
>>152633699The Doug button was literally made for Millennials. We grew up knowing how to Doug. It's only later generations that lost this art.
>>152625408I liked Doug, I think by memory people think it was a lame show just because Doug the protagonist was lame.
>>152625408I've literally never known someone that hated Doug, I've only seen people complain about it online while basically verbatim reciting some old tumblr post that was the definition of overthinking it. CatDog on the other hand I've never seen someone like in my entire life.
>>152631759I haven't even watched it.But "I didn't like it and I think it's bad" has zero relation to whether other people liked it or took inspiration from it. Rockos modern life even comments directly on this phenomenon, it could be a jar of spoiled mayo for two hours straight, but if it influenced people, then it influenced people. Your preferences have no bearing on that.
The problem with Doug is that Hey Arnold managed to adopt the same concept but improve it in almost every single metric. It's a hard to describe, but you can see it visually in how Nickelodeon represents themselves. When Doug shows up, it's because he's recognized as being one of their flagships. But as far as actual branding goes, you'll almost never see Doug and Arnold in the same picture. Nick goes with the Football head every time.
>>152625443This guy gets it. Even people working at Nickelodeon at the time and even working on the show knew it was terrible and that it was a huge waste of airspace and money. It was always hated by everyone.OP is just a retarded faggot who makes this thread to try and constantly push this historical revisionism that everyone loved the show, that it was a big hit, and then suddenly in the last few years, even though people haven't talked about CatDog in decades, a sudden wave of angry haters showed up to spread lies about it. He's mentally ill and should be given some Canadian Healthcare to end his suffering.
>>152634272Not just Hey Arnold. Recess, Pepper Anne, Weekenders, etc. Doug was basically the seed show for multiple other shows to take its core idea and do something interesting with it. So you look back and it doesn't really look all that remarkable in comparison, even though in the early 90s it was pretty much a one-of-a-kind show. Although I'd agree that out of all of the Doug-likes Hey Arnold was the best.
>>1526296414chan was making that joke before tumblr existed.
>>152625408Like, I liked both as a kid but looking back on it with my nostalgia diminished, I can see why everyone is uber harsh on both of those shows. Mainly because the personalities of the main characters and/or their circumstances get grating, with CatDog both getting treated like shit and Doug being such a passive wiener to the most benign sounding problems.
>>152634295> Although I'd agree that out of all of the Doug-likes Hey Arnold was the best.Well that and I'm specifically talking about Nicktoons. All the other ones you listed are Disney.
>>152629641>>152634303
>>152634272Other anons pointed out that Doug was initially somewhat novel for being a down to earth, slice of life cartoon at a time when there weren't many, if any, other cartoons like that. Then, like you pointed out, Hey Arnold comes around and does a similar format, but the characters are more dynamic and vibrant. Arnold is chill, but also quite cool in his own way. Episodes where Arnold is feeling nervous or lacking confidence have good reasons for that, while Doug is a dickless loser who is constantly overanalyzing the dumbest, most trivial shit and having gay little fantasies. And not that long after, we had years of shows that took Doug's formula and have infinitely more success. As Told By Ginger was more grounded and relatable. Recess was more kid friendly, but had deeper characters, compared to Doug. Weekenders, Pepper Anne, Ed, Edd, & Eddy, Braceface, Proud Family, What's With Andy, etc. Compared to all the competition, what does Doug, as a show, even have to offer?
Cat Dog is one of those shows thats ao bad in a way thats hard to really nail down that makes you question how something like it could even exist. How you can make the main characters unlikeable but also make the characters bullying them even more grating and unlikeable.
>>152634428That one, I give some leeway because it’s pretty evident in every episode the reason the main characters are the way they are is because the world sees them as easy targets, and they’re just coping in the only ways they know how, with Dog going into derpy denial and hedonism, and Cat retreating into sarcasm and cynicism. I get the metaphor and idea, that despite being total opposite their brothers literally stuck with one another fighting against society doing everything it can to crush them underfoot, but it does get tiring when they basically have to just put up with life over the few times the two ever punch back against society. Their TV movie was probably one of their best episodes, and even then it was only okay.
>>152634428I will never forget the episode where all the people who regularly bullied CatDog got together after finding out that CatDog was missing, had a sad singalong where they claimed to miss CatDog that CatDog actually heard and were moved to tears by...then clarified that they missed CatDog because they missed ruining their lives and beating the shit out of them.It takes a special kind of sociopath to think that kind of emotional manipulation is funny.
>>152634505You basically just described why the monster truck episode is almost universally regarded as one of the best. Instead of everyone getting away with shitting on CatDog, CatDog actually pushes back and beats the absolute shit out of everyone else. The episode where everyone thinks the apocalypse is happening is also regarded as one of the better ones, and wouldn't you know it, it's an episode where everyone just stops shitting on CatDog because they don't see a point in it with the world ending. The core premise of "CatDog get absolutely shit on by everyone and everything and just passively take their lumps even when they were doing nothing or even going out of their way to be nice" was shit.
>>152634382I still won't forget that hay Arnold have animated the fall of Saigon for a kids Christmas special
>>152625408Catdog was one of the most vile and meanspirited cartoons ever made. Pic related was how it made me feel as a kid every time I was stupid or bored enough to give it another try.
>>152630931>He did end up fucking Patti though.Who? Dough? Roger? Jim?
>>152625408Catdog within 5 min of the first epasoide that was shown after the kids awards have killed.my love of the nick.netwotk and hated cartoons untill my friend told me to watch dragonball z so yes catdog is so bad it lead me down the rabbit hole of weeb shit and ruined.my life
>>152634559Yeah, I never got why most of the episodes had the main characters just put up with that shit. Seemed pretty obvious from the theme song the general motif of the show was “brothers against the world” which would naturally mean sticking up for themselves, not just taking it like Doug.
>>152625443This. Everyone liked Doug. The character is just a punching bag, though in reality, the world of Doug was pretty unique and alot of characters are memorable. Catdog was just an abomination. Even as a kid I disliked it. Every scene either had trash, or was covered in trash so it always looked filthy and depressing.
>>152634675Yeah, even though Doug himself was probably the worst part of the show the quirkiness of everything else was really fun to watch. Everyone still remembers Mr. Dink and the weird music for a reason. And he wasn't bad enough to make the show itself a miserable watch, hell there were even a lot of later episodes where everyone else was acting like a bitch and Doug was the one that did shit. CatDog in comparison is just watching two brothers get beat up over and over for 99/100 episodes.
>>152625658You're basically describing as told by ginger
I never heard that about Doug but I remember CatDog being a constant whipping boy.
>>152633410Doug Funnier?
