That's what happens on a website where everyone is a hateful asshole who doesn't like anything. Maybe try actually having a genuine discussion about something you enjoy, and the board won't be so fucking dead. But oh wait, you literally can't because enjoying media is cringe and woke. Congrats, this is what the hobby board for a dying industry looks like.

4chan is dying because it doesn't foster community and gatekeep undesirables. The site is run by people who are proven from the hack to relish the idea of tormenting random anons and shitting up the site. The same people who thought /qa/ and wojak spam was funny until they went after a faggot board, then deleted it and got hacked by those same schizoids.

4chan is decaying in general.
It's honestly better to look for niche forums at this point for discussion online. Even though most of those sites mods are power hungry.
The internet just sucks too much now.

There are so many compounding factors as to why this board it's dead, it's very depressing to think about. But I don't want /co/ to go away. I like 4chan and /co/. I remember back in the character tournaments (Ms./co/, Mr./co/, etc) there was much less voting than in the previous years. I think it was the captcha. Depending on your provider it almost entirely blocked mobile posting, and let's be real not everyone wants to sit at the desktop to post. Good. Mobile posting sucks. If you go onto basically any altchan the quality of discussion almost immediately becomes a thousand times better because most people on those websites are posting on their computers, not their cell phones.
>>
The ban on posts from (most) cell carriers really was a double edged sword because it stemmed a lot of the low-effort shitposting, but the surviving shitposters are much more high-effort schizos who are better at driving people away.

>Is a reduction in shitposting really worth losing so much activity though
Yes. Quality > Quantity any day of the week. You should be able to see this firsthand with the torrent of AI slop washing over the internet.

>Is 4chan really fun anymore when you take the chaos out of it?
You're falling into the same false dichotomy fallacy that people have been doing for years. Shitposting =/= board culture. Board culture requires high quality posters to survive. Shitposting erodes board culture and undermines post quality. 4chan does not need to be an ocean of piss to be able to have genuine, fun discussion away from censorship, cliques, and SocJus retards.
>>
>>152670302
It was a mixture of the captcha changes and the needing a google account to vote these last two years. Besides that yes I do agree. I like this place, as shit as it can be sometimes. You just need to find a good thread every now and then.
>>
>>152670554
I guess. I can't really argue with you there, part of me just feels like there were good posters lost too, surely most phoneposters couldn't have been that way, right?
>>152670559
Agreed. I don't think it's all lost yet.
>>
>>152669708
>The internet just sucks too much now.

Yeah the net is so sterile now. It's hard to find sites that foster good discussions. Everything is botted and astroturfed to hell, sites like Reddit have restrictive rules and powertripping jannies with an agenda, social media isn't meant to foster discussions and the users are mostly braindead anyway, basically indistinguishable from the many bots that infest those sites. 4chan is unironically one of the best places to engage in a free exchange of ideas with both likeminded and differing viewpoints, which is pretty sad.
>>
>>152670302
What's wrong with captcha?
>>
I used to be a lot more active on /co/ around two years ago, only just recently started poking my head around again and thought I was going crazy because everything felt so inactive. Went to a thread and the first reply was loli art that the jannies never removed, even hours after the thread was posted. Saw a lot more low quality OPs than I remember there being. Felt disheartening since I despise social media and don't want to go there to discuss cartoons, especially since every site is filled with kids who are very loud and annoying.

Even then I've still come across a few threads that were a lot of fun, for things I wouldn't have expected. Whatever Happened to Robot Jones of all shows has had a handful of threads that have hit bump limit, with a healthy mix of shitposting, discussion, and even OC from drawfags. /co/ may be dying, but it's not dead yet, and I will always feel at home no matter how bad things get.
>>
>>152669605
It's mostly bots now even on /co/. Some bought a pass or scammed one via a stolen credit card or discordjanny's giving them out to stifle threads.
>>
>>152670302
>Depending on your provider it almost entirely blocked mobile posting, and let's be real not everyone wants to sit at the desktop to post.
Not my problem, death to mobileposters.
>>
>>152670319
Absolute?
All-ages stuff tends to get solid threads as well though not guaranteed
>>
>>152669635
Hmmm, I dunno about that, I still enjoy plenty of stuff; lots of current video games, anime, manga, novels, the only current stuff I generally don't enjoy are music (current music is literally 99.99% shit, it's so bad that AIslop is topping the streaming charts) and cartoons (except some stuff like Primal, Smiling Friends, and CSE, but those are basically ending or dead).
The issue is that I just don't have much reason to post here nowadays because there aren't many cartoons or comics I'm interested in nowadays, I'm only here now because of the recent Smiling Friends announcement.
Comics and cartoons just aren't really *for* me anymore, so I see no reason to engage with them.

It's not just /co/, it's every board. I browsed /tv/ the other weekend and it shocked me to see how slow it was. Almost as slow as /co/. Everything with the exception of a couple of boards (like /v/) feels like it's on Euro timezone hours now, except for the Euro hours, which are straight-up dead. One sobering effect of this which has become apparent over the last few years (I'm sure people here will agree) is how you'll find yourself in a discussion about something and realize that the anons you're talking to seem to be the same ones you had been talking to days or weeks or months before. It's usually not bad enough that it's worth interrupting the thread to make a comment about it, because if you're wrong you look like a schizo, but if you're right... why spoil the illusion of a fresh conversation? Sometimes it can even be oddly comforting. Nice to see your weird internet pen-pals are still alive and kicking, you know. Still it gives me pause when I encounter it, and it makes me wonder how often others have come to that same realization while talking to me. This entire site feels more and more like a virtual retirement home for jaded millennials who don't fit in anywhere else or who simply hate social media and prefer anonymity. That's not such a bad thing, but it sure does feel more lonely than it used to and there's no reason to assume that it won't get lonelier from here.

It's odd to see graphs like this and think that there's 1/4 as much activity on here each day as there used to be, because maybe it's just rose-tinted goggles but it generally feels like there's even less than that.
>>
>>152670856
/tv/ and /co/ are generally dead, for much the same reason.
Current TV and current cartoons are both kind of shitty, and the amount being made is downright anemic compared to even just a decade ago, so you end up with the most active discussions on these boards being culture war shit surrounding the industries and the occasional perma-generals for the few things people still care about (ASoIaF and related properties on /tv/, TADC/Hazbin and Death Battle on /co/).

But you are right about there being a lot of discussion with the same anons, and this is largely because the "old internet" no longer gets young blood, all the young people are content with AI and whatever the algorithm on TikTok feeds them, this just ends up more pronounced with /co/ since cartoons in general attract a lot of autistic teenagers, and that cohort used to make up a significant proportion of /co/ posters.
>>
>>152669605
To be honest I go to boards where my interests align at the time. If I'm obsessing over an anime or manga, I hang around on /a/ more. If it's a cartoon or comic series, I'm here on /co/. If it's a video game then /v/ (or other more specialized boards), /m/ if it's a mecha series, and so on.

Aside from Hazbin, there really hasn't been much /co/ material that interests me for a while.
>>
>>152670656
Anything not sterile is sunk in a culture of being maximally hostile to anyone who tries to do or talk about anything because that's seen as the only way to prevent being sterilized. There's only extruded industrial paste or crab bucket/tall poppy culture.

It's nice to have the occasional thread to air out the many grievances that come with this site's decline. I sometimes wish there was a place to discuss these things in depth without a mod Sword of Damocles hanging overhead to smite the thread right in the middle of the discussion, even if there is a reason that spaces for meta discussion are taken out back after what happened with /qa/. Things don't need to be so intentionally obfuscated though. Taking away the IP counter is one example- we all know the site's metrics are lower, why try to hide it? We can all tell! It's like a balding guy getting Turkish hair plugs.

On /co/ it's especially bad because a lot of the same anons post the exact same ritual threads week after week. Those Tushy Tuesday threads for instance are maybe 5 guys at best dumping the same images time after time. I've also noticed an explosion of weird ERP posting that I hope is just bots because it doesn't have a human speech cadence.

It's not at first, but then it soon becomes a general, and then you get all the usual suspects that can be expected to spoil both meta threads and general threads. It's probably for the best to have it be an informal thing that crops up out of the blue.

Captchas are never going to go away because they're the only bulwark against rampant bot spam from mega-autists.
Even now, the only reason 4chan's captcha is the way it is is because it was specifically implemented to stop the autistic furry from /v/ who set up an entire proxy site and was using it to spam CP on residential IPs all over the site for at least the last 2-3 years.
You are never going back to a captcha-less internet unless you want to create an account tied to your real identity, that's just the simple fact of life, and it's largely because some autists just can't control their autism.
>>
>>152669902
This. There are plenty of reasons why this site has a god-awful community, but the majority of it comes down to the site being openly hostile to even posting at all. All this effort just to post a reaction image shitpost? Yeah, I don't think so. It's fair to say that the site's decaying setup is the reason that 4chan has so actively lost users.

Here's a confession. This site's so dead that sometimes I post intentionally bullshit obvious retard-tier information and then even respond to myself calling myself a retard just to get other anons to jump in and start some kind of conversation about an actually interesting topic.
>>
>>152671029
Reminder that /qa/ was intentionally gutted to encourage shitposting so that it drowned out all meta discussion and user participation in the site activities.
Of course that shitposting was what brought in the soijakkers. And instead of stamping them out we got them watering until they made Sharty, which led to the hack since Rapeape & co would not update exploits which then dropped posts here by 25%.
A huge reason for 4chan decline is moderators did not want to hear criticism or put in effort, so now the remaining jannies have to put in more effort lol
>>
>>152671105
Plus, the grim reality is that AI and bot tech are getting so advanced that even captcha can't stop them. Hell you might be a fucking robot and I'd have no way of knowing.

>>
>>152669682
I'm still convinced that mods intentionally let /qa/ turn to total shit so they could have an excuse to close down the one board where anons could criticize them within the rules, and didn't think about the consequences of supporting the growth of a schizo culture.
>>
