A little late to the party but what's the general consensus on the movie? I though the animation was gorgeous but wasn't a fan of Airbender Broly.
>>153254311Bryke are really similar to those dime-a-dozen anime writers who make anime originals that fall apart on act 3. They run on vibes and what they think seems cool, shooting from the hip and just running with it
The animation is excellent, genuinely one of the best looking things to come out of the West in a long time - it is then basically wasted on everything else.- The original voice actors were replaced with noticeably poor diversity replacements. Considering how they are both available and all capable of returning to their roles, as well as a core component of what defined their characters, this is basically unforgivable. There's no excuse, Paramount are either just garden variety white-haters, or simply needed a reason to not pay voice actors a fair wage for reprising a legacy role.- It's a boring mcguffin quest of a plot, generic and uninteresting. Things happen that are stupid because there's a magical excuse for it.- Bad lore/worldbuilding that fails to avoid cheapening the world, but this is par for the course at this point. Everything "added" to ATLA seems to just take away. - Inconsistencies with established worldbuilding, but again this seems to just be the standard at this point, people love going into this "beloved" franchise and then immediately ignoring the sanctity of any established continuity.- Aang is, essentially, a bumbling idiot despite the fact we know he was capable and resourceful as a child. In his prime, he would be basically Superman. He's not going to have trouble dealing with a bunch of normal humans nor would pacifism make him incapable of stopping them. Other characters are similarly lobotomised despite being obviously wiser now - the plot can't be bothered to justify a strong opposing antagonist so just settles for making the protagonists stupid. It's just another thing that fails to understand what makes ATLA good or can see any means of revisiting the story in a way that recontextualises anything meaningfully, let alone doing so in a way that isn't actively damaging something special about the original. It's a modern sequel. If not for the production quality, it would be barely worth a mention.
>>153254311I came back to /co/ today for the first time in years because I heard about the avatar leak. Around 2014/2015 I fantasized so much about continuing the series. I was thrilled to hear about paramount picking it up a few years ago after people realized how many people still adored avatar when Netflix started streaming the series during covid. After hearing about how paramount handled the leak and pics from the new series, I am incredibly disappointed but not surprised. I will be watching the movie that got leaked. I feel horrible for the animators that put their souls into the movie, just to have it leaked and dropped from a theatrical release. The new series looks like it’s doing way too much. Post apocalyptic world is so over done. Late 20th century earth bender would have been so much better.
>>153254674Animation's more a mixed bag, imo. It's decent in some parts, but others make it clear why it was shunted onto streaming as what makes a TV show work doesn't really translate into theatrical results. Most TV-to-Movie adaptations have that problem. As for>The original voice actors were replaced with noticeably poor diversity replacements. Considering how they are both available and all capable of returning to their roles, as well as a core component of what defined their characters, this is basically unforgivable. There's no excuse, Paramount are either just garden variety white-haters, or simply needed a reason to not pay voice actors a fair wage for reprising a legacy role.I am convinced it's them trying to pander to the DEI crowd. Which would be fine, but a little annoying, if they didn't simply think "All Asians look alike" when recasting Zuko, the other Fire Nation individuals or the Cabbage Merchant (seriously, why wasn't James Sie brought back at least?). And tried a little harder with the rest of the picks. Everything else is part and parcel for the franchise after the original series ended.I do have to wonder something about the casting though. Is this bad, or worse than the casting in the live-action movie? Because honestly, I think that might be MORE offensive in how incompetent that was.
Muscle mommy Toph was the best thing to come out of this movie
>>153254311Meh story. Voice changes may take some getting used to but the characters are older so whatever. Animation is fantastic but its Flying Bark so that was a given
>>153254856Now that's just Rori from DKRPG
>>153254916How is it a given? Nobody knows who Flying Bark is, unless you work in the creative industry in Sydney, so I’m assuming you’re a Flying Bark employee.Flying Bark is literally not known for anything. And also, something like 10 different studios worked on this, Flying Bark mostly helped with the 3DCG.
>>153254856Everyone is fucking yolked in this movie.
>>153255428Katara is pretty normal looking. But yeah the rest of the gaang got /fit/
>no suki>no iroh>aang keeps taking hits (he dominated every fight he was in in atla) and only wins because of dude sex machina>barely any interaction from team avatarIt's visually great, extremely so, but hype and aura can only take you so far.You know, it reminds me of jjk in that regard.
>>153255749>no suki>irohI mean technically both pop up in the credits, but the Suki erasure is pretty weird.
>>153254472This is like a shonen filler movie so your comparison doesn’t
>>153254472>>153256116*doesn’t fit
>>153255749I don't like JJK but I think it's ok if people watch a show just for the hype and aura tiktok friendly action scenes. I've watched some things purely for the spectacle. It's a problem when something like that is seen as like actually higher level than it is, when so much of it runs cold with that made-by-committee-checklist feel
>>153254311animation hard carriesplot is fine, good enough and fun enough
>>153256116>set up ideas and situations that seem cool or interesting when introduced>things feel stupid and start crumbling apart hard in the last third, the most difficult part to pull off right, and landing the finish line with good satisfying execution becomes a distant dreamA pattern that pummeled LoK and many animated series
Funny how this movie is causing some huge powerscaling ware on twitter between Korra and Aang.
>>153256317But Lok is not like that, Lok just swings up and down in quality, never passing a certain standard and in terms of original anime there are very few with that many episodes(and those are usually pretty good) as lok. Also it’s not just Bryke, Dante screwed up as well.
>>153256364Korrafags need a win after being Avatars punching bag for a decade and if it means treating Aang jobbing twice as actual writing and not so the plot can move forward then so be it
>>153256459LoK's sectioned arcs where the 4 main villains each got 1 season for their story and were not in contact with each other follow the failure of follow through after a cool idea brought in interest. S1 and S4 as the most clear examples
So is the implication that benders get weaker over time? Because this dude was going full DBZ on everyone. Meanwhile in Korra the benders are more precise but seem overall weaker.
>>153256550S2 was just shit from the start up until the end
the movie needed more katara's tummy and legs shots
>>153256609Seriously everyone drooling over Toph but I wanted more Katara.
Take this with a grain of salt but apparently Paramount was NOT in fact hacked. The movie being leaked early was the fault of some dumb employee.
>>153256659How do you "accidently" send out a full movie?
>>153256659The "it only took one idiot" thing about this reminds me of that one animated short where one single man keeps spreading a deadly toxin unintentionally
>>153254472I saw that Christopher Yost was the co-writer so it's not all Brykes fault
This is when Lin was conceived.
>>153256774I'm assuming Sokka and Suki simply broke up before the movie takes place
>>153254311why are fans trying to convince that batista can fucking act?
>>153256253Wasn't this just a fun reunion movie? If it was about the founding of Republic City or Aang's marriage drama it'd be a problem
>>153256850I haven't seen a single person say this. In fact nobody even seems to care about Batista, more focus is on how off the main cast sounds.
>>153256700I know that one. Hated it.
>>153256317>and many animated seriesand many live action series as well. it’s a huge deal for cartoons since in his prime he and his buddy were two of the extremely few people in the western animation capable of writing a serious series that stays good up until the end
>>153256793That's the implication I'm getting. Sokka was all over her in the final season and in the comics. Here he doesn't even mention her and when she pops up in the credits they're never together.
>>153256879I'm not referencing the quality of this movie in that post, just thinking about how jjk got overhyped for so long because people are losing their grip on how to place different things onto different levels
>>153256879Was it a fun reunion? They had a moment when when they nursed Toga and at camp after they fucking died, but other then that they barely interacted.
No one gives a fuck about Suki, the main cast is the team avatar. Suki would only bloat the budget.
At least their relationship worked in this. I think the issue with the original was that Aang was simply too childish so the romance wasn't really believable. But now he's a bald chad.
>>153256950Oh, sure. The Solo Leveling experience.
>>153256774No it was right after this
Did uh, did any of these guys have a name?I liked the yuyan archer girl, she had an azula vibe going on. Pseudo firebending and everything.

>>153254674>Bad lore/worldbuildingI try to give them the benefit by treating this movie like one of those shonen anime movies where it clearly isn't canon, just a side story meant to be enjoyed, but they insist on treating it as a bridge to korra. It's odd that they cant introduce new lore to avatar that fits the tone of the original show, and that it feels so fanfiction-ish.And it's silly watching aang in his prime fumble throughout the movie because not only should he be much stronger than the child version of the main series but also wiser, but he was as naive as a child throughout and had to learn lessons even the kid him would've already known>>153254816The thing I don't get is why they replaced Dante as zuko's VA. Hes asian, but not Japanese enough to play Japanese-inspired fantasy race. But the new guy oddly enough is Korean? But the new guy is currently a trending actor, so it feels like it was just an executive choice to pick a guy who was more "mainstream" than someone that the fans actually like. But at the same time they fell in line to the new "characters can only be voiced by their race"
>>153257556yeah that part is retarded.
Alan we are SOOO fucked
>>153254674>The original voice actors were replaced with noticeably poor diversity replacements. Considering how they are both available and all capable of returning to their roles, as well as a core component of what defined their characters, this is basically unforgivable. There's no excuseThis is partly the case. It most certainly is so with Mae Whittman, as she's still very active in voice acting. It's definitely odd in the case of Dante Basco, as he was one of the few asians from the original cast. But with Aang, Toph and Sokka's VAs, it was absolutely unavoidable as all three have long since retired from the entertainment industry so they had to be recast.
>>153257208Korra would end up with her butthole filled with Taga’s cum.
>>153254674Animation is great but it was clearly modeled after Dragon Ball, not Avatar - the lack of martial arts is jarring and telling. They did no research.
>>153254311I refuse to support it because of how they screwed over the original voice cast for inherently objectively racist reasons.
>>153257895>But with Aang, Toph and Sokka's VAs, it was absolutely unavoidable as all three have long since retired from the entertainment industry so they had to be recast. All of three of them wanted to come back, and jack desenna absolutely is still active. Zach had retired from VA work but a fan spoke to him in the con scene, which zach is now really active in. allegedly he wanted to come back for aang again barring a few other projects he was working on. and it's become abundantly clear mae stepped aside for PR reasons.
>>153257895Both Jack desena and jessie flower are still active voice actors, and jessie said she'd love to do toph again. Jack is busy with the dragon prince i suppose.
>>153257895>But with Aang, Toph and Sokka's VAs, it was absolutely unavoidable as all three have long since retired from the entertainment industryYou're straight up making shit up. Sokka's VA has work as recently released as last year and has more releases slated for the future including reprising his role in Dragon Prince, pretty sure he would have reprised Sokka for one movie considering he's doing the same thing for another movie that hasn't even come out yet.Toph's VA doesn't work as much anymore but like Sokka's VA has done work within the last year (and this movie was in production longer than a year). Not only that but one of her voles was for a fucking gacha game, I highly doubt she's only taking really important roles that speak to her or some shit, it's probably just she doesn't really need the money but again, I'm sure she would have done 1 movie if the price was right.Aang's voice actor would also probably do the role if asked even though he doesn't do much voice work. He likely doesn't do much voice work moreso because he can't get work anymore because unlike the rest of the cast he doesn't have an established career as a VA, he was a child star. Its clear this was done for PR reasons and MAYBE price reasons. None of this is even touching the reality that many of them already came back and played their characters as adults in Korra with only Aang being a new actor and they didn't ask him to come back either. If cowards want to do this racist casting shit they should do it proudly, they should disown the past work as unacceptable because if you won't its clear this is about pandering, money and imaginary woke points moreso than making good art. None of them will though because they want to have their cake and eat it too. They want to still do their Toph voice impressions on Fiver while also not calling out the casting director as passing on hiring them because of their races.
>>153257895>have long since retired from the entertainment industryUh-huh.
I'm a simple man. I want ONE thing from the animation industry. I want a good looking 2D action cartoon. I'm at the point where I've even lowered by standards for writing and storytelling, literally just dial back the crappy romance drama and I'm happy. For whatever reason, a good looking action cartoon is hard to come by. If it's not from Genndy Tartakovsky then it's quietly airing on a streaming service and won't get recognition until it's about to end, and if it's not that then it's an occasional 2 minute gag from Gumball or Teen Titans Go. I thought them changing the voice actors was stupid, and I've watched every clip I've seen on mute (because I've only seen it on twitter where every video starts off muted, and blueboard 4chan where there's no audio), but it's got the one thing I constantly ask for; great fight scenes, so wherever it officially drops on, I'll watch.
>>153257663kek>>1532543116/10, would be 7 if the original voice actors were back
I was a little skeptical to believe the whole VA shit but I guess this AMA confirmed it. Even if one or two of the original VAs weren't available they didn't even consider the rest because they wanted "authentic" casting. This is so hilariously racist it borders on comedy. Also funny how this only works one way too.Glad I pirated it.
quite literally nothing in the series has been decent since the original and that doesn't change here
>>153257666>But at the same time they fell in line to the new "characters can only be voiced by their race"That's the problem though, they didn't. Toph is the only Asian in the film to be voiced by someone of their intended race, Zuko's supposed to be Japanese-based like the rest of the Fire Nation. By that logic, it should be a Japanese-American actor in the role, not Invincible. But I assume, like Bautista's casting, Yeun was brought in for name value (would also explain why Ken Jeong was cast as the cabbage merchant too).Like I said, by trying to fix the problem, they made it worse.

Still kind of confused on how big of a timeskip it is after the end of ATLA and this movie. How many years after the ending of ATLA and how old is Team Avatar in this movie?
>>153258753Ah, makes a little more sense. Still bothers me they just didn't get Dante back. But I'm guessing name recognition was more in their minds.
yes, the movie is horseshitps: I watched it 3 times already, I can't stop.slop slop slop slopl slop
>>153258878I believe they look 20/25?
>>153258883it does seem weird to replace dante with yuen who is presumably the most expensive one if he got the 'and' when they listed the stars on the title cards
>>153258102getting worked up about this is not worth it anymore, it's over. The movie was redubbed and leaked before release, all companies will continue diversity casting and avatar is probably finished after this, seven havens could potentially be cancelled
Stop looking at the leaks>"If you want to respect the creators and respect the cast and respect me, and respect the art, then stop sharing it," said Toph voice actress Michaela Jill Murphy about The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender leaks.
>>153258992I'm not worked up at all, if anything made me mad when making that post its that the guy I was responding to was straight up lying to make his point. That does make me mad when people do it in any conversation. I also disagree, I actually feel like we're already seeing push back on this and some VAs are starting to realize it actually makes it much harder for them to get work, including people in the groups that were intended to be helped by this attitude. I have no issue calling out a liar and pointing out why this whole situation is stupid because I actually think realistically over time people are going to move away from being so stringent in matching this shit because it also just becomes less and less viable as time goes on.
>>153259007She's not even involved in the movie, how is it disrespectful to her? She's just saying this because the entire English VA industry is a clique and you have to play along or you get blacklisted.

>>153259007But she's not on the cast, she was the wrong race/ethnicity/nationality/made up collection of people who are from the same general continental plate. Also I'm going to have to ask she stop doing the Toph voice on site like Cameo, she's not the right race/ethnicity/nationality/made up collection of people who are from the same general continental plate to be doing the Toph voice.
Could a social media shitstorm force Paramount to rerecord original VAs for the October release?

>>153256993
>>153259113No, this leak already cost them. They aren't going to waste money recording lines again even though Aang is really the only one with a good chunk of dialogue. Also like the anon above me said American VA is a well known clique. Any old VA who tries to reprise their role is going to get treated like that Bleach incident and get dragged through the mud by other VAs for virtue signaling points..
>>153259113No way in hell would any modern company want POC erasure on their list of sins They were already willing to recast everyone for DEI brownie points, theyd never revert that after they already spent money on it
Is there a chance for a second movie or will this leak kill it? It was already bad enough canceling the theatrical release
I think Katara should have been pregnant. and Sokka and Toph should of had sex so Toph also got pregnant (but didnt tell Sokka).
