What is their 2D peak?

Aladdin.

Other movies did things better than Aladdin. But I am legit, hard pressed to think of a flaw in Aladdin. Lion King suffers from a weak third act, Hunchback has tonal inconsistencies, but Aladdin is just a great film through and through.

Beauty and the Beast too, maybe.

Katzenberg and Eisner changed everything for them upon arriving in late 1984 (when Black Cauldron was almost finished after being in production for years)

Tarzan looks more impressive but Lilo and Stich has the advantage of having good writing
>>

That's specifically the Disney Renaissance period that started with "The Little Mermaid" in '89 to "Tarzan" in '99 before the hard pivot to computer animation. "Rescuers Down Under" sometimes doesn't get counted because the Disney-adults don't remember it as well and write it off as a project that happened to be released during this timeframe, but the animation was good and congruent with the style of the other films. They're also the type to count "Toy Story" with some strained logic so take that for what you will.

Mulan/Lilo & Stitch are really good, thanks to Chris Sanders

Is no one gonna bring up treasure planet or am I the only one who thinks that was their peak?
>>
>>153430227
So peak it basically spelled the d- oh you already know the story. The quality of the movie isn't at all to blame, but it wasn't good enough to do well.

It really is one of Disney Feature Animation's best. Definitely the strongest from their Renaissance era. It's got the humour, it's got the heart, that final act has some crazy stakes, and the whole thing's just gorgeous visually. I'm always down for a rewatch whenever it's proposed.

It's either Sleeping Beauty or one of the later films like Atlantis/Lilo/Treasure Planet is I'm judging just for the animation. It's a shame they only started cathing up to Sleeping Beauty's level when they squashed the 2D animation completely
>inb4 there was some CG work
all the way back in Cauldron and Basil they did that and I don't care, it's still 2D

>>153426603
I like lilo and stitch a little more because it has a but more emotional depth, but I agree that Aladdin is pretty solid
>>
>>153430169
villian was kinda boring and I didn't like that comedy characters that much. I wish the film took it self more seriously
>>
>>153430227
Hidden gem, not their peak. It was quite literally their end lol
>>
>>153426603
Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and Beauty and the Beast were all solid fucking films in craft, story, acting, music, etc. It was before Disney started leaning HARD into CGI and pop musicians writing songs.
>>
>>153426673
Black Cauldron was fucking cool and I'm disappointed we never got more dark films for the 11+ crowd.

You could argue that Jafar had kind of a weak presence in the movie.
>>
>>153433662
NTA, but I'd be interested in hearing your arguments.
He was pretty integral to the plot throughout.
- He was the reason Aladdin found the lamp.
- He tries to marry Jasmine and is only thwarted when Aladdin returns posing as a prince.
- He, in turn, thwarts Aladdin's seductive attempts by throwing him in the ocean
- He steals the lamp and makes himself the Sultan, then a poweful sorcerer, then undoes himself by turning himself into a genie.

Kind of hard to see that as a "weak presence".
