Read Bratpack, ngl this feels like what Ennis wanted to do with the Boys but more concise and to the point.

Does this deal with the military-industrial complex?

to be fair, aside edgyshit, it has nothing to doo with Ennis style.

Did Ennis really? Vought do have the makings of a military contractor but they were a private company rather than a government contractor.
>>153947628
im more referring to it being a deconstruction of superheroes by way of comparison to celebrities and their behaviors like alcoholism, obsessive beauty standards and deviant behavior like Mink's pedastry. Vought's more blatant but Bratpack does the corpo cynic shit as well as well

Kind of
Goon starts of whacky sort of episodic adventures

At some point the story starts getting traction, and that's when the story gets good. The original run ends on a really good note, but Eric brought it back and it hasn't been as good.

And that's the first issue! What did you think? Ngl I really loved them tying in Jason Todd's hotline into this, it adds a certain bit of weight with how things in comics go.
>>
>>153948056
Dr. Blasphemy is such a good design too bad Brat Pack had no legs outside of it's elevator pitch, there aren't many classic villains from independent comics.

>>153948599
nice dubs but how can you say that when 9-Jack-9 exists???
>>
>>153948283
My biggest problem for the series is this , the Jason Todd's plotline got sidelined and when most interesting it get third issue happened.
>>
>>153948599
>>153948645
Both are interesting villains stuck in mediocre comics.
>>
>>153948283
I feel like I'd enjoy it more if I could tell what the fuck was happening. This is not a good usage of the white and black color palette
>>
>>153948736
Yeah, he doesn't get to do much. I guess he only ends up being here to hint at the maximortal cell transfusions?
>>
>>153948263
This is probably my biggest gripe with the comic. The side chicks as characters. Are interesting because you can see they are flawed characters. However I don't fucking understand how the sidekicks being the way they are is somehow the goal when the super heroes get new kids to be sidekicks.
>>
>>153948283
Lastly OG Chippy being alive adds nothing to the story, other than a scary cover art.
>>
>>153948908
Is it so wrong to have excuses to draw grody Tales From the Crypt putrefaction?
>>
>>153949016
I guess. But still it doesn't take much tweaking to make his character matter. From I remember Chippy sorr of slinking around in the background wanted to tell the new brat pack. Only to just
[Spoiler] get killed by blasphemous[spoiler/]

You could have him actually deliver his message or maybe he instead switches the bomb so it's not a full revolution circle.
>>
>>153946464
The Boys is less of a targeted satire than it is an overindulgent exercise in mindless action and edgy nonsense.
That isn't to call The Boys bad, it is what it is, not everything should be a heady satire.
>>
>>153948283
Seems more heavy handed and more overtly satirical than the boys, makes sense for a limited series. Not my cup of tea but I can appreciate what it's trying to do, specially for the time.

Question for you OP. Did you read the G-Men arc in the boys? If you did what did you think of it?
>>
>>153948283
It's a great first issue.
I haven't read the others, but I read this one a while ago.
I love the art.
Though I have doubts that the later issues will be as good or as poignant.
>>
>>153946464
It was the worst parts of the Boys, with none of the positives: a crass attempt at a cynical subversion of beloved superheroes, but with an author lacking the critical thought to say anything meaningful about what they represent in literature. The story starts and ends at "hey what if Batman was gay for his underage sidekick?" or "What if Wonder Woman forced her sidekick to get an abortion?". It's all just shock value created almost solely because the author saw that some people didn't care for Robin, which is why DC has multiple ongoings for the dozen or so Robins it's created over the years, the first of which started shortly after Brat Pack was published, but even that ignores that Teen Titans had been running for decades by this point.
At least The Boys had some criticism towards the actual capeshit publishing industry at large, between diddler Professor X and a super team composed of the mentally retarded.
>>153947732
>Vought do have the makings of a military contractor but they were a private company rather than a government contractor.
Vought in the comics (never watched the show) are explicitly trying to use Supes to get government defense contracts which are basically free money, but are held back by the fact that their 'product' is composed of spoiled idiot celebrities, who generally aren't effective at fighting a real war.
They're shown as making conventional equipment during WWII but it was all faulty cheaply made, and led to a lot of casualties as a result.
I don't remember exactly why they didn't use Compound V on soldiers after WWII, but I think it was legitimately just "We want to brand this and slap our names on" combined with the absolute failure of Soldier Boy and his team, and by the modern era it was a safer investment to just pump out comics and movies.
>>
>>153948283
Well that was fun
>>
This thread made me finally read it. What the fuck was that ending about?

Why is True Man some glowing creature? What did they steal from him?
>>
>>153950765
I think he went full Morrison and came back after transforming in space to harvest his cells from all their bodies
>>
>>153949706
>It was the worst parts of the Boys, with none of the positives:
lol
lmao
>>
I actually don't like this comic. I get it's attempting "dark satire" but something about the entire thing feels very spiteful.
>>
>>153949706
>between diddler Professor X
I think that was about the director of X-Men who casting couch most the men on the movies.

You should look up Pyro. The first one. He was basically held hostage on a Hollywood party, probably passed around. He would sue later, and even changed his name after. I think X-Men 2000 is his one and only credit.
>>
>>153946464
Wish Veitch did new issues focusing on the asshole superheroes instead of just maximortal
>>
>>153950860
I read up on it, and it seems that it's some bullshit about ideals or whatever? I don't quite get it, it seems like it's just an edgy story about heroes being racist gay pedo groomers.
>>
I like how this board makes fun of people like MrEnter for finding stuff 'mean spirited :c' but then get really uppity when people make edgy comics about it.
>>
>>153946464
Brat Pack reads like a parody of edgy/deconstruction superhero comics
>>
>>153950765
You have to read the original maximortal comic
(The newer stories are fine but they seem way less important)
>>
>>153950983
Yeah I'd believe that's true at least in part, but with Ennis it can be hard to tell sometimes. Like usually in The Boys, if there's something fucked up with the system he'd just stated it directly by showing some Supes getting groomed by Weinstein. And then he also inserts the most crass, juvenile shit possible for the sake of it. So diddler Professor X could be interpreted either way when you read it.
>>
>>153951243
it was one of the firsts and did it without extending far beyond its stay
so something clearly superior about a subject matter appears to be taking the piss out of everything copying it that was inferior

It's one of the first sure but I don't think the story has anything interesting to say outside the novelty. Nor do I think it's a fun read. Infact it's pretty miserable. Art style is kinda of bad too, which feels wrong considering I'm shitting on a indie comic from 1990, but it's not very pleasing to the eye. Infact the entire thing just feels miserable from top to bottom.
This feels like a cool concept kinda stuck in a first draft.
>>
>>153951830
>I don't think the story has anything interesting to say outside the novelty
man, the amount of shit this applies to
>>
I like it less as a deconstruction of superheroes and more as a very blatant vent allegory for how comic artists were getting burnt through and fucked over by bigger companies. It showed more in some of his maximortal comics and came to a head when he just straight up wrote about comic authors getting fucked over in the text of the script.

If this ever got revisited I think that's the angle they'd really need to push to set it apart, but I doubt the real raw anger at corporate interests fucking up the creative process and treating employees badly is going to hit home quite as much now that we've had like 30 years of indie comics and manga dogwalking the old publishing leaders.
>>
Did Veitch ever explained why he changed the ending of the last issue in the trade paperback?
>>
>>153946464
Want the boys done right? Try "The Mighty" or "The American Way"
>>
>>153952299

>Some normie fucker makes a video or Twitter post about a run-of-the-mill comic book-style story
and from the get-go, there are industry takeaways. Am I supposed to be surprised by that? The whole Black Noir thing reminds me a lot of Marshal Law, which before the Brat Pack was widely discussed for its similarities to The Boys.
>>
>>153946464
Good job, OP. I mean it.
>>153952905
No, he was right to do that. We need more comic threads on the catalog.
>>
>>153949706
They didn't use V on soldiers because of the unpredictable nature of it. Sure you could get a Stormfront or Homelander level monster, but you could just as easily get someone like Groundhawk or MM's brother, who exploded from his power. The government made their own V, which is what Butcher, Hughie, and Frenchie have, making them super strong, agile, and durable, but at a workable and controllable level. I haven't read it in forever, so I can't remember if Vought made it or if the government reverse engineered it.
>>
>>153953258
>trusting the government with a super soldier drug
ennis is a fucking idiot
>>
>>153953354
The government is currently trusted with things way more dangerous than super soldier drugs. I agree Ennis is an idiot, but he isn't wrong for that one.
>>
>>153953399
then allow to be even more specific to highlight the problem
>trusting the CIA with a super soldier drug
>>
>>153953425
And again, I'm going to point out the CIA has things way more dangerous than a super soldier drug in the real world. In fact, making their operatives harder to kill would go against their whole MO.

You're not entirely wrong, it is a vent piece, but not about the industry. It's a vent over "Seduction of the Innocent" being taken as gospel and was a presentation of presenting Wertham's writings about the industry at face value.
The collector's edition is even dedicated to Wertham
