Also yeah it's such a needless hill to die on since Rio is a film about two birds that think they are the last of their species, of course there's gonna be a romance and even if he's so hung up over it I think Blu and Jewel do have genuine chemistry plus a natural development. Like the fact he highlights that it's a straight romance instead of just a romance feels very agenda driven like his tangent on animated films where characters get turned into things if they were not caucasian beforehand. Nigel is still great though and his subplot though pointless is the best part of the film especially having Gabi to bounce off of plus Beautiful Creatures is a great song even if Real in Rio is just one of the best songs in an animated film to me. Honestly the environmental angle feels kinda left to the wayside and tacked on for the most part from what I remember watching it last year. I don't recall much else of Schaff's criticism for Rio but I'm sure they were pretty basic or shallow judgements since he only pointed out Brazil looks nice in the film and I don't recall him saying anything about how well the birds are animated balancing their respective personality with animal accuracy.
