>>154254625As other people said, it absolutely was that big. It may not seem that way now, but abck then the style and writing felt very fresh and unique. There was also all the Mushroom War stuff - the idea that the entire story took place after the nuclear war felt very much in line with edgy fan theories ("everyone is actually dead and in hell", "the whole story is someone's coma dream") and creepypasta that were popular at the time, which made it all the more exciting to speculate about, and surprising when the show leaned into that.
