Kaufmo abstracted for a better reason, after the vibe got ruined he just wanted to get out, then got consumed by that increasing obsession. Ribbit died because she couldn't handle breaking up with someone who she only got to a first date with.

The way they talked about the super mega dramatic exchange between Ribbit and Jax on the snowy mountain throughout the entire show gave the impression that there was going to be some plot twist like Jax actually murdered her or something.

But instead, it was just teenage high school drama.
