You know why acclaimed classic anime (Cowboy Bebop, Berserk, Monster, Akira, GITS, etc.) tends to be very "universal" compared to how a lot of anime later on would become very, for want of a better term, "ANIME" in capital letters with quotation marks and all that they imply? Or why capeshit made before 2000 tends to be more approachable as well compared to the self-referential mess it is now?Authors, artists, writers and directors of the 80s into the 90s on both sides of the ocean were the first generations of creators who grew up watching anime or reading comic books, but since most nerd and otaku culture of the 60s and 70s wasn't all-encompassing, they had their own niche interests and both sides consumed lots of foreign and domestic media as well. Which was good: It helped them bring in ideas and concepts and build more universal stories with all their influences. As time went on, both anime viewers and creators alonside comic book readers and authors stopped consuming media other than anime, manga and videogames on one side and other comic books or shallow mainstream goyslop on the other, resulting in insular environments where those people who never consumed stuff outside their sphere are now making products that only have the world view of their favorite media, be it anime or comic books. And things have become, for lack of a better term, inbred.There has to be an end point where a reckoning comes and this spiral stops. But industries are led by money and the money is further and further down the spiral.
