There's no point pretending their works, on average, weren't "edgier" than most of what came before in cape comics, but because they were actually talented writers and not just ascended fanboys, they knew HOW to be edgy. The edge was deliberate and meaningful in a way that supported the stories and made them feel more impactful. To put it succinctly, the edge had a point.Because they were so good, all of the Americans that came after them have tried to be like them in one way or another, but since none of those American writers were even a fraction as good as the likes of Moore, Morrison or Ellis, they learned all the wrong lessons and started writing edge without a point, which had a profound negative impact on the genre that can be felt to this very day. This is the disaster that the British Invasion caused. Not by writing stories that were both edgy and good, but by allowing the Americans to think that the edge itself is what made the stories good.
