I see it's still rated PG. I'm a little disappointed, was hoping at least PG 13 just to allow a little extra edge to it all, but the trailer didn't seem too kiddified either so if that's how they're presenting it I'll appreciate a more 'adult' 3D animated film.

right not to criticize bird's passion project but the art style reminds me of how in the early days of cgi they hadn't quite mastered the art of capturing 2D art styles in 3D so it came out looking weird. but now the tech's gotten better so everyone still looks weird in HD.

While 2D isn't impossible to finance, it's a lot trickier. You can really only manage a 2D film in Europe thanks to all the cultural grants where they don't expect a return.

>>155583936
>>155584783
We legitimately can't make 2D animated films anymore, especially traditional hand-drawn. No one is able to do it anymore. The most you can hope for are rigs and no one would even think about funding a movie with fucking rigs, it looks too cheap.

>but I just can’t shake the feeling of “this would’ve looked so much better in 2D”
The problem is that this is almost always true. Even the best-looking 3D films achieve such acclaim by attempting to emulate 2D styles/shading/movement. How many times do we see the 2D concept art for Disney/Dreamworks films and it looks a bajillion times better than the final product?

The issue is that it's just a dead medium. Not enough studios exist that can do it compoetently and consistently. If you choose to make a 2D animated film in current year, you're shooting yourself in the foot from the get-go, which is why nobody chooses it anymore.
>>
>>155583272
Wait...this isn't a GOAT-esque movie about a female kangaroo's journey to compete on an Olympic breakdancing team? Pass.
>>
No one does 2D hand drawn anymore except Korean studios doing it for anime. Aside from being cheap Korean studios, they're trained for an entirely different style. Even if you had unlimited funds to build a studio and the supply chain from the ground up (because there are none anymore in the West they were all killed off), no one knows how to do it. All the masters who knew before didn't train anyone to come after them because there was no future to train them for. You should just accept we will never get any more 2D animated films.

We aren't getting anything cg that doesn't look unsettling these days. Even though everyone's gargling Laika's balls, Wildwood's human models look like shit, with big bags under thier eyes regardless of age, and the mc's little brother is just a torso with nubs for legs. The animals look decent, though.

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/business/business-news/paramount-sale-shari-redstone-skydance-upset-1235917956/
>Meanwhile, there are the questions swirling in the animation community about the absence of Lasseter, the former creative head of Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios. While Skydance Animation has been touted as an attractive element of a potential Skydance-Paramount hookup (though Paramount has its own animation division, with IP like SpongeBob SquarePants), but in reality, the picture has been complicated. Luck, Skydance Animation’s first feature film under Lasseter, got middling reviews upon its release on AppleTV+ in 2022, though it has performed steadily on the streaming service. (The film had been started before Lasseter was hired but was expensively reworked once he arrived.) Sources say the relationship between Skydance Animation and Apple blew up when the tech giant concluded that other planned projects were too costly and not strong enough creatively. One sticking point was a planned hand-drawn film, Ray Gunn, from Incredibles director Brad Bird for a number exceeding $150 million.
$150 million is a drop in a bucket for apple and it's a 2d animated film by brad bird. i don't get it.

>>155583272
https://www.esquire.com/entertainment/movies/a73774193/ray-gunn-brad-bird/
>Brad Bird knew Ray Gunn would draw its power from a fusion reaction: The animated adventure from the Incredibles and Iron Giant filmmaker is a detective-noir mystery that unfolds in the shadows of a sunny science-fiction utopia. He became obsessed with bringing two disparate genres into one story, with old-school private eyes, gangsters, and femme fatales clashing in a glossy world of aliens and space-age technology.
It's very strange that he seems to sincerely believe combining pulpy detective stories with sci-fi is a groundbreaking idea, enough so to be the main pitch of the film.

Netflix seem to have a lot of confidence in it, sounds a lot like they they think they've another Golden on their hands with the song. Involved with the new crappy harry potter tv show. I still love Matt Berry, and I'm glad he's getting a huge payday from that, but it's such a godawful story and this new one doesn't even have Chris Columbus to make it more visually palatable.
Speaking of visual palatability, Ray Gunn looks alright. I definitely would've preferred he stick to his guns and get it traditionally animated, but it doesn't look bad for Skydance. A hell of a lot better than that new Illumination crapshoot coming out, Not Alone.

Brad Bird has been hyping up about how much more adult the film is than his usual work, which is why it's on streaming instead of a Pixar movie. Though it seems he meant it moreso in the sense that it will have some swears and be more action packed, like Incredibles 2.
>>
>>155593587
>How come?
It really didn't have anything that would grab the interest of a little kid right off the bat, for one. But it was also more serious with only little bits of generally dry comedy bubbling through.
This will sound odd. But I'd compare it to a comedian like Jim Gaffigan. I never realized he was a "clean" comic until someone told me.

a PG rating has nothing to do with the themes or mood or maturity, only on-screen objectionable matter.

>>
Do people saying that it would be better in 2D understand that we literally can't make films like that anymore? All the old masters retired. Even with a billion dollar budget you couldn't do it. The skills no longer exist in the workforce.

Brad Bird has excellent taste in women, all his designs are god-tier.
>>
>>155595852
It's not so much the skills but the production for a 3D animation is just much more efficient than anything 2D. Even if it's already late in the production cycle you can still do massive changes in lighting and even an entire scene and the 3D team can do it faster. Most people think it's just a "style" without realizing it's technically the logical endpoint of animation production becoming more and more efficient.
