The main reason the plot even moves is that Mike couldn't do it, he spent years trying to get her to open up by excusing her behavior, tried to give the first steps himself by making his intentions clear, and the moment he resolved that there was nothing behind her walls because she was the wall herself he called quits. Lucy's obsession with Mike is that she believes if there's anything behind herself he can find it, but she doesn't care for how hurt that would make him. To respond to your reply, which I never got a chance to last thread: Yes, Mike deserves sympathy for being a victim of Lucy's abuse, despite Taeshi's attempts to shift blame onto him. But that's exactly my point: the same logic SHOULD apply to various other characters, like Sue. But these threads have a bad habit of buying into Taeshi's victim-blaming bullshit whenever it's about any other character. Anons can spot how the logic of "well Mike accepted Lucy's behavior, so really it's his own fault" is bullshit, but for some reason will then turn around and repeat the exact same lines about other characters.

As other anon pointed out last thread, every Sue chapter is "Sue is forced to apologize for standing up for herself, all her friends treat her like shit, and fate conspires to undermine her self worth". Sue has been called a loser by her close friends, gotten bullied until she cries for trying to help others, and had everything she's done or attempted mocked. Mike gets dunked on a lot but at least he has SOME bright spots where he gets heard out and told "it isn't your fault, you're a good person and don't deserve to feel bad". Sue doesn't get any of that.
