What should I do if I'm disappointed with my Yaesu FT-70d? I guess the most frustrating thing is how tedious it is to navigate/program.

Field day is so gay

this hobby will never die. right. CQ anyone? hello?
Just got back from field day with the local club. Why is it, that if you ask one (1) question about encryption, the boomerhams all look at you like you grew 3 extra heads that look like Putin, Hitler and Satan?

>>2816204I'll come short of saying it was life changing, but WOW!I thought I was a semi-seasoned contester with about 5 years of SSB contests under my belt. I knew the patterns and could get a gleam of the personalities. Some folks (mainly Caribbean) had killer stations and were the most well oiled machines. Then you had smaller stations, others with exhaustion, you'd pick up on attitudes and grudges in voices, and others too that were lagging behind or even women. Sitting in a pile up and phonetically saying my callsign a dozen times and making a 40 second exchange seemed like simply paying your dues.CW is just that. God's digital mode. Hear them, send your call, send the exchange, log it 10 seconds later.Mind blown.
>>2815934N00b here, wtf is the logbook of the world?
>>2815913Just made a DX contact from Western PA to Ireland on 20m. It was hard and it took some time, but it fucking worked.
>>2816356nice work anon, is the contest still ongoing ? band might be crowded
>>2816358It's starting to pick up. I heard some earlier on 20m. I think most contest activity was on 40m.

How many here use Morse code, and how fast can you receive? My peak performance was around 21 wpm, but I am planning to return to Morse code, been polishing my listening skills.
>>2817251My recall is atrocious and my handicap, but I tried to WAS in Field Day. I immersed myself for about 20 hours and my familiarity grew by leaps and bounds. >>2815837Tell me more about this setup because I have a need to set up a repeater for some future events:>is it a crossband repeater for vhf-uhf? I figure vhf on the low side for longer range to receive.>I'm guessing you're using a duplexer to share an antenna between them? Which one?>is there an amp or what else is in the build>is this really more cost effective than just using a TYT TH-9800 for cross band repeating at 50watts?
>>2817731>TYT TH-9800You might as well do that. It's a crap rig, but it does work.
>>2817731>TYT TH-9800if you want only VHF/UHF you don't need that shit, get a V/U transceiver, the TYT is a quad band
According to field-day.arrl dot org, there have been 2,527 entries for 2024 Field Day.Based on the entries based in pic related, that is the lowest number since 2008.The 2020-2023 explosion should be obviously attributed to covid, loosening category restrictions, and the divergence of club logs to individual logs. Was there an explosion of club activity or was Field Day largely rejected by the masses?
Anyone else noticing a harmonic on all of the bands?Oh God. It's my antenna or coax, isn't it?
>>2818437
>>2818437>>2818438
>>2818437It can mean that the frontend is overloaded, perhaps by a single very powerful signal that brings the ADC into saturation. If so, a well placed notch filter will fix that.

>>2818660>>2818706This is miserable. It's every 60Hz from 40m and up. Occasionally it's every 30Hz.Guess I get to learn about understanding and solving RF interference problems
>>2818780Disconnect the antenna and see if the pattern is still there, if so, the noise comes via th emains or data cables.
>>2818813Thanks, anon. That was a great idea. I had another antenna with an SDR which sees the same thing. I unplugged the original just in case and it went away. At least I can eliminate the feedlines.I found the Quansheng has a digital S meter. Identifying the frequency, I've been programming that into the HT and walking around the house. I've found 2 offending devices, but they pail to the signal that the large antennas are picking up. I suspect it's off my property. Next I suppose will be to determine if it's in my control such as a public utility. Otherwise I'll need to find a way to mitigate the noise.
>>2818846if you are a ham you can report the disturbance to the FCC or equivalent in your country, they are hungry for these things usually
>>2818847I am, and I'm in the US.I walked around the neighborhood until a Karen neighbor yelled at me and demanded to explain my evil actions. She has passed me walking her dog for a decade now. Sigh. I found the signal at 146.???mhz and drove around with my mobile fm radio. It was about a S7 a block over at a house with solar panels. 4-6 blocks away was another house with solar panels and it blew my ears out.Guess I'll make a yagi and see if Karen wants to call the cops.Ising the HT as basically a Geiger counter worked well to sniff out stuff around the house.
>>2818919>with solar panels.ah fuck, the electronics that can come with these things can be really awful, high currents that are chopped, minimal to no filtering on every chink MPPT, charger, etc, a nightmare.
>>2818919>house with solar panelsOK, so most likely they use a Chinese inverter. I wonder if they purposely make them so to destroy radio reception. Worse, they only last a few years, while solar panels can last 40+ years with minimal loss of performance.
>>2818927Yea, there have been a few fly by night companies that have solicited this summer, however both of those houses have had the panels up on their roofs for over a year.I can entertain the idea it's some 120v power converter since it's at 60Mhz intervals which is being overworked in the summer with high SFI.I'll watch tonight to see if it drops. So far at 6:40pm they're still strong. I can go back with a yagi, it just seems like speculation passing by with a ht and a 2m 1/4 wave>>2818940>Worse, they only last a few yearsI can't imagine the amount of power loss they're seeing. I see a harmonic from 47 hertz all the way up to 500+ mHz at every 60Hz. It's like a constant key being pressed down. It's a solid S5+ signal.I guess it was a productive day. I wouldn't care too much other than I've been getting into cw and on the waterfall it looks like I have a handful of stations to work only to get honked at
>>2815658How many of you guys troll autist boomers? Regale me with autist boomer seethe stories.
>>2818946Grow up.
>>2818944>I can't imagine the amount of power loss they're seeing.People focus solely on the solar panel conversion efficiency alone, and fail to consider the invertor losses. Worse, all those harmonics will go into their home network, and can reduce the lifetime of their appliances, especially those with motors such as fridges and freezers. And since the base frequency is not stable (unless connected to the mains) the harmonics from 1000 inverters will combine into a massive noise floor.Check if any of those harmonics hit any of the air bands, military or civilian. Experience is that this will get the authorities going. We had a story here a few years ago that one installation blanked out air traffic communications, and that got the authorities out on the road to locate the noise. You could try getting rid of it using a comb filter. on the audio output side, but it will still be a saturating signal on the input. A directional antenna and tight filters will help.
>>2819129>Check if any of those harmonics hit any of the air bands, military or civilian. It's a perfect harmonic every 60Hz from as low as my IC-7300 goes to however my SDR accurately sees. Every band. My understanding is the FCC stopped taking interference reports and imagine if they did, they'd have zero interest in a small signal in a small, residential house. With a ht you have to be in front of the house, but with a large antenna it screams from a block away (assuming I've found the source using a non-directional antenna).
