Need help picking a color. Will mostly be wearing this at work with business casual outfits. What do you guys think?
>>
>>18175414
>soiko
to hell with them
>>
>>18175414
gray. it's the more anonymous color. green is unusual, which means you run the risk of someone noticing your watch, seeing it's a seiko, and then thinking you're poor.
>>
Are there any good cheap watches that legitimately look and feel expensive? Under $1k or so.

>Are there any good cheap watches that legitimately look and feel expensive? Under $1k or so.
If you'd asked ten years ago, the answer would be yes. These days, no, unfortunately.
>>
>>18175422
What was good back then?
>>
>>18175423
>What was good back then?
A number of Seikos, but Seiko increased their prices while doing zero to their quality (if not actually downgrading it).

>dodge the bullet of buying a new watch with warranty which works and is fit for every day use
>buy a 66 year old watch which doesn't work (yet) instead because it's 600 and if it worked it'd be 3500
>and there's no gen spare parts because fewer than 4000 were ever produced
why am i retarded
>>
>>18175442
Not retarded. That's just the first fuckup everyone that gets into vintage watches makes. It's a learning process.
>>
>>18175443
I mean it was 700 bucks and I have a Ranchero with a dial that got its dial destroyed by the "restoration" and I'd just get a replica dial because I'm not autistic about it being all og. but at this point all these boomers have talked such a scare into me that I genuinely think it's going to break down and needs to be serviced every other month which of course won't happen.
to me that watch actually means something and I'd rather not have a watch than buy a watch that's a good deal or useful or appropriate. I like some modern watches but they're too large and too bulky and hardly anyone does field watches anymore. Why would I buy a dive watch or a sporty car/flying watch when I don't dive and don't have any kind of license.
>>
>>18175447
If you are lucky to find a good watchmaker, then once the movement is serviced, it should run for around 5-9 years depending on use before you'd want to service it again. The only other rule about vintage watches is to never have them near water. After that, wear and enjoy.

I have one vintage which is one of my dailies, and it'll run just fine for years after a good service. Don't lose hope Anon; if the movement is running and clean, then the only thing that can happen is an accidental drop to the ground or submersion in water.

San Martin and other known chinese brands offer the most in the 100-300 range with sapphire glasses, good lumen, and overall decent finishing compared to jap/swiss brands, they usually have workhorse movements that just work, but in looks they are as fine as watches that cost many times. The worst part of them are bracelets, but shit bracelets is what you get in watches under 4000€

I also kinda feel like Cartier is the only classic luxury brand that is okay to own in quartz version. After all, the Tank is a two hands watch that you wear for elegance and not to tell the time, and for the same reasons it has to be a silent watch.

it's interesting how all of the multicomplication feature-packed movements shat out in the last 20 years that have been growing in size to meet consumer demand are now too big to fit in watches that the market wants so poor people are now forced to choose between a watch that conforms with current tastes, or a watch that contains all the must-have features, because they can't afford a high end watch that satisfies all the criteria
>>
Please clarify why the Sw200 movement can be in watches priced from 400 USD to 3000 USD. Shouldn't they use a higher quality movement?
>>
I don't get Grand Seiko. Explain it to me.
>>
>>18175737
There are 36mm gmts now. That isn't super challenging.

Actually, ball does have a number of watches with a fuck load of complications. A few months back they dropped GMTs that also have day and date and moonphase and they have pushers to quickly move the gmt hand. Their watches tend to be big anyway because of the tritium tubes and general oversides watch market fuckery, so i guess if you're going to make your watches huge anyway you may as well pack them with novel combinations of complications.
>>
>>18175738
Why use a higher end movement if you can get away with a cheap one? Watch manufacturers just wanna make a buck you know.
>>
for those who have 2+ automatic watches

they got a huge boost from le stealth wealth old money memesters because if you live under a rock you can tell yourself you're the only person on the planet who has ever heard of this very obscure brand that has billboards at bus stations, coupled with the generally insufferable image of the people who wear rolexes, men who wanted something to impress other men flocked to them so now we see nicholas cage at the oscars wearing a $50k diamond-encrusted GS which is much more subtle and tasteful than those gaudy flashy new money watches like rolex, have I mentioned rolex? rolex totally doesn't live rent free in the heads of GS memesters that's why it's better than rolex and rolex has to be mentioned in every other sentence when discussing GS which is totally better than rolex btw.

rolex. also rolex.
>>
>>18175746
In the old days when automatics rarely had more than 40 hours of power reserve, your only option was to either buy a winder or just live with it.
Most people would rotate watches on a weekly basis and only deal with setting them on a Sunday.

Nowadays, good automatics have around 3-5 days of power reserve, so leaving it to sit for a day or two while you wear something else won't stop it.
>>
>>18175747
>>18175748
From my experience, and from what I see here again, nobody ever mentions rolex except the people that claim that "X owners only talk about rooex" are the ones who always bring up rolex.
It's very simple:
>It's made in Japan and that actually means something instead of swiss made which doesn't mean anything anymore
>Amazing dials with the best finished markers and hands for that price point and punching way above it, too
>Unique shit like spring drive and memeratsu polish
>Many weebs exist

The "GS is like Japanese Rolex" thing was more common a few years ago when GS was a new thing being introduced to western markets.
Rolex is the biggest, most famous watchmaker so naturally anything new will be compared to it since it gives everyone a common point of comparison.

Then we all realized, no, GS is nowhere near Rolex, so now you get more accurate comparisons like GS vs Tudor or GS vs Omega.

Rolex is the benchmark by which all beginners compare their watches, so it's understandable. Grand Seiko currently doesn't have the social status that Rolex does, so the comment will appear unprompted. It happens with every brand, surprisingly, but the common denominator is the horological knowledge of the group. If you're out with people who know nothing about watches, then they'll still ask you why you got a Patek instead of a Rolex or a smartwatch.

That's why it's far better to buy watches for yourself and not for those you are trying to impress. The only justification you'll need is, 'because I love it'.

Good day CitizenChad! Morning Koffee is a beautiful thing, the 321 continues to wind smoothly, and my vigil for the postman begins while I do some paperwork. Today should be a great day; to say that I'm excited is a severe understatement. Are you doing well?

Absolutely based.
Had the JapFlu for a solid 10 days back in late May. But have been doing fine ever since. Life is good, waiting for some things to finalize hopefully until September, then I can start finally working in WeebLand.
No new watches for me no. I decided on my exit game-watch but I'm still waiting for the right offer.
I heard you got a new watch, it's what they say on the discord server at least.
Besides that, how's life? Come visit me in Japan at some point, I will make it worth it.

Couldn't agree more, fren. It is afternoon kofe time here right now.
I think we all share your excitement and are eagerly awaiting on your next piece.
All is well on my end, despite the somewhat gloomy weather today, thank you for asking.
Have a productive and fulfilling day!

>>18175823
Aw shit, sorry to hear about the flu; glad you recovered and continue to work towards your goals. Interesting to hear about the exit watch; will you tell us, or is it a secret until it comes in? I tend to keep mine secrets until they're in my hands...that way (hopefully) prices don't suddenly move in a way that is bad for me...lol I think I'm just superstitious though...but I do notice that if I suddenly take interest in a watch, I'll start to see lots of reviews of it by YTubers. Yes, the Speedy reissue is new, though of course it's actually around 25 years old or so now. Very happy with it, even though the design has flaws. I'm now waiting for a final piece, which hopefully will arrive today. Life is excellent, and I hope it is with you too. Unfortunately I will not be in Japan anytime soon, but perhaps in the future when the time is right. You're very kind; we would definitely have a good meal together.

>>18175824
That's very nice of you to say; I don't think the new watch I'm getting has been on this forum yet, but I could have missed something when I was gone. Anyway, it's aesthetically perfect, so I have a feeling it'll be the last since I can't really top it in terms of 'look'. I hope you enjoy the rest of your day and are able to relax. Today will be both productive and fulfilling!

>in has a ghost date
wdym?
>>
>>18175892
Ghost date is when a no-date watch is made using a movement that does have a date.

A Rolex Explorer, for example, doesn't have a date so when you pull the crown, there's only one stop, directly to the timesetting mode.
A Datejust, does have a date, so when you pull the crown, there's a second position between winding and timesetting, where you set the date.

If you have a no-date watch but it still has that second stop, that's called a ghost date. They just fitted a dial without a date aperture instead of spending the money to either modify the movement to be no-date or used a dedicated no-date movement.
>>
>>18175892
A ghost date is when a watch that doesn't have a date complication on the dial still uses a movement with a date complication. So you can still set the date and you can still hear it click over at midnight even though you can't see it.
>>
Lumepill me on lume
It's only at its brightest in the first 5 or so minutes before it just looks like the bare minimum until the following morning. You're basically having to shine a light on it for a minute or two before it's actually good, you're not gonna solar power it because it'll be dim by the time the sun has set.
How do you make the most of lume? I want to believe
>>

>>
>>18175906
OMFGLOOOM is for guys who were enthralled by glow-in-the-dark toys as children.

Lume does not actually have to be that bright to be long-lasting. It's for reading in darkness when your eyes have adjusted. Having bright lume when there's light enough to read the dial anyway is pointless.

For example, the JLC Master Control watches only have these tiny little dots of lume and little strips on the hands. You'd think, "Why, you can't see it glow at all!" However, when it's two in the morning and it's pitch black in your bedroom, you can see it glowing quite well on your nightstand.

Basically, it's just another feature that people obsess over that doesn't actually matter in the real world, like huge water resistance.

What about when watches used to have radioactive shit all over the dial, was it more useful then? I always assumed the modern non-radioactive shit like SuperLuminova is just a cope for not being able to use radium anymore.

Radium was excellent because it would continuously glow; tritium did the same. You didn't have to charge the watch. Superluminova however is better because it doesn't appear to degrade with time, assuming there is no water damage. By comparison, both Radium and Tritium glow less as the years go by, and though they can be 're-activated' using a blacklight, they simply fade away quickly after and can't be 'charged' well enough to be useful.

As an example, here's my 1966 Speedy with the original Tritium, as best I can photograph it immediately after turning off the blacklight.
>>
>>18175957
A couple threads ago there was a chemistcel who detailed the actual mechanism of each of the luminous materials in between all the avatarfagging and bitterfagging. Interesting for nerds.

The basic run-down was this:
Radium glows basically forever but was incredibly toxic. It killed people and they stopped using it by the 1950s
Tritium glows constantly but gets progressively dimmer over time. After about 20 years it will be completely dead and the only way to get it back is to replace the dial (or the tritium tubes in the case of a manufacturer like Ball)
Super-LumiNova and ones like it will last forever but need to be recharged with UV light.

The Chemistcel is quite right, but to be clear: The radium used for watches and clocks glows less over time due to the zinc sulfide mixture in the luminescent paint being worn out by the continuous radiation of the gamma rays. The radium itself has a half-life of around 1600 years, but the paint medium will destroy itself.

I have tried this one at an AD. It's an excellent watch. It's even thinner than the numbers suggest because of the domed crystal. It wears much smaller than a GMT-Master II. I travel for work quite a bit, actually. I'm usually on travel at least a week per month, so I do have use for the complication, but also, I just like it.

AFAIK, the idea of 24 time zones as we understand them was proposed by the Italian Quirico Filipanti in the 1850s but a Canadian named Sanford Fleming developed and implemented the system we use today in the 1880s.

Why does this thread hate bittercel so much? He is unironically the best poster we have ever had. Here's my reasons:

bittercel is always brutally honest. He is like water, he will find a crack in your watch and pour in from there. He is the criticism we need. You never get that in watchuseek or reddit, you only get an echo chamber of “nice watch, wear it in good health, champ” bullshit. Not with bittercel, he does not care for your feelings which is why he will tell you the truth. Yes, your watch is too big for you, yes it’s a shitter, yes the lugs look like shit, yes the movement is crap. You, as a critically thinking individual, should embrace this.

We are all protected by anonymity here which is the point of this site. Avatarfags are pathetic going against this. Take reversocel for example; he couldn’t handle a bit of heat from bittercel and immediately fucked off to r/watches as soon as someone wasn’t sucking his cock over his shitters and pens lmfao.

Yes, bittercel may seem bitter at first, but he is the counter force to all this circle-jerking in here. He is harsh but fair. You hold the fact he never posts a watch against him, but that is merely him not taking a side. He is not a brain-dead fanboy to brands (other than Rolex, but Rolex is Rolex). This way he maintains his unbiased position.

And the best part of bittercel? He is always there for you, right here, in this thread.

Yes, look for a watchmaker in your area. Unless that's an extremely proprietary size, it would be fairly inexpensive to replace the crystal.
Do not just take it to the kiosk in the mall where they just replace batteries and resize bracelets. They don't know what they're doing.

see, thats what I'm afraid of, kinda.
I dont want to be perceived as brown. I identify Rolex with brownness.

I know that in the end I will bite the bullet and get an Omega
besides, I really, really prefer transparent cases more and Rolex's clasps are too bulky for my liking

I wish someone gifted me a rolex so this whole thing would be over lol

It really depends on the model. An understated OP or Explorer is not the same as a diamond encrusted Day-Date.

>>
>>18176311
It's worse for me. I'm only worth 50k. I have the money for a rolex right now. But I don't have enough money to not feel the pain when buying. That's true watch suffering..

>>18176320
my rule of thumb is, I dont own luxury items more than 2.5% of my net non-property assets
its 200k in property and 100k in assets, so im waiting for 150k before I can pull the trigger on my ome..rol.. whatever

I recommend doing the same as my 50k became 100k in a span of 12 months, my 40k would have been 80k
its an OK time to buy assets with dems losing, FED cutting and more
>>
>>18176311

The Yen is weak and that's a used watch. Your point? You can't serious think rolex has bad value retention
>>
I will never understand the Rolex worship.
>>
>>18176329
Oh, it's not worship. It's simple enjoyment. Rolex lives rent-free in the heads of seething poors and figure that, since they think about Rolex all the time, people who actually own them must really, really think about them all the time.

Rolex is also the best selling luxury watch brand in the world, so there's a lot of Rolex owners out there.
>>
>Homos
>dial designs actually look kinda gay
>made in a country known for being an lgbt centre of attraction

Wew so many coincidences!
>>
>>18176330
It also lives mostly in the heads of grandseiko and omega owers lol
>>
>>18176329
The worship is unironically one of the best reasons to buy Rolexes. It keeps the values high. It's nice that a really expensive watch could effectively act as a savings account.
>>
>>18176329
its a rite of passage
only weird thing is how no other luxury brand comes close

we have like 5-6 luxury cars you see every day but only 1 luxury watch you recognize
idk but I feel like watches are becoming "meta" again and I think a brand or two will coexist with rolex in terms of prestige

>idk but I feel like watches are becoming "meta" again and I think a brand or two will coexist with rolex in terms of prestige

I think Cartier comes close in terms of prestige. They're the most famous jeweler in the world. If you were to ask the average person what's the best watch in the world, they'd say Rolex, but I think if you were to ask them if a Cartier watch is prestigious, they'd definitely say yes.

Compare to something like Patek, they'd probably have no idea what that is or Omega, which they'll have heard of (mostly due to them Olympics), but will not think it's particularly glamorous.

Buying watches only to show off status is peak NPC and you should probably commit suicide if this is your mindset
>>
>>18176324
>The Yen is weak
That would only mean it cost more yen, the price in US dollars for that watch should be the same no matter where you’re selling it. It could be there’s something wrong with the watch. Otherwise you could just buy that and sell it online for whatever milgauss goes for (10k+ USD maybe?) for instant profit.

but my circles and I consider Cartier as a ladies brand

its rolex for boys and cartier for girls. but you are right, its Apple Watch, Rolex, and Cartier. I think you can even find a statista study on this exact order iirc

>I think you are right

It really depends on the age of the person. In the 1980s Cartier watches were very popular and visible in pop culture (think Gordon Gekko or Remington Steele) so older people will think of a Cartier watch that way.

Younger people who don't know about watches will mostly think of Cartier as a jeweler and actually aren't interested in Cartier beyond a Love bracelet or Trinity ring.
>>
>>18176368
seems to be accurate
im 29 and im coming to terms with Cartier being a high end watch brand for males as well, but rectangle case is not the name of the game atm

Same. I love the designs, but I've tried on enough Tanks and Santoses to where I know they just aren't comfortable on my wrist.
Cartier does make some round watches but the Ronde just looks incredibly generic and the Ballon Bleu, while only from 2007, looks dated to my eye.

Mechanical watches as a technology start to look and feel really good after you've spent an hour trying to tell your computer that when you tell it you select shut down from the power drop down menu that you actually want it to shut down and not restart immediately. Your rolex doesn't generally do things that it should go without saying you probably didn't intend for them to do.
>>
>>18177015
Try to service a mechanical movement, then test it on a timegrapher see the reading all over the place and feel the pain
