Also both come from military/equestrian heritage which is usually the standard for menswear. Trenchcoat is for rainy weather and keeping warm from spring to fall (especially with a liner) and overcoats are for winter when the trench doesn't cut it. You can use a topcoat instead of a trench but I think a proper topcoat is better saved for formal wear like a tuxedo or tailcoat.
