>Advice for new runners
- Build up speed and mileage SLOOOOWLY (start with 15 minutes, increase mileage 10% per week)
- It will feel like you're going slow, you are; don't worry about setting good times for a couple months
- If you start to feel pain anywhere, stop and rest
- Don't try to copy what pros are doing. Do what feels natural
- Once you can comfortably roon 6 miles/10km, start thinking about a goal in terms of race distance and time, and look for a training plan for that goal (see below for suggested plans)

Just eat banana or toast or a cereal/protein/Clif bar. These won't upset your stomach. Anything with fat will make it very painful to run.
Personally I have banan and coffee, or banan+toast and coffee

Do any of you guys actually do this?
I'll admit it wasn't as miserable as I had expected, but definitely far far worse than an actual run along a path or something.

It was nice that there were no hills, and the material of the track is springier and easier on the joints. But it really is an exercise in mental discipline to turn left for 50 minutes straight.

does the garmin 255 music really have just a shitload of problems? their forum is full of headphone dropouts, having to reset for bluetooth, and just general stuff not working consistently. i usually use an old android but it's gps is dying so it's time to replace it.

Hello /roon/ers

I recently picked up running as a hobby and have some questions you might be able to help me with.

Beforehand I was mainly into lifting/climbing/martial arts. I Started going out for runs more about a month ago. I figured that having a (attainable) goal would help me stay focused and have something to work towards.

I would like to complete a half marathon in October and beat it with an “acceptable “ time (which time would that be?).

To track my progress i bought a Garmin watch. There are race predictions on my watch, how accurate are those? Judging by my 5/10 Km time they are decently accurate, but i have never run that far so i couldn’t tell for the half marathon. The race prediction time is at 1:47:21.

Given the time to prepare until then i would obviously want to improve. How much time can i shave off here? What is realistic?

I would only able to run 2-3 times per week.

>>74072084
The music feature on my Garmin Fenix 7 works decently enough. I enjoy not having my phone with me, however you are quite limited with the watch compared to your phone. You can only play Playlists etc and don't have as many controls. I have rarely had any connection issues so far and i would recommend the feature.
>>
>went from 1:36 half marathon to not be able to run 5k at 5/min pace in the space of 2 months despite running regularly
I've rested, done blood work, hydrate well before each run yet it doesn't seem to go back to normal. It's very disappointing and at this point I don't know what to do.
>>
>>74072304

>wants to hop on the second hardest race in the discipline in a half of year

another stemcel joining the ranks with his bland goals, welcome to the club buddy!
>>
>>74072084
Just get a running belt and carry your phone. Even if you're not playing music from it, a 265 will allow you to control your phone's music playback and I presume the same applies to a 255 music.
>>
>>74072352

Ah yes, ~150 to 200 grams for the phone and another ~100 for the belt worn around your hips is a massive weight dragging you down. It's surely noticeable and not within the daily variation on weight you'll have as a human.

Also:
Cant be that hard of a race if someone new to the hobby would be able to finish it without problems my friend :^)

>>
>>74072406
It means you sweat around your waist and it's different to weight that's part of your body. It shouldn't be necessary to carry an entire computer with you when what you want is music. Plus you can't really use a touch screen while running.

>>
>>74072348
Why are you a gay nigger
>>
>>74072451
Good thing we established you can control it from your wrist, and you've never worn a running belt if you think it makes you sweat differently. The fact that a proper, or even chinkshit knockoff belt, stops the weight from bouncing around means that you actually will not notice it, especially since even a tiny music player will require a mounting system too unless you plan to hold it in your hand the entire time. Unless you're an idiot who insists on buying a phablet instead of an actually phone sized phone, your phone is a fine choice.
>>
>>74072533
Of course it will make you sweat differently, I've used several. The player I use is tiny enough that you can clip it to your shirt or pants, weighs maybe 5 grams at most. Carrying an entire phone is overkill unless you have some other reason for taking it.
>>
>>74072613
>weighs maybe 5 grams at most.

Even an iPod shuffle, just as an example of an ultralight player even if Apple is always overpriced, weighs in at 12g and in exchange you're dealing with a screenless control system that will not be interfacing with your watch. Do you also insist on buying only the lightest weight running gear, since you're gonna have more then a hundred grams of weight across your clothing if not. The problem with running with your phone isn't the weight, it's that if you shove it into a pocket, it's uneven and not fixed whereas sticking it into a belt that properly holds it in place solves these issues.

Running on a treadmill does NOT prepare you for running outside. I started running using a treadmill 3x a week for up to an hour. Now that the weather is better I've tried running outside 1x a week for less than 30 minutes. I'm already injured, my ankle is fucked and my calf immediately locks up 10 minutes into the run. I'm sure my cardiovascular system has improved, but my musculoskeletal system was not prepared. I need to ease into this slower.

Nah, it's the same with running. The thing is it's harder to tell what's "too much" when it comes to running because you body literally evolved to run so your body can push you way further than it can push you to lift heavy things. Also the runner's high can make you do stupid shit while also suppressing your pain, you don't get that kind of high from lifting.

I went through the dog park. It's very large, many acres, so it's semi-fenced in. There are some unfenced/ungated openings at the corners that I went through. Lots of soft gravel and mulch trails to run around on. Was still pretty early in the day, so not many dogs and they were well behaved. Only a couple even got close to me. Got to see lots of herons hanging around that part of the river there though, which was neat. I also have exciting news: I think the buns are officially out of hibernation. I saw 5 yesterday and 3 today. No little ones yet, but soon I think. Also, no baby ducks or geese yet....

What's the best way to unfuck my running? I've already upped my occasional cardio, doing more light jogs, doing biking sometimes, walking more, even did high rep squats the other day. I just have literally zero experience actually programming cardio.

Keep your runs easy as you add volume. Once you're up to the mileage you want, hold your mileage steady and you can start adding intensity

Strained my soleus and physio said no running for 7-10 days at least and then slowly easing back into the mileage.

Have a half marathon in exactly one month and my original training program had me increasing my runs each week until the race. I'm 50/50 if I'm going to even be able to do the race now but I want to give myself the best possible chance. What can I do for cardio? I have a spin bike but I struggle to get a high HR on it before my quads tire out. I'm thinking just banging out 2 hours a day on it and focusing on massage and calf raises (as directed by the physio) to give myself the best shot.

Pretty fucking bummed though, until this week my program was going so fucking well.

But we can't change the wind bros, we can only adjust our sails.

What should I look for in a pair of shoes for a complete beginner?
I've had people recommend $300 shoes to me, but I'm not willing to drop that much money when I'm still unsure if I'll physically be able to keep running long-term.

I have flat feet and pretty bad ankle mobility due to a tarsal coalition, do I just want to find some shoes that are as soft and springy as possible to counteract that?
>>
>>74081224
300 bucks is overkill, but you are going to probably be around 150 for a nice pair and it's well worth it. Buying the right shoes at the start took me from hating life the following day after a mile and half to being okay after multiple days of 2+ miles in a row. Go to a real running store near you, and tell the guy you're a beginner. If he recommends shoes to you before having you walk in front of him so he can see how you're walking, be polite but don't buy anything since they're fucking clueless. If you need ankle support, they make shoes like that. A good place to read read is https://runrepeat.com/, but you're probably going to be overwhelmed with the information and have no context for most of the metrics until after you've tried a decent pair and find what does and doesn't work for you.

Nice, I hit same time on my workout Tuesday
>>
>>74081271
Thanks for the advice, I appreciate it.
But I should clarify that I mean $300 AUD.
Like someone recommended me a pair of Saucony Endorphin Speed 4, which is $290 AUD ($184 USD). I have no problem spending that much money if I know I'll be able to keep running, my goal right now is just to get shoes that are good enough to prevent injuries for long enough that I can tell whether running will even be possible for me (so maybe 6 months, or until I can run 5km).
>>
>>74081082
What if I got up to say 10k mileage at whatever pace I can do it at, but then started adding 1 mile or 5k runs at faster pace? The long term goal is just a semi-decent 5k time, which I have been able to run (with a terrible pace) from day one.
>>
>>74081309
I like my Endorphin Speeds, but you want a daily trainer right now, not something with a plate in it. I'm currently using my Speeds as my "fast" shoe, while I have a pair of Hoka Cliftons that are my "recovery" shoe, which is more what you'll be wanting. There's some good options for cheaper shoes, look at https://runrepeat.com/guides/best-running-shoes such as the Nike Pegasus which are coming in at 71 bucks USD. However, you might need something more expensive if you've got special needs with your ankles. You also should keep in mind that even a nice, or shitty, shoe isn't going to do anything if you put on too much mileage too quickly.
>>
>>74081334
Not him but you could do a 5k time trial once a week, while running easy and getting volume in the rest of the week. Simple but effective strategy.
>>

Sure, that sounds like you're increasing mileage, then holding mileage steady and increasing intensity.

Do some tempo runs or intervals. Get your legs used to moving faster mechanically.

Use this calculator to find good training paces: https://vdoto2.com/calculator

I recently got a pair of bondi 8s and I kind of hate them. Feels like I'm running with large bricks on my feet and the foam is stiff as hell even though it's advertised as a max cushion shoe. My old cliftons felt more cushioned/soft and I thought the bondi would be a step up. Maybe I just need to break them in a bit more but it's almost been a month running with them. I will say that I don't experience any ankle or knee pain when I wear them but I think that's more due to my form than the shoe.

How is it cope to understand that we are all constantly being sold things that don't actually work? All you have to do is try. If you fail, just try again. As long as you keep trying you will get there. Plus you don't have to follow the progression religiously. Do as much as you can and don't feel bad about repeating a week or two when you fail.

>>
>>74084629
As someone who was once where they are now I totally get it. That spot right there is the crux of the whole program. Once you make that jump it all starts coming together. Dude is only five weeks in and hasn't really developed the discipline it takes to make it work but if you can just make it past that point it's a pretty much gravy after that. He's just starting out so I think it's ok to cut him some slack.
>>
>>74084723
I'm not 5 weeks guy. I'm just living in reality. Better to have an interim week where you go, say, 6/3/12. Or why are we tied to 21 minutes? Try 12/5/12, 17/5/17, etc.

Feel the burn in your muscles and the sear in your skin. Also a great excuse to run shirtless if you're trying to showboat. Water tastes better when it's hot, sweat feels sticker and well earned, crushing electrolytes mid/after run feels is the closest thing you'll get to an IRL power-up, and cold showers feel fuckin amazing post-run. Its me >>74090298, why are these runners making me cringe?
>>
>>74090419
Its because you can't share their excitement.
>I just ran my first 10k five years ago in april 2019 woo hoo look at me

Forerunner 55. A little smaller compared to the more expensive garmins and you can find one for under 200. I've had no issues with mine so far. The display kind of sucks in terms of resolution though. It's not touchscreen either and can't play music without a phone.

Me again, >>74090298 and >>74090419
I ran the wrong fucking race. So there was a 15k, 10k and 5k all going on at the same time. They each had different turnaround points. I registered for the 10k and started with the 10k runners, but I turned around at the 5k turnaround point. My first race so its not a big deal but I'm a little disappointed. Lesson learned. And its so funny that I almost switched to run the 5k when I could. It is what it is.

Do you guys actually enjoy running? I don't doing one or two runs like pic rel per week, it's good for my stamina (I play footy in a club). But I could never imagine making running my main sport. It's just not enjoyable in any way.

*don't mind

Do you actually enjoy football? I don't mind doing one or two games a month, it's good for socialisation I guess. But I could never imagine making football my main sport. It's just not enjoyable in any way.

Yeah I do. When playing footy it feels like there's a point (I know it's pointless but it doesn't feel that way). Running on the other hand just feels kinda pointless. That's why I asked if you guys feel the same.

Can I combine the two 5ks into a single 10k? Will that help or hinder gains? And can I break 20min with this routine?

Reminder to get your speed up do lunge walks with twists and foot fires for extra exercise that will strengthen their agility, the last recommended exercise would be mountain climbers + push ups:

Lunge W/Twist.

There was a guy I was following who I knew was in the 10k race with me, but I overtook him just before that checkpoint. I have learned from it though, there's no way it will happen again.

Are you happy with the concept2? Been thinking about getting into rowing, but quite unsure about what to buy. I'd ideally like something that can connect with my Garmin watch, but not sure about what else might be important.
>>
>>74089609
Oh wow, yeah I'm not that far. I'm up north near Lake Sammamish.

>>74091187
Of course I can, but is it a good idea?

Rowing is pointless and useless desu, get an abwheel for the same but better benefit.

Rooned
Not a personal best, but my fourth fastest 5K of the past couple years. It is a PB since returning after my injury. Overall, felt alright, but I was drained at the end. I don't think I could have gone much faster. My plan was to jog the rest of the way home, but couldn't even do that. Had to stop and walk at the end.
>>
>>74092996
you fucking dweeb unless you are over 60 you can't roon yourself into a heart attack even if you wanted

Also here's the HR and pace chart. Obviously, I didn't warm up for this, just walked outside and started running. I guess I probably went a bit too hard at the beginning.

>>74090964
Absolutely not. There's always a point and with watch metrics that gameify running, it gets even better.
I live in densely populated suburbs and it's fun to cruise through neighborhoods too. But I think it would be equally fun to run trail or through a forest. The only unbearably boring run is a track run

>get an abwheel for the same but better benefit.
what are you talking about
>>
>>74092996
There was this historical guy named Aino Koivunen who was a Finnish soldier. He accidentally took too much performance enhancing drugs, got lost and ended up skii'ing literally hundreds of miles in one go. On top of that, he didn't even have proper nutrition, he was eating raw birds and living like a beast. When he was finally found, his heart rate was around 200 after all the madness (according to wikipedia). But what's cool about the story is that he still was fine and even had kids afterwards. That serves as a proof that the human body is incredibly durable.
