no thats a real x301 unmodified board.
I used a mod chip meant for the T420 and had to depin the connector going to the laptop mobo and repin it for the x301 since they are wired completely differently. it was a total pain in the ass, and then I had to actually fit the 14in panel to the x301 lid which took a ton more work.

the x230 is definitely a better thinkpad in most ways, but I wanted the x301 for the larger keyboard and the real libreboot experience.
Unfortunately, libreboot is fucked up on these and sleep/standby just doesnt work at all, so the laptop is basically unusable outside of just siting on a desk plugged in for me.
It was also unusable with dual batteries though my second battery failed at some point anyway and I put the cd drive back.

the x300/x301 were the inspiration for the x1c, they feature an insane redesign internally that doesnt really compare to anything else, and their construction is all CFRP panels with magnesium bonded reinforcement.

oops i thought you were the same poster as the one posting the x230 fhd mod pics, should have looked at the specs in neofetch to realize that

i only use x230 for heads support and i dream of x230 with cdrom
https://doc.coreboot.org/mainboard/lenovo/x301.html
>Linux 4.19.67-2 within Debian GNU/Linux stable, loaded from Linux payload (Heads) and SeaBIOS.
so if x301 supports coreboot and libreboot i wonder how hard it would be to build heads rom for it https://github.com/linuxboot/heads
i dont care about sleep functionality i always poweroff when i put my hands off the keyboard

going to stick with my x230 forever but always wanted to experiment with x301, thanks for the inspiration and nice machine btw

The binding of Isaac. What a game.
Or play all the 3d-era GTA. They run fine on PSVita, so your shitbox will be fine.
>>
>>100048972
played that back in the day on a collage laptop, it was fun for short sessions
>>
>>100048556
thanks, yeah the x301 is basically the most compact thinkpad with a cd drive so it's something a bit special.
it's just annoying that it isnt perfect on libreboot so I think I'm just going to revert to stock. I actually installed a second rom over the top of the original wson which holds libreboot, then cut the trace for power to the original and wired it to the new one, it would be trivial to install a switch.

Im planning on setting up a simple home server for media and have two laptop options, which one would you choose?

T420 with an i7-2620M or x220 with an i5(unkown model)
Both with
>8gm ram
>250gb ssd
>medium life battery
The T420 looks pretty good, the ports look pretty much brand, little to no scratches body or screen.
The x220 is suppose to be in almost the same condition but I cant confirm.

Thanks for the input, yeah Im also leanning towards that. Im also not triying to risk it and get a heavily used x220.

Pretty hyped. Most of the parts I need for my ThinkPad X220 have come in. Upgrading the display, upgrading to 16GB of RAM, putting in a 1TB SATA SSD and 256 GB mSATA SSD, upgrading the WiFi card to an AX210HMW, replacing the keyboard, replacing the battery, replacing the thermal paste on the CPU, and installing libreboot and OpenBSD.
>>

Any reason you're choosing a laptop over an NAS for media? Second question, do you plan on getting external hdd storage, if so what size?

Either one will work. Unless you're cramped for space I'd go with the T420 though.

I just like the idea of having an extra laptop just in case. Recently I gave my Mum an x230 so she could use. Im also planning on librebooting it, I've done it before with an x200.

>do you plan on getting external hdd storage, if so what size?
I already have around 40TB. I bought a bunch external HDDs years ago for a crypto scam and I've just been trowing all my torrents there.
I had plex installed on my main pc, but I want yo play around and do a server install, havent done that since college.

I found an open box My Cloud 4tb WD NAS that sold for $99 after a quick search

>>100054073
Thanks, good to know. I want to upgrade my 12tb NAS and am looking into other avenues. I like the idea of having a physical portal into my media (like a laptop) but it's not practical for the 100+tb storage that I want. Considering building a server or just buying a larger NAS rig
>>
>>100054073
>Awesome, I havent done a full upgrade in a while. Last one I did was the T440p, and I barely use it xd. I just need to libreboot it, are you planning on doing it?
I happen to know someone who will do it on my behalf. It's not really that I couldn't get the equipment to do it myself, I'd rather just have the assurance that it's being done by someone who knows what they're doing.

I'm using thinkpad T420, and started to get kernel panic (system freeze and caps lock start blinking), mostly when changing from AC to Batter or vice versa.
Currently using 6.6.26 LTS, different kernels give the same issue.
Is it hardware issue?
Because I couldn't re-produce the issue 100% of the time.

I am contemplating getting a T14.
Which one tho, Gen 1, Gen 2 or Gen 3?
Definitely going for AMD.

Gen 1 and 2 have upgradable RAM which is nice.
Gen 1 lacks the UHD screen option.
Gen 3 has the shittier keyboard.

It seems Gen 2 is the perfect middle ground.
Is the Ryzen 7 iGPU better than the Ryzen 5?

Other than that they are pretty much the same no?

It just looks worn out and shiny. I can't stand the look or feel of it. I was able to find an authentic replacement that is in much better condition. As for OpenBSD, just because I am curious about how it is doing these days. I got the X220 to tinker with various software and operating systems, and OpenBSD is a good candidate for tinkering. It certainly won't be the only OS I try.

>>
>>100064800
either Gen 1 or Gen 2

performance difference should be minimal, the only difference between them is that with the Gen 1 you can put a small NVMe in the WWAN port whereas the Gen 2 has a whitelist that prevents putting any SSDs in the WWAN port, but the Gen 2 has AV1 hardware decoding

that's the only difference between I know of. also the Gen 2 removed the 768p base option but not like you'll be using that

honestly current thinkpads are really weak compared to competition, I had a P14 workstation with Ryzen 7 and some AMD workstation GPU(which was the worst part of it) i got it from work it was a clean Windows 10 install and it was so fucking shit, it had so many hiccups with regular use and even tried playing Classic WoW on it, a fkin 16 year old game and it ran at 40fps
the keyboards after XX30 series are just absolute ass, the nipple is so fucking stiff and worse than 10 year older thinkpad, that experience just swayed me away from ever getting a new thinkpad, they are a shade of their former glory and my best advice if you want an all around good laptop for both productivity and gaming just get a good clean gaming laptop, thankfully more and more manufacturers are stopping with the "le gamer aesthetic" designs

I use an X60 for my usual online shitposting chicanery, but it's pretty sluggish for everything else. Shit lags when I open up the site my college uses for assignments. My X230 is a lot better in that regard. I guess something like an X270/X280 would work best for everything I have to throw at it. So yeah, I guess you should just stick to a T480. There's no point in getting an older model unless you want to mod it. You can still change the boot splash and mod the BIOS on post-xx30 models (T440p included), just that you can't install an alternative BIOS, and you can't lobotimize the miniature fed living in your CPU.

I'm looking at a t14 Gen 3 in my local area at the moment. On the seller's listing, he didn't know what the specific CPU is, and he labeled the GPU as having 8gb ram (kek) but I'm waiting to hear back from him on the details. It is an Intel model, so if it's the worst i5, it'd be a 1235u.
To my understanding, I should be able to upgrade the ram (one free slot, right?) and the m.2 SSD that's in there.
Is there any issue with pairing mismatched-sized ram sticks? Presumably, this t14 would have 1 stick of either 8gb or 16gb installed, and I'd be pairing it was a 32gb kit. Any issues with that, or anything else I've mentioned?
Use case is on-the-go video editing. My home PC has an AMD CPU and Nvidia GPU, so I wanted to go all intel for a laptop.

Lads, my t440p is acting up again. I posted here about it getting HOT as fuck for years and then out of nowhere getting this huge fan noise and the scalding keyboard was gone. It was like that for a couple months, now its silent again, hot as shit but silent, which i prefer. Does this mean its absolutely running no fan at all? Shouldnt the CPU be burnt to a crisp alreasy? How can this even be happening
>>
>>100101433
The CPU is smart. It will just run at a lower capacity while staying below damaging temperature levels.

Is tre any T series ThinkPad, that has a 6P core i&, upgradeable ram, 2nd m.2 slot, 120hz screen, and some kind of SD card slot? Seems impossible to find....
There's an Ideapad Pro 5 that has most of these, but the ram isn't upgradeable and it's not a ThinkPad.

My new work laptop is a T14 G3. The screen is very nice, and the performance is good, but the battery life is horrendously bad, like what the fuck were they thinking? It also runs very hot, I can feel is.
Before this, I had a T470, and I literally NEVER had a problem with the battery life, I never thought about it. Now, I get annoyed by the battery running out all the time.
I absolutely recommend against getting this computer or anything from Lenovo in 2k24.

half the reason of poor battery life is them putting smaller batteries in new machines because muh thin and light
the other half is whatever shit you have running on the laptop
>>
>>100107285
I heard the nu Intel laptop CPUs were simply this shit.
It it true that the battery is smaller, the previous laptop had an extra built-in battery, which was great. But I also have my personal laptop (dell), which doesn't have an extra battery, and its battery life is excellent, it just has an older intel cpu.
>whatever shit you have running on the laptop
Nothing extra, I mainly use it for cooding and connecting to servers, but since they updooted it to Windows 11, I kinda want to kill myself

when you first turn on your device do you get a warning message about the fan not working? i have an hp pavillion x360 from 2016 and recently the fan was blowing 24/7. I'd get a bios warning screen everytime I'd turn it on telling me the fan was busted. took my pc to a local computer repair place and they fixed it now its working perfect. the fan cost $30 and they charged me $100 for labor (they had to remove motherboard & everything to get to the fan as well as desolder the fan from the motherboard and solder the new fan to the motherboard) it was expensive but imagine being in a college class and being the only person whos laptop sounded like an airplane about to take off (the entire class looking at me). it would also take forever to turn on and cuz i had an old hdd but now it turns on within seconds.

>>
>>100110050
>I want to get T480 but i dont like the screen
You only need to replace the screen with the IGZO panel. I got a T480 with a strange config (i7-8550U, MX150, garbage TN 768p panel) for $330 in my country and I got an Innolux N140HCG-GQ2 panel for just $53 including shipping at my local e-tailer. Swapping is very easy, all you need is a screwdriver and a guitar pick and some double-sided tape (you don[t need brackets either).

Do not buy T490, T480s or X1 or anything else. All you need is to get a cheap i5-8250U model, put two 16GB 2x8R used RAM sticks to get better performance, and get a non-OEM 72Wh battery for $40 off AliExpress. Then get the 2-heatpipe cooler for the T480 to make it run faster in all-core workloads.

Pic related is my T480's result test in Speedometer 2.1 on Windows 11

I hate lugging around my 230W brick
what is the current meta on using something like picrel to charge your thinkpad?
I know it will work up to 100W which is enough for smaller machines
what is the solution for machines that need 135W or up to 230W like the P series?
the USB C standard gives only 100W at 20V, 240W is at 48 V
Framework has a 180W that was benchmarked to work up tp 200W, but it defeats the purpose if another brick is needed as a step down converter from 48-36V to 20V

Is a T1 Gen 1 with Xeon E-2176M and P2000 a good buy for $250? Seems like a steal but I have concerns about it in my use case.
I like to use Linux (preferably mint since that's what I've liked best so far), and I hear these machines can be finicky with cpu throttling, sleep/hibernate, and dual graphics issues on Linux. the t14 on the other hand is newer so a second hand one will have less mileage, its easier to acquire original parts for, it is more efficient and has better speakers.

I know. This one sort of was given to me a few months ago. My x220 has issues with the ports so I been using the 230
>>
well guys I do like the smug, lighthearted, carefree feeling of running linux on my T420s despite the overheating and 1 hour battery life and dogshit 1440x900 TN panel and herpes trackpad

so I am thinking about getting an X1Carbon used, maybe like 8th gen or something
my question for you is, what's the deal with the screens? I would like one of the 2880x1800 ones with nice colors (ideally OLED unless those are $2,000)

does the high resolution nuke your battery life? are they bright enough? what exact model am I looking for?

I'm going to take some online college courses and they want me to use some spyware anti-cheat slop (Respondus and Examity) that there's no way I'm running on my main machine. I'm thinking of getting a cheap thinkpad to use just for that purpose, so they're not scanning all my files and fucking up my registry. I haven't tested either program myself, but I'd imagine the absolute highest demand in terms of performance would be about the same level as playing a YouTube video on Chrome while also on a 1-on-1 video call.
I see some cheap listings for used T460s on eBay. Would they be up to the task?
>>
>>100137379
Anything 6-8th Gen Intel-U (low-power).
- 6th Gen was hybrid VP9 decoding (no YT support)
- 7th Gen gained VP9 encoding support (which makes YT smoother). Basically as fast as the 6th Gen.
- 8th Gen transitioned to quad-core
- T460(s), T470(s), T480(s), T490(s)
Anything 4-7th Gen Intel-MQ/HQ (quad-core).
- They use quite a bit of power
- T460p, T470p, W540, W541

If you want a cheap clunker then E or L series will do fine.

Wouldn't bother with any other slop since it's only a little bit cheaper but also much worse.

I have the upgrade bug but my X230 just keeps doing (most) everything I need it to do. The chassis is cracked, the Ethernet jack is toast, the keyboard is missing keys, and the fan is starting to rattle, but I can't bring myself to let her go.
>>
I think I'm going to go with a T14, but I can't decide on which gen to get.
If I just want to
>run a lot of videos
>run spreadsheets
>do maybe light programming like typescript and some Java
>maybe game a little with shit like Terraria or something
>shitpost and stream
Should I got for gen 2 or gen 3? Or would a gen 1 T14 suffice?
>>
>>100138944
The extra vertical space on the gen3 would be really nice for spreadsheet and coding work. When I upgrade it will be when the 16:10 models get cheap enough.

You lose some on the keyboard depth, though, vs a gen2. I have a gen2 for work and the keyboard is perfectly serviceable and snappy enough to appreciate but not as good as my X230, which is not as good as my T60. I don't know if the gen3 is actually significantly worse or it's just power bottom autist reviewers that pretend they can feel 3 tenths of a millimeter difference. If the actuation force is as much or more it's probably ok.

Full disclosure: in non-mobile serious work mode (docked) I bottom out keys on a Model M so take my gorilla opinion with a grain of salt.
>>
>>100139226
Thanks for the break down. Sounds like I can make do with a gen2 for now. Maybe I'll consider an upgrade when my wallet is a little richer

Have been thinking of buying the new thinkpad x1 2 in 1 gen 9. as usual these things have a hugely overinflated base price but I can get education discount so that's not so bad.

bigger issue is that for some reason lenovo only puts the better intel H CPUs in the carbons, the 2 in 1 line is stuck with the U CPUs. is it likely they'll ship a stronger version in the future (or, better, an AMD version)?

On my Thinkpad T420, Sometimes when power switch from battery to AC, the system freeze and if there's audio playing it would replay the last second of audio, while the caps lock LED start blinking.
Rebooting solve the issue.
It's infrequent so I can't check what cause it.
Is the mobo dying? Ram issue?
How do I check the kernel panic logs?

hmm i could sell my m4400 w/dock for a bit of cash, but I'll likely get screwed between shitty ebay buyers, fees, and shipping, so might as well just recycle it. might keep the power adapter though since somehow dell still uses the same plug.

Guess you're not supposed to carry laptops around anymore? Or you're expected to just shut them down every time you're going anywhere and boot them back up when you arrive?
Apparently having """"sleep"""" battery life be almost the same as awake idle battery life is normal now. It's what consumers want, and it's what's being sold.

And not ONE review complained about this when I was researching which laptop to get. NOWHERE was there any warning that "oh by the way, it also doesn't support proper sleep, like most modern laptops".

What the fuck.

Mine boots pretty fast but I don't see the point of unlocking my hard drive encryption, logging in, and reopening all my programs every single time.
I could script a "session" that automatically opens all the programs I usually use but even that would just extend the effective boot times.

But that's the thing, I treat my laptop as a laptop, it's neither a desktop nor a tablet.

Can't believe I have to explain this, but It's called buying used nigga. Therein lies the best value. Most things bought new are rooking, like how cars rolling out of a dealership lose most their value immediately. The stock i5 in the X230 is undeniably slow. The quad core processor you mentioned is not stock and has to be bought from China soldered to a motherboard. I bought a T480 for about $100 and it's basically as fast as that quad-core Ivy Bridge while consuming (and creating) much less heat (J). Plus, it has codec capabilities and other cache improvements.

You have brand-identity autism.

Everybody seems to be waiting for the T14 gen5 with bated breath. Unsoldered RAM you can swap daily until your heart's content (soldered wifi chip tho, lol). Batteries are an odd one, I don't know what kind of interchangeability they have between different models (probably none and they're all one-offs) but suffice to say the days of hotswap externals are long behind us and seem unlikely to return.

I just learned that there are mods to install a 2K screen on the T/W520 and 530. Has anyone done them? My T520 has a FHD screen, viewing angles were always a weak point in my opinion, because the screens weren't actual IPS.
